A Walk In The Park

Contributor Post by Mary of Stock Lane Studio

Parks are the fabric of small towns, big cities and everything in between.  They get us out, keep us active, bring us together and remind us that we’re part of something greater than our remote controls.  Parks come in all shapes, themes and sizes.  The smallest park in the world is only as big as the width of a telephone pole!  Do you know where that is?  Many of us have cherished memories of first bike rides, birthday parties and baseball games, barbecues, picnics, festivals, hikes and long walks with pets and loved ones.

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA says:

Our dog loves to go for walks, and play in the park! If there’s a squirrel, he’ll chase it! If there’s another dog, they’ll play! Throw a ball or a stick? He brings it right back, or not! A walk in the park is the highlight of his day.

When we created this quilt pattern, we got to thinking- What other activities would dogs enjoy at the park, if they had a choice? What if a dog could learn how to roller skate, or take a ride on his bicycle? This whimsical design is the end product of our creative thinking!

Puppy Dog Park Appliqué

Our local park is very close to our home. It’s not unusual to hear crowds of people cheering on the local school sports teams as they play their games or see children play on the various pieces of equipment that were placed there in the park for their enjoyment.

However, parks aren’t just about the children! Our dogs love the park too! It’s their chance to “socialize” and get the latest doggy news! In honor of all the other dogs who love to walk in the park, I’d like to show off my dog sewing pillow panel. Our dogs each have their own pillow they rest on after a long walk in the park!

Nautico Creations from Nauticaocreations  says:

Nothing is better than a walk in the park. It helps ground me after time behind a computer, driving in traffic, etc. The calm of wooded areas and listening to the chirping of the birds is especially nice.

This arrangement with the twig vase reminds me of the woodlands and some flowers that might be growing there. unlike a formal arrangement, this one seems just a bit wild and natural to me.

Purple flowers in Twig Vase

Mairi from mairidesign says:

A walk in the park brings to mind the wild meadow flowers that spring up wherever they like. The resilient poppy is one such flower that loves to display its gorgeous reds in our local park.  These stained glass poppies will cheer up even the dullest of days as they capture the light to share their ruby hues with you.

Przemila K from CanisArtStudio says:

The best memories of my childhood are related to the park. In the park, I started to ride my first bike and the park was a favorite meeting place with my friends. These were wonderful moments spent walking with the dog and friends “of the dog”. This is where my dreams about setters started and today I know that dreams come true. For all lovers of long walks, I have a hand-painted clock with one of my favorite dog breeds – Irish setter. Of course, it’s possible to order a similar clock with your favorite motif.

Wall Clock with Painted Dog

Cristal Hughes from DesignsbyCristal says:

Since I’ve chosen to make walking in the park a daily part of my life for heart health I love seeing the flowers in particular daisies blooming and the birds chirping away.

With the weather in GA being so warm this enjoyment has come even earlier this year but the one thing my memory doesn’t like to recall is the pollen that comes with the blooming flowers. However, this hasn’t stopped me in fact it motivates to me get out more to explore different parks just to see the beautiful flowers and the sound of all God’s creation.

And oh, by the way, the Smallest Park in the World?   That’s Mill Ends Park in Portland, Oregon, USA.  Concerned Portlanders decided to spruce up a lonely old telephone pole hole in the 1970’s and it’s been a fun city feature ever since.

Marjorie Scenna from mscenna says:

When I think of walking in a park I immediately think of birds and flowers and shades of green for grass and trees. This repurposed trinket dish combines a green bird and vintage floral tea cup in shades of pink, both reminiscent of things and colors you might see while walking in a park.

Rita Szollosi  from RitzySelection says:

In the most beautiful parks there is always a fishpond! In this small fishpond, an orphaned fish floats. But do not be sorry little fish, soon the other fish will come!

Arlene from ThisandThatCrafter says:

I love to walk in the park when Spring is blooming. Beautiful flowers and bright colors all over. Here is my newest tag set that reminds me of Spring flowers in the park that are so special to see when you take a walk.

Let’s Have A Tea Party

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

As a kid and even an adult it is so much fun to have a tea party with friends and others. There are many types of foods, desserts and more that go into a tea party.

I love having the finger sandwiches, scones, different types of teas and using such beautiful tea services at the tea parties I have gone to.

What do you have in your shop that can be used in a tea party?

Marta from ArtByMartaGotliba says decorate your living room with a nice, food theme art piece, it will help you to set up the right atmosphere for your indoor tea party.

Mrs A from 2aEmporium states  this vintage Noritake creamer and sugar bowl with lid was only manufactured during the years of 1979-1986. It would make a wonderful addition or replacement piece to your Fine China collection.

Caroline from SoyCandlesbyCaroline says while your guests are already calm and comfy from the tea and fixings, a candle with Lemon Essential Oil may be the perfect addition to your tea party. Lemon Essential Oil has been shown to help promote positivity.

Pam from PearlsVintagebyPam states tea parties are great fun. When I went to Ireland we had lots of tea and scones. I am sharing One of my favorites from my personal Tea pot collection!!

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says nothing sets the tone of a tea party better than having a nice table setting. Linens can make it even more special. My mom has made so many great table runners that I’ve used throughout the seasons. It makes the place settings even nicer. Here’s one that combines turquoise and brown with a rich floral and paisley pattern.

Roses Workshop from RosesWorkshop said if you’re going to have a tea party, then you need to keep the tea warm while you chat! A stylish Harris tweed tea cosy is just the thing. The lovely fabric is hand-woven in the Outer Hebrides islands, and any item made from it is a little bit special.

Mairi from mairidesign states I’d say we all need butterflies at our tea parties. Pop a colorful butterfly into an empty iced-tea bottle with a few wild flowers from the park, lay down the gingham picnic blanket, and nibble on your Scotch eggs, cucumber sandwich triangles and sip some chilled iced-tea from a china cup.

Amanda from KNITANDPROMISECRAFTS says my strawberry tea cosy is perfect for any tea-party. It is my best seller and is popular across the globe including Europe, America, Hong Kong and Australia. It was originally created for a 50th birthday tea party and was the highlight of the day!

Marta from GottliebTextiles said your kitchen also deserves to be decorated for the tea party. These dish cloths have lovely pastel color tea party themed embroideries. Not only a perfect kitchen decor but also will become handy when washing dishes after the party.

Primrose Yellow – Pantone Fashion Color For Spring 2017

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

Color trends are a wonderful way to celebrate the seasons!

According to Pantone one of the top colors for Spring 2017 is Primrose Yellow.

PANTONE 13-0755 Primrose Yellow

Primrose Yellow sparkles with heat and vitality. Inviting us into its instant warmth, this joyful yellow shade takes us to a destination marked by enthusiasm, good cheer and sunny days.

Members of the EtsyChristmasInJuly Team have been inspired by the color Primrose Yellow! They have created items in their shops reflecting this inspiration! Here are a few!
Positively primrose. An uplifting quote to help anyone make it through the day. My mother used to say this to me and I think it’s a great motto to live by. Passing on a little kindness, a little laughter can do wonders.

Sherri from ButterflyFeetDigital says:

Yellow is a bit of a contrary color when you create digital art. If it’s too dark it can look like tangerine or butterscotch, if it’s too light it can not show up well against white. But I wanted to include it as a summery set – so I think the yellow and lime citrus conjures up images of lemonade in the summer shade. Fun paper pack to make!

CKay from DaffodilLaneStudio says:

Primrose yellow! I love this color because it is the color of springtime and daffodils! This flower and it’s vibrant color were the inspiration for my own shop name! My first memory of loving this color was as a small child in my Grandmother’s kitchen…pale yellow walls, Gma making caramel icing for a birthday cake and beautiful primrose yellow daffodils overflowing a milk glass vase on the kitchen table! Such a happy color!

Best Friends Forever

Best Friends Forever

To some people it’s their sister or brother, or a life long friend from Kindergarten up to adulthood, some their pets, cat, dogs even birds – other people romantically lost in their own love affair with a significant other and built-in “best friend.”

But there’s more to best friends – those in the military bound forever by loyalty and trust, a nurse and their patient with an eternal bond of the heart or even two orphaned dogs adopted at the same time, remaining besties? What’s your Best Friends Forever story? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Do any items in your shop relate to the theme, Best Friends Forever? We’d love to see your item and the reason why you think it’s unique to friendship.

Linda from LazyYVintage says

Penny and I have been friends since the 5th grade. Over the years and states apart we still talk, text, and snap almost daily. With 50 years of friendship together, she is family to me. She knows me inside out and I know her that way too. She is quirky, fun, and a master fiber artist. Contrast with my serious side, she can make me laugh at myself and remember reality.

This set of Cotillion is from Penny’s grandmother. Her grandparents worked in a factory in Chicago IL. Her grandmother working a full-time job in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. She bought this set and kept in a china cabinet. Most likely never really used. When she passed, it went to Penny’s Mom Marie. Marie kept them tucked away in boxes, never used them. Two years ago, when Marie passed away, Penny gave them to me. The items listed are a few “extra” because most of the set I use everyday. I just felt it was time that they were used, admired, and loved everyday.

When Penny is in town, we sit at the kitchen table; me with my tea and Penny with her coffee using Marie’s dishes. It makes us both happy.

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery says

Love your story, Linda!

My BFF story is about my husband and me! I certainly never thought when I asked him out, in January 1984(!), that we would become lifetime partners. As anyone who is in a really long-term relationship can tell you – it’s a lot of work! However, it is worth it because the value of having someone in your life who can share long ago memories, get your jokes, be your rock in difficult times, or just someone you can be completely yourself with, is undefinable. I feel really fortunate to be in my relationship – I must have known something all those years ago!

Since I have lived in several states I have best friends in different regions of the United States. Once I started making floral arrangements, I would bring one with me to give to each of them as a reminder that I’m thinking of them. No matter how far apart we are or how long it’s been, we can pick up where we left off. That’s a good sign of best friends.

JoAnn’s and my daughter met in 5th grade, and while the girls never became close friends, we moms did! We have lived through middle school angst for our daughters and their struggles in high school. We were there for each other during times of divorce and loss of parents. We have gardened together, had a monthly breakfast in one of our favorite cafes, and we visited every nursery and yarn store in the area. We often sat together and knitted while chatting. we are trusting each other which is the biggest gift. A few months ago she moved to a different state to care for her dying dad. I miss her terribly. We text almost every day, but sometimes it is the right thing to send a handwritten card with some heartfelt words when texting and email is just not the appropriate way of communication.

I love all your stories! Very heartwarming and wonderful. Thank you all for your submissions, your words and your listings.

My best friend is also my husband, Jerry. We have grown old together and now run our Etsy shop as one, designing and making items side by side. He once said to me that he would be my forever love no matter how old we are, through thick and thin and he has kept his word. It’s a blessing to have him in my world as my forever friend.

Almost all his creations have hearts in the design and yes, he does that for me.

Bird Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

This day is mostly about the plight of captive birds, but also about celebrating birds. This day is on 1/5.

There are so many birds in this world and so much to know about them. Here at CIJ we want to know what you have in your shop related to birds.

Leila Valois from ValoisFelts says I love birds, and they’re great fun to felt. Some of my favourites are curlews, pigeons and robins.

There’s not many come into my garden but I love all the ones that do and always have seeds and water available so they feel welcome.

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz said birds are so cute, I love to watch them and birds singing is the best sound in the morning. I planted my garden in such a way that it provides food, water and shelter for them, and I’m so happy that there is quite a variety of birds hanging out there.

Sue from SuesAkornShop states I love the spring time and when the birds are everywhere. I enjoy hearing the ships they make as they talk to and with each other. There are so many different kinds flying about and eating from the feeder and I love watching each and every one of them. I love owls, cardinals and robins are everywhere.

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA discusses that I love to hear the cardinals in my back yard as they “talk” with each other about building their nest, raising their babies, and finding food to eat! Cardinals live in our area year-round, and enjoy feasting on berries from our flowering shrubs or the insects that they catch. The male cardinal has brilliant red feathers, but his mate is better equipped to blend into the foliage where they raise their young.

Linda from LazyYVintage says is it spring yet? Robins are always one of my favorites as they mean the winter is leaving and spring has began. I participate in the winter bird count, where with the Audubon Society you take a day to track the birds in your yard or local nature areas. We feed the birds and document the ones we see on that day. Unfortunately, Robins are not on our list as they migrate and will only be back in the spring.

Heather from ArabellaBlossoms states when I am in the garden or enjoying a walk in the neighbourhood I enjoy the sight and sound of the birds. We have had some hot days in Melbourne, Australia recently. In fact so hot (mid-30’s in ºCelcius) that we missed the sounds of the birds some days. They must have temporarily found a cooler and shadier place to hide from the sun and heat.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage discussed that I am a bird lover! We have lots of feeders around the yard and enjoy the songs and activity of many feathered friends. Winters can be brutal in Michigan, so we have a de-icer in the birdbath. On especially cold winter days—Bluebirds come to enjoy the warm water!

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery says I am a bird lover, bird watcher, and bird feeder! In my previous career I work in animal welfare, so I am well aware of the sad state of affairs for captive birds. This includes birds in the pet industry and birds in the food industry.

I made this brooch (and her companions) to bring attention to the lives of battery hens who are used and abused in the egg industry. It may seem counter intuitive to make a beautiful piece of jewelry about a subject like this. However, it is different and eye-catching; and I’ve always found that people are more willing to listen about an issue if you approach the subject nicely. You can definitely speak out for the birds with my Hen brooch!

Heather Youngblood from youngbloodMADE said I did a series of illustrations in October of girls wearing various types of masks. This is my “bird girl” – because who wouldn’t love to be a bird for a day?

Arlene from ThisandThatCrafter discussed that we love hearing the birds in our yard. We don’t have bird feeders in the trees because we have cats but we are having a feeder built on a pole that we will place away from the trees so our cats can not get them.

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says we are bird lovers and are fortunate to have swallows come back to our yard and nest every summer. They make multiple nests underneath our deck and we get to see their babies. It’s a nice close up of nature.

This quilt is a celebration of all animals and includes special rows of birds, butterflies and ladybugs, along with different birds in trees surrounded by the animal kingdom.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese discussed that I love going on bushwalks. Today I went on a walk around a lake and I loved to hear the birds singing.

These are some paper birds I have made that can be used for craft, card making, buntings…

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt states that I love birds … and we have a couple of owl plaques in our shop!

I live in an area that’s rich with birds … and many species migrate through our area …

In fact, every year St. Bernard Parish hosts an annual bird festival in the spring … Artists & artisans, such as ourselves, show their finished works as well as demonstrating their various techniques …

At the bird festival, the LA Audubon Society capture, tag & release birds to gather info on their migration patterns … this is my favorite part of the festival because I get to help release the birds and watch them fly off!

Bislet from MerryXmasfromSweden wishes everyone a Happy Bird Day!

My favorite bird is the bullfinch. I even have a bullfinch picture on my mailbox! Bullfinches are extremely shy birds so it can take years until I see them in the garden. On very harsh winter days I might find them at my garden feeders.

Then I am happy for many days!

Did you know that the bullfinch has a special food sac? They have developed special food sacs which are positioned in the floor of the mouth, allowing the parents to bring back food to their chicks.

They are the only species of finch to have such sacs. Amazing birds!

Enjoy my Christmas table cloth showing bullfinches eating rowan berries so that you can admire them!

Holly Becker’s Top 4 Design Trends To Watch

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

I am fascinated by trends. Are you? There are weather trends, work place trends, business trends, job trends, food trends, real estate trends, hair trends, fashion trends color trends and so on.

The definition of a trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. In college I took several classes on trends. I remember distinctly studying pre peak – peak – post peak timelines. I find trends intriguing. They pique my curiosity.

Trends unite us. Give us a common ground. A connecting point.

This article is inspired by the Trend Watch With Holly Becker of decor8  article on the Etsy blog.

Shelly from ShellysSelectSalvage says:

Great Blog! I can see why she has published a book.

I love enamelware and ceramics. I agree that ceramics are in and I personally like the handmade look and when it isn’t perfect.

I think this is a pretty, elegant ceramic vase that was made in Japan. It has a matte look and feel with muted flowers. The curves are so feminine.

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says:

The twig vase in this arrangement utilizes one of the trends mentioned by Holly Becker, which is using natural and raw surfaces. This natural twig vase complements the earthy greenery and offers a nice backdrop to the soft lavenders of the lilacs and pansies.

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio says:

Well, I’ll have to say I really enjoy reading Holly Becker’s positive blog. I don’t have much in the category of ceramics or enamelware, but if good health and positive mind are a trend, I’m hitching a ride! The way we think, approach life and help others can certainly lead to a stronger and better body!

Here’s a little positive inspiration for any girls or women out there who have been told – NO, you can’t do that – in more ways than one. Available in print or printable.

Workspace Meditation Ideas

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Here at Christmas in July we want to know all about your meditation ideas for your workspace. Please explain a little about what this means to you.

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says if you work in an office like I do full-time, the atmosphere lacks any natural elements. In order to meditate, I find it’s nice to connect back with nature and have some natural elements in my workspace. If you work in an area that lacks natural light, sometimes even faux plants and flowers cheer up the place. The arrangement I’m listing below not only mimics nature with succulents and flowers, it adds color and texture to a space. Creativity sometimes takes place when you allow your mind to wander a bit to a different place. This arrangement leads you down that path.

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio said in my workspace, I surround myself with my art and inspiring thoughts. I have lots of photographs, paintings and prints on the walls. I also situate my desk close to a window for natural light and for nature breaks. Much of my art is inspired by what is outside my window. I love watching the passage on the seasons and incorporate it into my work. Just a simple sunset can inspire a new project like the one below.

Small Wonders – Tiny Items

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

There is a growing trend of fairy gardens and also doll houses seem to be making a comeback. Because of this small items or miniatures are in popular demand!

Here at Christmas in July we want to know what items do you have that reflect the theme?

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit states even the Tooth Fairy needs a little help from time to time. One of the first items we ever listed on Etsy was our Personalized Tooth Fairy boxes and they are still one of our favorite products.

We have three toothbox designs and have a wide selection of fonts to choose from to make each toothbox a personalized keepsake. We also include a velvet gift pouch which is great for looping over a stuffed animals arm. We feel a special sort of spiritual fulfillment in making our toothboxes to order and being a part of childhood memories around the world!

toysfrom70s from toysfrom70s said this couple of kissing mice resin figurines came from Booger Hollow, AR. Yes I said it correctly the place was a tourist attraction in Pope County, Arkansas, middle of nowhere turn left back in the 1970s. My dad and I stopped there at the bait shop on our way fishing one time. The mice are an inch tall, resin and painted would make a great addition to a shadow box or miniature scene or even on a cake!

One of those little roadside stops off the beaten path on the road. If you collect unusual and cute items this would make a great addition.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage discussed that this is a vintage Hagen-Renaker penguin.

We think he’d be perfect in a winter themed fairy garden or posed next to an igloo made of sugar cubes!

Lots of decorating possibilities!

Catherine Caramanica from BlkBttrflyDsgns says during the 90s I worked for a Marketing Firm. Naturally they had dozens and dozens of clients and I always benefited from the SWAG. I worked for the VP of the Company. This is one of the many Model Cars I acquired among others. Miniature cars were the tip of the iceberg.

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations said I love this plant arrangement because it features different textures and sizes of plants and flowers. The main thing that I love, though is the miniature little mushroom. It makes it very cheery and one can just imagine a little fairy hiding behind the plants.

Sharing Santa Traditions

Contributor post by Alexandra from EyeLoveKnots

Santa Claus… Saint Nicholas… Sinter Klaas… Pere Noel… Father Christmas… Because Santa is viewed so differently in different countries and cultures, I turned to my Christmas in July Team Members to learn more about their Santa and Holiday Traditions.

Personally, I make a point every year to visit with Santa and get my picture taken. When I think of Christmas, that is definitely one of the things I get really excited about! And though I have a grown up Christmas list, I always ask for the same thing – Peace and Happiness. I chose to feature the Santa suit in my Santa Bauble Ornaments (shown above) because it was the first thing that came to mind when I thought of my visit with him. How soft the red velvety suit is, with the fun, fluffy white trim. I had a lot of fun working up these bauble ornaments for gifting and have since made a few for my own tree.

Let’s see what other Christmas in July Members are sharing with us about their Santa and Holiday Traditions!

Megha of byTheArtBug shared this Felt Santa Figurine and Tree Sculpture. She says, “I remember how we used to wait for Santa during Christmas. In our home town Santa used to come with the Carolers and bring gifts and chocolates for kids! Everyone loves Santa and so I made this cute felt Santa to add a special touch to anyone’s Holiday Decor!”

Ina of InaSudjana shared these Set of 5 White Christmas Wool Finger Puppets. She says, “Here’s my Santa in finger puppet form. I came up with this idea last year, and am loving the snowy chill feeling as it is a very hot Christmas here in Australia.”

Patricia of TheOldBarnDoor shared this Jolly Victorian Santa Claus Christmas Pillow. She says, “This image never fails to make me smile – it is taken from one of my antique postcards. It conjures up all those feelings of anticipation I had as a young child.”

NauticoCreations shared these Hand Painted Santa Ornaments. They say, “One of our traditions is to give homemade gifts. These Santa cinnamon sticks are something that can be made and treasured for years to come. If you don’t like making things or don’t have time, these can be purchased to give you the handmade feel in YOUR home.”

Nan of ShabbyShopGirls shared this Vintage Corn Husk Santa Claus. She says, “This unusual Christmas Santa is made from actual corn husks by Nan Anderson. One of many collectible Santa’s from her Christmas santa series of corn husk dolls. We like this one in particular, as he resembles different Santa’s from Germany and Europe with his Christmas tree and bag full of toys. A lovely addition to any collection of primitive Santa’s!”

Do you have a special holiday item that represents your Santa or Holiday Tradition? Maybe you make a special type of Christmas Cookie for Santa, or leave out a treat for the Reindeer. I would love to hear about it! Share your story below.
