Minimalist Style

“Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.”

I define minimalist as a style that uses pared-down design elements. The artist strips everything down to its essential quality, to achieve simplicity.

We asked our CIJ Friends what they love and/or offer in the minimalist style; here’s what they sent in.

Finding a heart beach glass piece is rare.

So even though this beautiful brown piece is small, about dime sized,I decided to make a pendant from it

With as little wire as possible, I wrapped the piece so that the heart is the highlight.

When I begin to knit this purse it is very simple, just a plain minimal little purse with very little character. As I continue to build upon it with its flower and beading it grows into a sophisticated clutch handbag that is one-of-a-kind. People who have these purses always share their compliments with me that they receive.

Imagine – a red handbag with little pansies – how fun could that be! And yes, it has be made and sold. “Simplicity is the ultimate of the form of sophistication.”

Many of the items in my shop are simple or minimalist, as that is my own favourite style. I have chosen to showcase this Harris tweed tea cosy.

Far from the bright colours and bold tartans of some tweeds, this cosy is made from two almost-plain weaves. A cosy made from just one of them might even look dull. By joining them with a straight horizontal line, together they bring out the best of both pieces.

Boho Style

Contributor post by  Sheila and Shannon of BeadyEyedBird

Gypsy, Boho, Bohemian, Ethnic, Hippie — whatever you choose to call it, it’s FUN! In modern usage, the term “Bohemian” is applied to people who live unconventional, usually artistic, lives. The original “Bohemians” were travelers or refugees from central Europe (hence, the French bohemian, for “gypsy”).

At the beginning of the Bohemian ‘movement’, it was said that gypsy girls themselves “…are sexy and delightful precisely because they do not give a hoot for fashion.”

When the style was first identified, it was the early 20th century. Fast forward to the 60’s and 70’s when major designers started to routinely promote the “peasant look” and sold a range of “uniquely eccentric clothes.” (How many of you still have some of those in the back of your closet, like me??)

Fast forward again to the late 1980’s, when variants of the short and fundamentally un-Bohemian rah-rah skirt (which originated with cheerleaders) were combined with leather or denim to create a look with some Bohemian or even gothic features. New names emerged, like ‘hippie chic’ and ‘boho-chic’. Similar styles were sometimes referred to as “bobo” or “ashcan chic” or “luxe grunge” — with leading proponents including actresses Mary Kate Olsen and Zooey Deschanel.

Whatever it’s called, and whatever the iteration or era, we L.O.V.E. it. What do you have or love that’s Boho? We asked our team members to share their stories and items with us, and here’s what we got —

Karen Hafel from timetalentjewels said:

Some people think that these little bags are Bohemian style bags and I share them with the teenagers as cute chic bags to carry for fun. Cool colorful stripes and colorful flower button makes it a fun bag for any teen! What is fun about this style of bag is it can be made into the school’s colors too, that is pretty chic too!

It was the spots that got my attention. They brought to mind lush jungle foliage, moss on rocks, lizards and that sense of long ago. Add the copper disk, and I started thinking about Amazon warrior-women and the tribal nomad style of the hippie commune days. Obviously, I have a fertile imagination…

To my eye, the Bohemian look is earthy and layered, with flowing colorful fabrics and accessories made from natural materials. Our Tagua nut stacking bracelets are an earthy combination of tagua nut hollow triangle slices, wooden tubes and lightweight colorful resin rounds hand-knotted on silk thread.

While Bohemian fashion may cycle through fashion popularity over the years, true Bohemians don’t care about popularity or style – they care about expressing themselves. So wear what makes you feel good!

The Great Outdoors

Contributor Post by  Sheila and Shannon from BeadyEyedBird

There are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors! We asked our Teamies what they love to do outside, and what their shops offer so others can do the same. Here’s what they told us:

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio said:

Nature is such a great source of inspiration for me. The starry night sky, the greenery of the forest and the salt of the sea all snap my creativity into production. I really love my visits to the sea. My kids can be as loud as they want with the ocean waves crashing around them. They can run and get dirty, bury themselves in the sand and then wash it all off in the water. They remind me that I once did that too and coax me out into the wild. We all feel the forces of nature that are greater than us, wind on our faces and salt on our tongues and powerful waves stinging our skin. There is no better place to make me feel so grateful to be alive. This inspirational quote is a reminder of that. And yes, those are my kids and their cousins, doing what kids do best, making their mark on the sandy beaches of the Oregon Coast.

When my Premie Daughter was born and the hospital told us to take a break for a weekend we stayed on an electric camp site so I could Pump my Milk to keep it going for my return. She is now 30 and in excellent health.

Well we used Sleeping Bags. I am selling a new but vintage Marlboro Sleeping Bag that my sister gave ma as a Gift. She was an Avid Smoker and collected Marlboro gifts.

When I first discovered the joys of vintage buying and selling I was shy about stocking glass items … party because I knew very little about identifying quality, but I also had a deep fear of getting the packaging wrong and ending up with breakages! My learning curve included watching the TV show Bargain Hunters, and that is where I first heard about Orrefors crystal. This paneled art glass bowl was my first personal encounter with the ‘real thing’. Stunned by the both the design and the clarity, I overcame my anxiety and brought it into my shop. I now stock quite a few glass pieces but this one is still my all time favorite.
