I Can See Clearly Now

Contributor Post by Sheila and Shannon of BeadyEyedBird

They say something is ‘Crystal Clear’ when you can see right through it, like good, pure water or clean glass. We asked our Teamies what they love and/or offer that is crystal clear, and here’s what they shared with us.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeSupplies said:

These beads are not only clear, but are also faceted giving them a crystal like quality. This type of gem is so versatile – it can be combined with any colour and will reflect that colour; can be used as a focal among other colours; or can be used on its own!

These beads are ideal for jewellery design, quilting, scrapbooking – name your craft project!

When I first discovered the joys of vintage buying and selling I was shy about stocking glass items … party because I knew very little about identifying quality, but I also had a deep fear of getting the packaging wrong and ending up with breakages! My learning curve included watching the TV show Bargain Hunters, and that is where I first heard about Orrefors crystal. This paneled art glass bowl was my first personal encounter with the ‘real thing’. Stunned by the both the design and the clarity, I overcame my anxiety and brought it into my shop. I now stock quite a few glass pieces but this one is still my all time favorite.

We asked our teamies to share items from their shops that are (or remind them of) neon; check them out below. We hope all you out there in WordPress-Land will respond to tell us about your own fond memories of your first or most memorable sighting/use of NEON!

Sticks And Stones

Winter always reminds us of the beauty, bounty and power of nature — and what better to celebrate that than an exploration of what Etsians do and have in the way of wood and/or stone. Do you make (or buy) planters from driftwood? Jewelry from gemstones? Collect wooden breadboxes or paint pet rocks? Whatever you have and/or love, we hope you’ll comment and tell us about it! Here’s what some of your Etsy team-mates had to say about this subject. In the meantime, happy BRRRRR time of year… (For many of us, anyway…)

Most of my work features vintage materials but I confess to a weakness for some gemstones. Opals and jade are among my favorites. These sweet dangle earrings combine the two.

In addition to the untreated blue Peruvian opals these earrings feature two different variations of light green jade.

The twenty gemstones are hand-knotted onto teal linen thread. Each stone is spaced expressly to mirror the opposite earring.

Light My Fire

Blog contribution by Sheila and Shannon from BeadyEyedBird

It can be such a cozy time of year — and it’s especially cozy if you can curl up in front of a fireplace, wood stove, or even an outdoor bonfire. We wanted to know what our team members had in the way of fond memories of fire and related things. Here’s what they said:
Nancy Duncan from EponasCrystals said:

Homemade Goodness For The Season

My friend gave me this recipe several years ago. These are simple hazelnut butter cookies but they taste so good. We bake them every Christmas since then.

Here is a recipe or if you’d like to see the full version with photographs please visit my blog socksandmittens.blogspot.com/2012/12/christmas-butter-cookies.html

Hazelnut butter cookies:

Ingredients:
1 cup butter at room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
2 tea-spoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped hazelnuts
Powdered sugar for dusting

Cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla, flour and salt. Fold in nuts. Knead a dough to make it smooth. Place the dough ball in refrigerator for 2 hours.

Preheat your oven to 350’F. Line the baking sheet with foil. If your dough is too hard cut it with knife to form a strips and then cut it to even pieces. Roll the pieces into balls about the same size and place on ungreased foil about 1″ apart.

Bake at 350’F for about 15 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom. Let them cool completely and dust them with the powdered sugar.

International Volunteer Day

Contributor Post by Sheila and Shannon from BeadyEyedBird

International Volunteer Day is an international observance designated by the United Nations (since 1985). It is focused on economic and social development and offers an opportunity for volunteer organizations and individual volunteers to make visible their contributions – at local, national and international levels. The day is observed by many non-governmental organizations, including Red Cross, scouts and others.

The main focus of International Volunteer Day (IVD) in 2016 is not only to celebrate volunteerism in all its facets but also to pay special tribute to people’s participation that leads to stronger governance, social cohesion, peace and sustainable development. International volunteer day is a unique opportunity for people and volunteer organizations to work with Government agencies, non-profit institutions, community group, academia and the private sector.

We inquired about our team members’ engagement in volunteer work — because what better time could there be? As we go into the holiday season, we want to acknowledge and highlight the best at the core of our human nature, and work together to make the world a better place. Here’s what our friends had to say:

Diana from joliefemmebydiana said:

I have served as a volunteer for 6 years in my local 4h club. I have helped with service projects of picking fruit and vegetables for donation to a food pantry. I have also helped the 4h clubs in my area to host events and contests for the personal development of each member. It’s fun to help and great to spend time with the kids!

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio said:

We are a family that volunteers year round in many different forms. One interesting (and fun!) way my daughter volunteers is through dance. Her dance company partners with the Norman Rockwell Museum to bring dance, art and history to life in local elementary schools. A museum curator presents scenes from Rockwell’s many illustrations and explains the history behind it, but also life of Norman Rockwell. Many of the children in the audience grew up in the same areas in which the scenes from the illustrations took place, so they can relate. Then, the dancers bring each illustration and the history behind it to life.

For some children, this is the first time they have seen ballet, or any dance, live, so after the performance, dancers hold a question and answer session in which students ask all kids of questions about the life of a dancer, and about Rockwell’s paintings/illustrations. Their interesting questions show that they were really paying attention to the performance and really liked it.
