Nature Gifts

Contributor post by Julie from EveryoneLovesGifts0

Spring is nearly upon us followed by the lovely summer months. I love this time of year with the sun shining on our faces, it makes us all happy. But it is also a time to take notice of nature around us, nature can be of trees, flowers or nature animals themselves.

Here at CIJ we want to know what gifts you have that reflect the theme ‘nature’ and tell us a little about your gift.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns says: This necklace is made from clay, which is from the Earth, and features two pendants in the shape of leaves. The leaves were smoke fired in a bonfire using tree branches, leaves and various other natural materials, such as pine cones.

So this necklace certainly is of and from nature!

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says, For me, the ocean is one of the big forces of nature. I am lucky to live close by the Pacific Ocean and whenever I spend time at the coast I am captivated by its stunning beauty. A walk on the beach shows me all the treasures nature has to offer right here: driftwood, shells, sand dollars, algae, small crabs.

This mixed media painting was inspired by the interestingly shaped piece of driftwood I found at one of our beaches. Everything else evolved around it. I added some shells and a sea star as well. The quote by Kate Chopin was the final touch and fits perfectly.

Bunnies, Chicks And Lambs

Contributor Post by Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

Bunnies, Chicks And Lambs

This speaks to my heart – what a furry, soft, cute, pastels and egg hunts and farms and grandparents kind of topic.. my mother had bunnies galore on our little farm. When I was in kindergarten, our class would walk over to our front yard, the kids would sit in a circle and my mom would let oodles of bunnies go, hopping to happy squealing children.

How does this springtime topic make you feel, what items in your shop relate to this theme – and when is the last time you’ve petted a soft and cuddly baby animal? We’d love to see your accompanying items and hear your stories.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage says

I love your story Opal!

I bet those school children will remember that “bunny encounter” forever!

These are a couple of kitschy chicks that my daughter and I found at an antique shop. We love their sticker eyes and yellow feather details.

I love this!! Thank you Opal for organizing!

I thought I would share my shops whimsical wine cork Easter bunny ornaments too! Spring time always reminds me of my grandma. Each Easter she would lend me one of her old Sunday hats and we would have brunch in our sunny spring dresses and Easter egg hunts down at the farm! Lots of smiles and laughter come to mind as the birdies are out chirping and the tulips come into bloom.

Cheers from Corky Friendz

Spring is my favorite time of year! Bring on the bunnies, ducklings, little lambs and especially, the Easter chicks!! Their serious expressions make me think they have a lot on their little chicken minds! When my kids were small, we had a chick that peeped when you held it. Fun for the kids, not so fun on a 13 hour car ride home from Grandma’s house when you can hear the tiny chick — but you cannot find anywhere! ( And we pulled over several times to look!) PEEP, PEEP, PEEP all the way home!!

I love the little spring lambs, but I really want to see them grow up and become sheep that eventually will supply us with beautiful yarn (I’m a knitter). These two sheep that simply stole my heart by just standing there and looking at me live in the English countryside in the beautiful Cotswolds where I think they have a good life. Wouldn’t this be a lovely spring greeting?

When we had little nieces and nephews we would hold a huge Easter egg hunt out at the farm and hide dozens of plastic eggs. All the siblings would come with their kids and we’d meet at church then afterwards our house and kids would hunt and the entire family would enjoy Easter Ham for lunch.

Here is one of the Easter baskets for sale in our shop. My wife embroidered the chicks for the liner.

I love the pastels and the new going to church clothes for Easter Sunday. I love the sweets and bake some petit fours and small cakes for brunch. But mostly, with everyone all cleaned up (and they clean up nicely) and dressed up, we make quite the picture of spring in Illinois. Of course, that only last long enough to take some pictures as the kids run to find hidden eggs and the adults take off ties and kick off shoes!

I was blessed to grow up on a farm in Iowa with a very crafty and fun loving Mom and Dad! We usually dyed our Easter eggs Saturday night watching and dancing to Lawrence Welk. Then Mom would wind our straight hair onto bristly curlers and we tried to sleep with constant pricking giving us headaches all night! We’d jump up at the crack of dawn to eat breakfast, then we searched for our Easter baskets filled with jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and special surprises. We’d get a jump rope or book or toy we wanted. The little craft/chef/tool aprons I sell were my Mom’s inspiration and they would make a great Easter gift for the littles in your life!

Dream Kitchen

Contributor post by Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

Dream Kitchen

I love this topic! I have many dream kitchen scenarios in my head and in the course of adulthood have had the pleasure of making some of those dreams reality. Right now my kitchen is a dreamy retro cafe with vintage radio and soda bottle collections, restaurant booths and even a Coca-Cola vending machine in the nearly dining room.

To many the words DREAM KITCHEN means with all the bells and whistles – new appliances, granite countertops, plenty of storage space. To others this could mean just the perfect combination of space, themed decor and a breakfast nook to enjoy their mornings. What kind of dream kitchen do you envision or have you seen/visited over the years? We’d love to see your accompanying items and hear your stories.

Pam Maggio from PamsPawsJewelry says

Well, I hate to cook, LOL! My idea of a Dream Kitchen or pretty one is a theme in pretty colors and of course a big enough one to eat in and decorate, LOL! So, for now how about a cheerful blue and white kitchen with an Asian theme and Oriental flare!

On shelves above you can have Asian style artsy items in blue and white, maybe a wall hanging embroidered with the gorgeous Japanese style gardens that I have seen! Doors leading outside to a small Japanese themed herb garden with little stone pagodas and such!

The table which is the center of most kitchens in many cultures can be set with bamboo place mats and a Chinese or Japanese fancy ginger jar or two, along with some bonsai trees and Oriental style flower arrangements! Then, set the table for tea with a pretty Asian teapot like mine I have posted below, matching tea cups, and have a relaxing time with friends having Asian cuisine and tea!

Leila Blakely from LasLovelies says

I almost had a dream kitchen. I loved my re-wired 20’s stove and oven on legs. I was able to feed my cats under there. Ha! Loved it. I even had the old-time refrigerator with the motor up on the top.
I decorated the tops of my cupboards with Hills Brothers Coffee Tins and every nook and cranny with Royal or Schilling Tins along with my red and white Hall Pottery collection. I added the red and white gingham curtains with white ruffles and black ribbon. Perfectly cute. Now I want to have a farmer sink and porcelain drain cupboards. I really don’t care if I have a dishwasher since the only thing that fits in them are plates which are the easiest items to wash. My coffee cups don’t even fit.

As I mentioned before my tastes are changing but I still like the black, white and red accents. This is a fabulous decorator piece. It would look good in a modern, farm-house chic or even a retro kitchen. I’m sure someone would love to decorate with this nostalgic, workable food scale. Whether it’s in a grouping with other items such as fruit, flowers or utensils it will be sure to capture one’s eye. It is beautiful, intricate and in fine vintage condition.

After we made the last college tuition payment for our son, I was fortunate to be able to remodel our dated kitchen! We now have gorgeous cherry cabinets, quartz counters and, my favorite feature, a Grohe “touch less” faucet!
The contractor even honored my wish for a “curio” cabinet at one end of the island! It came out fantastic with wood shelving and glass doors. I enjoy displaying some of our Shop items inside. My daughter and I love finding retro (and kitschy) kitchen items, here is a cute trivet we found in Shipshewanna, Indiana.

Linda from LazyYVintage says

We are now just finishing a kitchen remodel. It is kind of a farmhouse style with white brick walls and hickory cabinets. Just some trimming out and hanging my wall decorations back up and Jim is done.

But I love to cook and bake. So my favorite part of the new kitchen is a yellow painted peg board to hang up my cooking tools. Wire whisks, spatulas, ice cream scoops, tongs, etc. Julia Childs always have a peg board that her husband would put up where ever they lived in the world. I couldn’t wait for that piece to be done in my new yellow, green, and pine cone brown kitchen.

And, these are my new old everyday dishes. It was a big set of a service of 16, so some have made there way into the shop.

Love these cheerful items above! Really my dream kitchen is one that’s inviting and accommodates a lot of people. My kitchen right now is warm and inviting and our family loves it. The one thing that drives me crazy though is that our kitchen sink is right next to the back door, which is the door that everyone uses. So my dirty dishes are the first thing that people see!! When I win the lottery I’m definitely remodeling that!! Still, it seems the kitchen is the happiest place in our home!

My dream kitchen would be centered around drinks and fun. I would have a very nice hot drinks bar where I can make all sorts of versions of coffee and tea. I would have an espresso machine, french press, electric kettle, and of course a way to brew a big pot of coffee. I want a wide selection of teas, from simple black teas to herbal remedies. Although I’m not a big alcohol drinker, I still would love to have a small alcohol bar as well. I want wines for special occasions and a couple of nice bottles of whiskey for my husband to have a glass now and then. My center bar would also have comfortable bar chairs for sitting to play board and card games with guests. The decor would reflect my family’s nerd love, fun and playful. My kitchen is very large, and I’m happy to say that we are well on our way to making this dream happen!

The Secret Gardener

Spring, flowers and planting/garden time.. will be here before we know it! Of all the seasons I think Spring is my favorite, the new flowers and grass – the birds singing in the trees, but planting and gardening can go on year round.

What kind of idea’s – gifts for others or yourself – does this topic bring to mind? It can be indoor gardening as well.

Practical, whimsical, down and dirty (in the dirt planting), or garden design, while wearing your favorite white outfit? I’d love to hear your thoughts and see your items.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage says

Here in Michigan, spring is a welcome season! We have many gardens and a fish pond in our yard to enjoy. I can’t wait for the bulbs to bloom, signaling the end of winter.

A fairy garden in my kitchen window brings a pop of green to our dreary landscape. We have many tiny items in our Shop that are perfectly sized for fairy gardens.

This little bird bath is one of them:

Spring is a noisy time of the year in our garden. The birds are competing for mates, building nests, and raising babies. The bees are buzzing in the flowers, and the frogs are singing their croaking chorus in the evening. We love to sit outdoors in the cool evening, enjoying the sights and sounds of Nature!

Our downloadable quilt block pattern features a little frog who isn’t quite sure whether the bumblebee is tasty or dangerous. This would be a fun decoration for a kitchen towel, mug rug, or spring wall hanging.

I’m knee-deep in seed catalogs and writing in my garden journal. In addition to my vegetable garden, we plant Impatiens, vinca, geraniums, and other annuals in colorful and vintage pots. My perennial gardens are full of wildflowers that run the gamut of color and height. Butterfly gardens full of bergamot, sawtooth sunflower, shooting stars, turk cap lilies, day lilies, Easter lilies, bearded iris, and on and on.

Gardening to me is about feeding us and creating a beautiful peaceful place to relax and reconnect with yourself and your spiritual guide.

My mother was an award-winning rose gardener. The photo below was taken in her garden a year before she passed away. I’ve always wanted to grow the abundant, fragrant and colorful roses she tended in our garden growing up. I have given in to the fact that mine will never be like hers! Not enough time and too many garden animals. I want to devote more time to an edible garden. We have gorgeous wild roses growing in our garden, along with a good amount of other forest greenery that provide food for wild animals. I’m hoping that will be enough to distract them from eating the edible garden for MY table. Even with fences, though, I’m not too confident. With more than a foot of snow on the ground now in February, the deer and rabbits and fox and woodchucks will be hungry this spring.

Unfortunately I have no garden, since l live in a building.

But, as l love gardening anyway, each one of the four balconies of my home is full of plants.

On the kitchen balcony l have aromatic plants, herbs, used for cooking and seasoning: basil, peppermint, parsley, rosemary, and so on.

On the other ones, a wonderful hibiscus and many succulents, as in South Italy there is always enough sun for them, even in winter.

So, to celebrate mine passion and the next spring coming, l created a wreath, completely dedicated to gardening lovers.
Hope you enjoy it!

I really love Spring with its promise of new life both in the plant world and in the animal kingdom!

It is such a joy to see all of the beautiful and colorful flowers growing and the leaves coming back on the trees!

Gardening indoors and out is one of my favorite things to do and I enjoy planting all manner of flowers, veggies, and small ornamental trees!

It refreshes your spirit, is good exercise, and beautifies your surroundings.

Outside of a small apartment out in the country, in Lancaster, MA, I had 3 gardens which were all different color schemes!

My neighbors loved them and my pots of pansies, golden chain and weeping Japanese ornamental trees!

I used to do experiments with growing and pollinating, and even had a corn-stalk in the house!

One garden was all peach and white, another purples and blues, and the third was red, orange, and yellow.

It was so much fun planting unique varieties of roses, tulips, irises, lilies, hyacinths, phlox, Alaskan poppies, and lots more with various natural stone garden decorations!

It is definitely something I look forward to through the long Winters in the Northeast!

Happy Gardening!

When I travel long distance, I take another for needed odds and ends. My daughter uses this blue and yellow case for all the dance trips she takes. It helps her stay organized and she loves the white street art peace dove. Her older sister (a SLS team member) captured the shot of the peace dove graffiti on a visit to the Berlin, Germany. The remnants of the Berlin wall have been painted over with meaningful expressions of peace and politics and is now considered one of the largest outdoor art galleries in the world.

Linda from LazyYVintage discussed that thinking of the coming spring, picnics are on the agenda. I have a basket similar to this one that we use during the spring and summer on family picnics and picnics for two. I love the old baskets. And the memories shared being outside enjoying a homemade picnic lunch.

Sue and Misty from shabbyshopgirls states that train cases are such a useful way to store and organize a variety of items! Use for holding cosmetics, art supplies, sewing items and office supplies! Extremely versatile for storage and can be conveniently tucked away to save space! Make sure you find one with the little cosmetic tray inside to hold and organize all those small items!

Saucy And Sweet

Saucy and Sweet

When I heard this title it immediately made me think of food, my favorite saucy and sweet chicken dish – but on second thought, there are many items in our Etsy shops that could be deemed as Saucy  or Sweet!

I’d love to hear your thoughts, and can’t wait to see your items.

Thank you in advance for your submissions, Opal

Talk about a fun find, eh? A Saucy Feminist!

This Magazine sure sparks some memories for me… living through the sixties and all the crazies … me included! The peace marches and city park demonstrations… the patches sewn over holes in my blue jeans because they were the only ones I owned and wanted to wear until everyone started loving one another again … oh yes did I mention… living on the road and in a tent… visiting Washington DC and handing out chocolate chip cookies to everyone in front of the BIG White House… of boy… the list goes on… I guess I was kind of Saucy Feminist back then too and can relate to this cover girl …

Now I am awaiting my 65th birthday and Social Security so I can have health insurance and with #9 grand baby arriving in less a month and 4 children all way older than I was when I used to be saucy girl …
Well please have fun turning the pages of time in this magazine … I hope you like reading through the fun pages and some sad ones… remembering our brave children/soldiers as they fought, died and sort of survived the Viet Nam War Era.

Oh my! Cher brought memories flooding back into my mind. Those were the days as I currently watch the Trump Inauguration protests going on. It saddens me but I’m thankful I live in a country of freedom of speech.

Also the days have left of us for the freedom of wearing our furs. We are spit on and looked at with disgust. I love wearing mine still as I’m a rebel at heart. They are warm and make me feel elegant and special. I feel ‘Saucy’ and I’m ‘Sweet’ (when I want to be). This is a lovely all season short jacket for a night out or going to lunch.

I like sauce. I cook with a lot of different sauces and love that you can call gravy, sauce. Or sauce, gravy. From barbecue sauce to a lovely hollandaise, saucy dishes are my favorite to prepare. I think that is why I’m always on the look out for gravy boats and sauce bowls. And, when you can find the ladle with it! Well, you just have to pick that up, won’t you?

Flame – Pantone Fashion Color For Spring 2017

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

Color trends are a wonderful way to celebrate the seasons!

According to Pantone one of the top colors for Spring 2017 is Flame.

PANTONE 17-1462 Flame

A red-based orange, Flame, is gregarious and fun-loving. Flamboyant and vivacious, this wonderfully theatrical shade adds fiery heat to the spring 2017 palette.

Members of the EtsyChristmasInJuly Team have been inspired by the color Flame! They have created items in their shops reflecting this inspiration! Here are a few!
Here’s a fun way to keep halls quiet and motivate students during testing season (coming up for lots of High School students right now). It’s printable, so it’s quick and easy and always at your finger tips. Would make a great teacher gift or home school decor.

As orange can be such a warm and fiery color, it always fascinates me how colors come together. When knitting this hot pad with Noro Kureyon yarn the colors just worked up beautifully to create a fun little piece.

When I made these earrings, I was taken by the contrast between the flame orange of the bottom bead and the cool orange of the center one. The faceted bead on top brings back the fire with a bit a sparkle. Just like a real flame, the colors shift & blend into each other.
