What’s In Your Bag

Contributor post by Julie from EveryoneLovesGifts0

I don’t know about you but I love having a nosey in other people’s bags, I don’t know why but I have always found it interesting to see what people carry around with them.
So that being said for a chance to be featured in this blog post we at CIJ would love to see pictures and know what you carry in your bag.

* What do you class as your essential items and why?
* Why do you carry what you do?
* Do you carry anything sentimental in your bag?
* Do you carry something for good luck?
* Do you carry anything that is handmade?

Karen Hafel from timetalentjewels says; The bag itself is handmade and is sentimental because I made it with my own two hands. It is just the right size and best of all no one else has one like it. It is one-of-a-kind. It is felted wool with flower buttons. A fun purse to carry and have people say “where did you get that purse.”

One of a kind bag

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says; I always have a small journal or notebook and a pen in my bag. Whenever I find inspiration I can jot it down and work with that later. It can function as a sketchbook as well. I can write down phone numbers and email addresses, make notes about places I want to photograph etc. A journal never needs recharging and it never “freezes” or shuts down unexpectedly – and it’s smaller than some smart phones.

Stock Lane Studio’s from StockLaneStudio says; Yay its spring and I have officially removed the pair of hand knit gloves from my bag. So happy the weather is warming up. With that in mind, I always carry sunglasses and a bit of sun block in my bag. Snow can be blinding, so those essentials are in my bag even in the winter.
Believe it or not, I still carry real old-fashioned books. I like to read and feel this is giving my eyes a break from electronics.

I also carry a mini bag that can fold up to nothing and I can whip out when needed. Do not need anymore plastic bags!
I keep 2 zippered pouches in my bag, one for electronics and writing essentials and one for toiletries/cosmetics. What’s not in my bag: a comb or brush. Hmm, what does that say about me?

My sentimental items are the photos of my family in my wallet. And the bag itself. I’ve had it for 20 years and its been around the world with me. It’s really well made and I just love it.

Edna from AddaSplashofColour says; I cannot survive without my reading glasses so I always carry it in my glasses case. It is padded to protect the glasses and makes it easy to find.

Cindy Blakesiee from AllThatCraftyJazz says; This is a very large bag. Would be great as a weekender bag or just to carry all the stuff you need to go to the beach!

The Great Outdoors

Contributor Post by  Sheila and Shannon from BeadyEyedBird

There are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors! We asked our Teamies what they love to do outside, and what their shops offer so others can do the same. Here’s what they told us:

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio said:

Nature is such a great source of inspiration for me. The starry night sky, the greenery of the forest and the salt of the sea all snap my creativity into production. I really love my visits to the sea. My kids can be as loud as they want with the ocean waves crashing around them. They can run and get dirty, bury themselves in the sand and then wash it all off in the water. They remind me that I once did that too and coax me out into the wild. We all feel the forces of nature that are greater than us, wind on our faces and salt on our tongues and powerful waves stinging our skin. There is no better place to make me feel so grateful to be alive. This inspirational quote is a reminder of that. And yes, those are my kids and their cousins, doing what kids do best, making their mark on the sandy beaches of the Oregon Coast.

We spent many vacations with our kids and dog at Southwick Beach on Lake Ontario. We stayed in Our Red Coleman Tent. When my Premie Daughter was born and the hospital told us to take a break for a weekend we stayed on an electric camp site so I could Pump my Milk to keep it going for my return. She is now 30 and in excellent health.

Well we used Sleeping Bags. I am selling a new but vintage Marlboro Sleeping Bag that my sister gave ma as a Gift. She was an Avid Smoker and collected Marlboro gifts.

I can see it out my kitchen window and enjoy watching how it changes through the seasons.

We have fish and “resident” frogs that are fun to watch.

The frogs are highly intelligent and are famous for posing in silly positions for my camera!

I love nature, period. Whether it’s working in my garden, watching birds at the lake or hiking in the wilderness — I enjoy it and couldn’t live without it. And then in the evening we sit around the campfire (yes, I do love to camp and sleep in a tent) and write into my journal. This is when inspiration hits and I can write about nature, my thoughts, my feelings and adventures in a beautiful handmade journal.

Bunnies, Chicks And Lambs

Contributor Post by Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

Bunnies, Chicks And Lambs

This speaks to my heart – what a furry, soft, cute, pastels and egg hunts and farms and grandparents kind of topic.. my mother had bunnies galore on our little farm. When I was in kindergarten, our class would walk over to our front yard, the kids would sit in a circle and my mom would let oodles of bunnies go, hopping to happy squealing children.

How does this springtime topic make you feel, what items in your shop relate to this theme – and when is the last time you’ve petted a soft and cuddly baby animal? We’d love to see your accompanying items and hear your stories.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage says

I love your story Opal!

I bet those school children will remember that “bunny encounter” forever!

These are a couple of kitschy chicks that my daughter and I found at an antique shop. We love their sticker eyes and yellow feather details.

I love this!! Thank you Opal for organizing!

I thought I would share my shops whimsical wine cork Easter bunny ornaments too! Spring time always reminds me of my grandma. Each Easter she would lend me one of her old Sunday hats and we would have brunch in our sunny spring dresses and Easter egg hunts down at the farm! Lots of smiles and laughter come to mind as the birdies are out chirping and the tulips come into bloom.

Cheers from Corky Friendz

Spring is my favorite time of year! Bring on the bunnies, ducklings, little lambs and especially, the Easter chicks!! Their serious expressions make me think they have a lot on their little chicken minds! When my kids were small, we had a chick that peeped when you held it. Fun for the kids, not so fun on a 13 hour car ride home from Grandma’s house when you can hear the tiny chick — but you cannot find anywhere! ( And we pulled over several times to look!) PEEP, PEEP, PEEP all the way home!!

I love the pastels and the new going to church clothes for Easter Sunday. I love the sweets and bake some petit fours and small cakes for brunch. But mostly, with everyone all cleaned up (and they clean up nicely) and dressed up, we make quite the picture of spring in Illinois. Of course, that only last long enough to take some pictures as the kids run to find hidden eggs and the adults take off ties and kick off shoes!

I was blessed to grow up on a farm in Iowa with a very crafty and fun loving Mom and Dad! We usually dyed our Easter eggs Saturday night watching and dancing to Lawrence Welk. Then Mom would wind our straight hair onto bristly curlers and we tried to sleep with constant pricking giving us headaches all night! We’d jump up at the crack of dawn to eat breakfast, then we searched for our Easter baskets filled with jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and special surprises. We’d get a jump rope or book or toy we wanted. The little craft/chef/tool aprons I sell were my Mom’s inspiration and they would make a great Easter gift for the littles in your life!

Best Friends Forever

Best Friends Forever

To some people it’s their sister or brother, or a life long friend from Kindergarten up to adulthood, some their pets, cat, dogs even birds – other people romantically lost in their own love affair with a significant other and built-in “best friend.”

But there’s more to best friends – those in the military bound forever by loyalty and trust, a nurse and their patient with an eternal bond of the heart or even two orphaned dogs adopted at the same time, remaining besties? What’s your Best Friends Forever story? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Do any items in your shop relate to the theme, Best Friends Forever? We’d love to see your item and the reason why you think it’s unique to friendship.

Linda from LazyYVintage says

Penny and I have been friends since the 5th grade. Over the years and states apart we still talk, text, and snap almost daily. With 50 years of friendship together, she is family to me. She knows me inside out and I know her that way too. She is quirky, fun, and a master fiber artist. Contrast with my serious side, she can make me laugh at myself and remember reality.

This set of Cotillion is from Penny’s grandmother. Her grandparents worked in a factory in Chicago IL. Her grandmother working a full-time job in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. She bought this set and kept in a china cabinet. Most likely never really used. When she passed, it went to Penny’s Mom Marie. Marie kept them tucked away in boxes, never used them. Two years ago, when Marie passed away, Penny gave them to me. The items listed are a few “extra” because most of the set I use everyday. I just felt it was time that they were used, admired, and loved everyday.

When Penny is in town, we sit at the kitchen table; me with my tea and Penny with her coffee using Marie’s dishes. It makes us both happy.

Love your story, Linda!

My BFF story is about my husband and me! I certainly never thought when I asked him out, in January 1984(!), that we would become lifetime partners. As anyone who is in a really long-term relationship can tell you – it’s a lot of work! However, it is worth it because the value of having someone in your life who can share long ago memories, get your jokes, be your rock in difficult times, or just someone you can be completely yourself with, is undefinable. I feel really fortunate to be in my relationship – I must have known something all those years ago!

We were there for each other during times of divorce and loss of parents. We have gardened together, had a monthly breakfast in one of our favorite cafes, and we visited every nursery and yarn store in the area. We often sat together and knitted while chatting. we are trusting each other which is the biggest gift. A few months ago she moved to a different state to care for her dying dad. I miss her terribly. We text almost every day, but sometimes it is the right thing to send a handwritten card with some heartfelt words when texting and email is just not the appropriate way of communication.

Bird Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

This day is mostly about the plight of captive birds, but also about celebrating birds. This day is on 1/5.

There are so many birds in this world and so much to know about them. Here at CIJ we want to know what you have in your shop related to birds.

Leila Valois from ValoisFelts says I love birds, and they’re great fun to felt. Some of my favourites are curlews, pigeons and robins.

There’s not many come into my garden but I love all the ones that do and always have seeds and water available so they feel welcome.

Sue from SuesAkornShop states I love the spring time and when the birds are everywhere. I enjoy hearing the ships they make as they talk to and with each other. There are so many different kinds flying about and eating from the feeder and I love watching each and every one of them. I love owls, cardinals and robins are everywhere.

Cardinals live in our area year-round, and enjoy feasting on berries from our flowering shrubs or the insects that they catch. The male cardinal has brilliant red feathers, but his mate is better equipped to blend into the foliage where they raise their young.

Linda from LazyYVintage says is it spring yet? Robins are always one of my favorites as they mean the winter is leaving and spring has began. I participate in the winter bird count, where with the Audubon Society you take a day to track the birds in your yard or local nature areas. We feed the birds and document the ones we see on that day. Unfortunately, Robins are not on our list as they migrate and will only be back in the spring.

I made this brooch (and her companions) to bring attention to the lives of battery hens who are used and abused in the egg industry. It may seem counter intuitive to make a beautiful piece of jewelry about a subject like this. However, it is different and eye-catching; and I’ve always found that people are more willing to listen about an issue if you approach the subject nicely. You can definitely speak out for the birds with my Hen brooch!

Bislet from MerryXmasfromSweden wishes everyone a Happy Bird Day!

My favorite bird is the bullfinch. I even have a bullfinch picture on my mailbox! Bullfinches are extremely shy birds so it can take years until I see them in the garden. On very harsh winter days I might find them at my garden feeders.

Then I am happy for many days!

Did you know that the bullfinch has a special food sac? They have developed special food sacs which are positioned in the floor of the mouth, allowing the parents to bring back food to their chicks.

They are the only species of finch to have such sacs. Amazing birds!

Enjoy my Christmas table cloth showing bullfinches eating rowan berries so that you can admire them!

Keeping Out The Chill

Contributor post by Catherine of DesignsByCnC

As the winter season settles in, it ushers in a dazzling display of glistening snowflakes and the chill of Jack Frost nipping at your nose.  In addition to going to work every day, during the Christmas Season, we are often out and about, even more attending parties and events.

When the objective is to stay warm, yet be fashionable how do we select an outfit that meets these requirements?

  • For a casual day, I like the look of pants, top, and jacket in neutral colors. Then spice it up with splashes of color from accessories like shoes, hats or scarves.

  • For a day at the office, pair up a colorful summer maxi dress with some tights. Accessorize with a pair of boots and leather jacket.

  • Another great look is a pastel colored maxi skirt combined with a dark-colored sweater. Complete the look with a coordinating dark jacket, oversized scarf and boots.

I posed the question “In the winter, how do you stay warm and fashionable?” to members of the Etsy Christmas In July Team.  Here are their suggestions and a winter weather fashion accessory to help keep you in style.

Marie-Antoinknit from 9ElizabethStreet says:

With hats! I have always loved a good hat, and now that I make them myself, I have styles and colors for just about every outfit, season, and mood. Hats keep you warm and can also cure bad hair days. Got to run to the store before you have a chance to get tidied up? Not a problem with a good hat! I usually end up with the test model for new hats, so they can sometimes be a little quirky, but that’s fine because I am too. (And many thanks to my good friend for the excellent photograph and her lovely daughter modeling.)

There is nothing like a faux fur jacket to keep your warm and stylish on those cold winters nights when you have to go out.

I made this design for one of my daughters who had to go out a lot for dinners for work and she was always cold. She needed something to keep her warm while still looking good!

Here in Florida, where I am, it does get cold, just not for long. A nice light shawl or sweater is perfect for most Winter days in the South. This lovely angel wing crochet shawl is all done in white. Perfect for evenings outdoors, church, parties, or just a light piece to wear around the house.

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz discusses:

I grew up in Germany where winters can be really cold – and long. Now I’m living in Northern California where winters are pretty mild. We have a few frosty nights and mornings, but compared what I used to experience this is nothing. However, a hand knit hat comes in handy when I go out for an early walk, and the leaves stitched on the hat remind of warmer days to come

Secret Pal or Secret Santa Gift Ideas

Contributor post by Opal from Apron Strings Owl Lady

They are used as a fun way to honor co-workers, to surprise other’s at holidays, birthdays and other events – even secretly sent in the mail – have you ever participated in a secret pal gift give-a-way?

Most are conducted by just leaving the gift on the person’s desk or workplace. Some of my friends call these Amigo Secreto (secret friend) or Amigo Invisible (invisible friend). What is this called in your country?

With Etsy, it’d be very simple to send secret gifts to special people in our lives. Thank you Alicia of AliciasFindings for thinking of this topic. Do you have items in your shop that would be perfect for this type of small gift giving? We’d love to see them and hear your story.

I love Secret Santa gift exchanges at work! And trying to guess who the gift-giver was. The game often helps break the ice, solidify friendships and spark new ones!

Here’s a fun Secret Santa Gift great for the office – a mousepad adorned with Love Locks that used to adorn bridges that spanned the Seine River in Paris. The topic of the love locks will certainly bring out conversations and it’s perfect for a traveling buddy or to send a subtle romantic message. . . .

This is a fun and decorative gift for a secret santa. It’s fun to draw names and then see what cute little thing or funny thing you can find to make someone else smile. It’s always a fun surprise!

In my last office we had a Kris Kringle where all of our names were written down and went into a bucket. We each chose a slip (keeping it secret of course!) then bought a gift with a value up to $20 for our special colleague. All the pressies went into the Santa Sack and were given out at our Christmas Party. The Banksia Bomb was especially created with affordable festive giving in mind 🙂

I always loved being the giver or the recipient on these Santa and secret pal gifting days. So much fun!

I would probably just make them something like this if it was for a church friend, or even a co worker that I knew what she liked. It’s a take on a country bird bath theme, a little rustic then turned into an inspirational white Dove gift.

At work when we did Secret Santa, it tended to be the secretary who organised who got their exchange – I think it involved lots of sealed envelopes!

I think this would be a lovely gift for a dog loving colleague, especially those who often have their pet photos on their desk. Or alternatively, it is suitable if you are in a group who posts their gift to their exchange partner

I love Secret Santas, they are fun and just create joy. We did it back in college and my daughter did it with her friends while they were still in school. It was always very enjoyable to find a little gift. I have chosen a little holiday ornament on a 3×3 canvas that is not necessarily specific for Christmas but is perfect for any lover of nature, wild animals like moose and wolves, and just for winter in general. It can be hung in a tree, on a mantelpiece or wherever is space.

If I didn’t already have one from a secret Santa friend, I might not of shared this one.

In college, we did a Secret Santa and it was loads of fun. It was a great way to get to know the other girls in my dorm and to relieve some of the stress from final exams.

One of the gifts that I received was an adorable stuffed hippo wearing a stocking cap nestled inside a small Christmas stocking. I still have him today and each year we place him under our Christmas tree.

For a sweet and easy gift for a Secret Santa gift exchange, this Christmas Cocoa Holder is perfect. Just add a packet of cocoa and a peppermint stick and your gift is ready to go.

Secret Santa is especially fun when it’s HARD to figure out who gave what!! I like the Secret Santa game that involves SWAPPING! A gift is opened and the next person can choose to “keep or swap” for someone else’s already opened gift! It keeps the game going just a little bit longer! ( A favorite for my family – but then I have some ruthless swappers living at my house! )

Wouldn’t it be fun to choose a “vintage” Secret Santa gift for your next office exchange? This little cutie is a great choice because it works with any holiday décor. Perfect on your desk too! Vintage reindeer NEVER get thrown away! They just keep delighting young and old for years to come!

I love Secret Santa! Its a tradition i have been part of since my days in grad school. In school we were on a limited budget, so most of the presents were handmade, which was even more amazing! One of the gifts i received was a handmade Ganesha statue , another time i got a pencil sketch (which was super cool!). at work the budget was higher so that meant store bought presents like scented candles or mugs.

A really cool Secret Santa present would be this handmade custom pet portrait for that colleague or friend who loves his/ her pet!

Corkycrafts from Corkycrafts says

Secret Santa brings back many fun memories of grammar school. Our teacher would ask us to bring ornaments into school handmade and give them to her in a brown lunch bag and she would distribute to students by hiding them in your locker or in your desk while you were at lunch or recess, which means you never know who got your ornament until they opened it. Secret was you couldn’t tell who got yours or who had you unless somebody squealed. One year in 4th grade I got a handmade wood bell ornament and many decades later its still displayed on my tree.

This would make a great Secret Santa gift for work or school or even for your child’s teacher.

Secret Santa exchanges have always been a great holiday tradition. Most of the secret Santa exchanges I have been apart of have included the exchanging of Christmas Ornaments… I think they are a thoughtful gift and whether you know someone well or not you are likely to find an ornament that will fit the person and your budget.

For a Secret Santa exchange I would definitely go with an ornament. In my shop I have dozen of designs that can be customized by color or hair style making an ornament perfect for your recipient.

I loved being apart of the Secret Santa type parties they were so much fun!!!. As the bag was being passed around for you to choose a name you could tell everyone was hoping somebody who was a great gift giver pulled their name. So, I think getting something the person has listed on their wish list would be a pleasant surprise especially if this were there only gift.
