Bird Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

This day is mostly about the plight of captive birds, but also about celebrating birds. This day is on 1/5.

There are so many birds in this world and so much to know about them. Here at CIJ we want to know what you have in your shop related to birds.

Leila Valois from ValoisFelts says I love birds, and they’re great fun to felt. Some of my favourites are curlews, pigeons and robins.

There’s not many come into my garden but I love all the ones that do and always have seeds and water available so they feel welcome.

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz said birds are so cute, I love to watch them and birds singing is the best sound in the morning. I planted my garden in such a way that it provides food, water and shelter for them, and I’m so happy that there is quite a variety of birds hanging out there.

Sue from SuesAkornShop states I love the spring time and when the birds are everywhere. I enjoy hearing the ships they make as they talk to and with each other. There are so many different kinds flying about and eating from the feeder and I love watching each and every one of them. I love owls, cardinals and robins are everywhere.

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA discusses that I love to hear the cardinals in my back yard as they “talk” with each other about building their nest, raising their babies, and finding food to eat! Cardinals live in our area year-round, and enjoy feasting on berries from our flowering shrubs or the insects that they catch. The male cardinal has brilliant red feathers, but his mate is better equipped to blend into the foliage where they raise their young.

Linda from LazyYVintage says is it spring yet? Robins are always one of my favorites as they mean the winter is leaving and spring has began. I participate in the winter bird count, where with the Audubon Society you take a day to track the birds in your yard or local nature areas. We feed the birds and document the ones we see on that day. Unfortunately, Robins are not on our list as they migrate and will only be back in the spring.

Traci Braithwaite from mytoffeeapple said this original painting in ochre red oils. The Emu is an Australian native flightless bird the size of an Ostrich.
I love to see these characters the Emu running around in the bush and the open space where the Banksia trees grow in my coastal village located on the East coast of Australia.

Heather from ArabellaBlossoms states when I am in the garden or enjoying a walk in the neighbourhood I enjoy the sight and sound of the birds. We have had some hot days in Melbourne, Australia recently. In fact so hot (mid-30’s in ºCelcius) that we missed the sounds of the birds some days. They must have temporarily found a cooler and shadier place to hide from the sun and heat.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage discussed that I am a bird lover! We have lots of feeders around the yard and enjoy the songs and activity of many feathered friends. Winters can be brutal in Michigan, so we have a de-icer in the birdbath. On especially cold winter days—Bluebirds come to enjoy the warm water!

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery says I am a bird lover, bird watcher, and bird feeder! In my previous career I work in animal welfare, so I am well aware of the sad state of affairs for captive birds. This includes birds in the pet industry and birds in the food industry.

I made this brooch (and her companions) to bring attention to the lives of battery hens who are used and abused in the egg industry. It may seem counter intuitive to make a beautiful piece of jewelry about a subject like this. However, it is different and eye-catching; and I’ve always found that people are more willing to listen about an issue if you approach the subject nicely. You can definitely speak out for the birds with my Hen brooch!

Heather Youngblood from youngbloodMADE said I did a series of illustrations in October of girls wearing various types of masks. This is my “bird girl” – because who wouldn’t love to be a bird for a day?

Arlene from ThisandThatCrafter discussed that we love hearing the birds in our yard. We don’t have bird feeders in the trees because we have cats but we are having a feeder built on a pole that we will place away from the trees so our cats can not get them.

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says we are bird lovers and are fortunate to have swallows come back to our yard and nest every summer. They make multiple nests underneath our deck and we get to see their babies. It’s a nice close up of nature.

This quilt is a celebration of all animals and includes special rows of birds, butterflies and ladybugs, along with different birds in trees surrounded by the animal kingdom.

Lizzy and Boo from LizzysBibsandBobs said I love waking up every morning to the sounds of birds calling out and talking in the trees behind my house! Sometimes I lay in bed wondering what they are talking about.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese discussed that I love going on bushwalks. Today I went on a walk around a lake and I loved to hear the birds singing.

These are some paper birds I have made that can be used for craft, card making, buntings…

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt states that I love birds … and we have a couple of owl plaques in our shop!

I live in an area that’s rich with birds … and many species migrate through our area …

In fact, every year St. Bernard Parish hosts an annual bird festival in the spring … Artists & artisans, such as ourselves, show their finished works as well as demonstrating their various techniques …

At the bird festival, the LA Audubon Society capture, tag & release birds to gather info on their migration patterns … this is my favorite part of the festival because I get to help release the birds and watch them fly off!

Bislet from MerryXmasfromSweden wishes everyone a Happy Bird Day!

My favorite bird is the bullfinch. I even have a bullfinch picture on my mailbox! Bullfinches are extremely shy birds so it can take years until I see them in the garden. On very harsh winter days I might find them at my garden feeders.

Then I am happy for many days!

Did you know that the bullfinch has a special food sac? They have developed special food sacs which are positioned in the floor of the mouth, allowing the parents to bring back food to their chicks.

They are the only species of finch to have such sacs. Amazing birds!

Enjoy my Christmas table cloth showing bullfinches eating rowan berries so that you can admire them!

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

my toffee apple

Opened on May 24, 2015

I discovered on Etsy a successful cushion business and studied the process of starting and making a business like this succeed. Then I knew that this is definitely how I will have my unique images printed and sold.

This latest venture to publish my work is an exciting prospect because, my art is street ready and can be worn, displayed, used to decorate and compliment.

Imagine how much better that feeling would be with a piece of your very own piece of artwork.mytoffeeapple1

Tell us a bit about your products.

Hi I’m Traci. I am the owner and creator of my toffee apple. I make handmade cushions all original designs from my own art work and my own graphics, printed on 100% organic cotton fabric.

I have also beautiful vibrant greeting cards all my own designs all printed on sustainable card.

Using absolutely unique, vibrant, colourful designs.great for gifts and brightening people homes, offices, shops, and even travelling in a car with your favourite my toffee apple cushions.

What inspires your work?

Painting, drawing, creating is a something that has always been in my life, inspiration for me is found in almost everything around me, endless ideas from dreams, people, wildlife, plants, characters, feelings of that there is story to tell and so I paint .

Colours inspire me, the colours of  deep ambers of sunsets, the morning dew, the colour of turquoise and jade from gem stones, the street art of Mexico, faces, expressions, other worlds, surrealism, realism.mytoffeeapple2

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

Goals for customers to buy a beautifully sewn unique colourful throw cushions, and greeting cards to match and for the people purchasing the product to be happy with their purchase, service and packaging. These will be available at local markets, online Etsy shop and in select retail shops. I will be insuring my products remain at a high standard, as well as face to face and online customer service.

I would like to be financially independent at the end of the year, starting by selling a cushion a day.

Have a product that customers just want to come back for more.

Introducing and creating new and fresh new images throughout the year.

Network and develop relations with retail shops.

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

My unique designs have stood out from many other cushion designs,my use of vibrant colours, my designs are diverse and unique to my toffee apple.

Also having custom-made designs that my customers have been so happy with.mytoffeeapple3

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

I have a separate studio in my house, beautiful light space where I have my easel set up overlooking an extraordinary view of a winding river, and blue mountains in the background.

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

Custom orders getting shipments of prints on fabric on time. I might minimize this issue by being aware of lead times for suppliers and ensure to allow for this when taking customer orders also ensuring to have stock holding so I don’t run completely out of stock.mytoffeeapple4

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Etsy can be a test of patience, so keep marketing your product via word of mouth, networking and online marketing. It can be a slow process, so be positive and confident of your product, then other people will be positive and confident also and will love your product even more.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I live in a beautiful part of the world coastal Australia, so my 10-year-old daughter keeps me busy we love swimming in the cool clear rivers and body surfing in the magnificent beaches. Barbecues, cooking and going to the cinema, meeting up with friends and just having lots of good old belly laughs.

Painting and drawing at any given moment, that’s every day!mytoffeeapple5

What is your favorite quote?

“Everything is energy. The whole universe is energy.”

Make Your Dreams Come True Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Make Your Dreams Come True Day gives you the opportunity to do something to realize your goals and dreams. Whatever your dreams are, they usually don’t come true without some effort on your part. So, today is the perfect opportunity to do something about it.

Here at Christmas in July team we wanted to know what your dreams are, especially in relation to your business.

Traci Braithwaite from mytoffeeapple says:

I love to have my cushions in living rooms, cars/vans, restaurants, cafe shops, resorts, man caves, business, of all descriptions all over the world, custom-made for peoples desires and tastes.

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio states:

My business dream come true is really to be so busy selling on Etsy that I can’t handle it. My short-term goal, I guess that would be a cat nap dream, is to sell one item a day. . . or more, of course! I hope to accomplish that by reaching my target market and revealing more of my personality and creativity so that I stand out from other artists. I think this printable reflects that: if you want to reach your goals you have to work at it – be active, celebrate life and be yourself – that always works best for me.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese discussed:

My husband and I love to travel. It is harder to go overseas now with two young boys. We live in Australia in a spot where it never snows. It would be wonderful one day to go to the other side of the world and have a white Christmas! This card set is just that! Oh and I would love to build a snowman one day too.

Maha from MadeOnKailash stated:

My dream is to have long travel in South Asia. I admire India and already have been there for several times, that’s why my shop is named after great mountain Kailash. But my dream is to go there for a long time and also visit some neighbouring countries. And I always can take my micro macrame art with me and convert my impressions in new creations! Maybe one day I’ll have something which will be really made on Kailash in my shop!

My dream for my Etsy shop is to build it up so that I’m actually making money (instead of spending more than I make) by the time I retire from my grown up job. Then I can retire, and step into my shop full-time and already be making some income. I love making gifts. I’m so tickled when people ask me to send a gift set directly to their recipient. I even include a handmade, and handwritten card for them free of charge!

Dreams often begin with a wish but only become reality when we take steps to work on them. That said, there is something magical about casting your dream into the wind and waiting for it to come back to you. When was the last time you made a wish with one of these?

Laura from ChickenJungle said:

My 5-year goal for my shop is to sell enough to get my own place again… a tiny house, a big fenced yard for my dog, and a chicken yard.. But it has to be somewhere close to town with public transit….yeah I know that is going to be hard to find but I’m very frugal so I don’t need much.

A wider goal for my shop is to increase public appreciation of chickens. They’re wonderful animals, and deserve to be treated that way!
