Daily Inspirations

Contributor post by Julie from EveryoneLovesGifts0

We at Etsy Christmas In July love to see pictures and know what is your Daily Inspiration? Why do you make the items you make? What gives you the inspiration to make it? Your inspiration can be anything that gives you the creative bug and we want to know.

Pam Colangelo from PearlsVintagebyPam says; Sunshine brings me happiness and inspiration. Unfortunately we don’t have a lot of sun in Syracuse. That’s why we spend time in Cape Cod. This is a happy plate! Sunshine and rainbows inspire me to push through life!

Aparticle Zwolle from JHFWBeadsAndFindings says; Raindrops falling from the rooftops.

Corkycrafts from Corkycrafts says; Inspiration from your senses come to mind. Sense of smell, sight fragrant flowers colors comes to my mind. How can anybody not see inspiration in crafting from colorful flowers? I love to share things that can bring smiles to others. Especially with flowers. I like to share them with my friends.

Cindy Blakeslee from AllThatCraftyJazz says; This pattern is for a cute crochet fox phone cozy/case. It’s perfect to keep your cell phone in or to make as a gift for someone special. He has button eyes and a big button nose for the closure.

Christine from heartfeltgiver says;  About two years ago we moved from NJ to a small farm town in IL with a lot of German influence.

Biergarten Distressed Sign Wood

Cindy Humphrey from Cynhumphry says; I like to use color palettes as my inspiration or take a photo from nature and turn into something elegant using the same colors in the photo.

Floating Teacup

Sherri from ButterflyFeetDigital says; A lot of my inspiration comes from seeing color combinations while watching TV or leafing through a magazine. Sometimes a new color combination will stick in my head and I will start to see it more – in a commercial even, on the new! I don’t remember exactly where I first saw this color combo but I began to see it more and more, so I had to make a new paper pack.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese says; I love finding new pretty papers to use in my creations! My inspiration comes from the designs on the paper as well as my surroundings like the garden. These gift tags are made with gorgeous Japanese papers that I love!

Dorota from YORNAMENTS says; My garden is my inspiration. It is not huge but it is VERY full. It is full of trees, evergreen shrubs, perennial plants, tall grasses and colorful flowers. The garden is full of rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels and of course birds. They are my favorite, as they sing beautifully and visit me often on my patio. I keep watching these birds from my kitchen window, while I wash the dishes. It is truly better then TV for me. It makes me really happy creating imaginary birds. I love when they come to life in my hands. I have so many bird ornament plans to create for my shop. Here is just the beginning – Birds Gift for Her`

Ornaments Woodland Christmas Decorations

Przemila K from CanisArtStudio says; Inspiration is very important to me. I’m a painter and a great lover of animals and nature. I have two beautiful English Setters and daily I walk with my dogs in the meadows. Sometimes I meet wild animals and it is a wonderful experience. I also love to ride a horse. Horses are my great love and that is why they are important for my creativity. Every day I bring to my house a new bouquet of wild flowers that I then sketch or paint on canvas. I also love watching how my dogs play. I have many friends who have dogs and sometimes I go to the dog shows to meet them and share our passion. It inspired me to paint their portraits and capture our pets. We would love to have them always with us …

Bird Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

This day is mostly about the plight of captive birds, but also about celebrating birds. This day is on 1/5.

There are so many birds in this world and so much to know about them. Here at CIJ we want to know what you have in your shop related to birds.

Leila Valois from ValoisFelts says I love birds, and they’re great fun to felt. Some of my favourites are curlews, pigeons and robins.

There’s not many come into my garden but I love all the ones that do and always have seeds and water available so they feel welcome.

Red robin on spade decoration

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz said birds are so cute, I love to watch them and birds singing is the best sound in the morning. I planted my garden in such a way that it provides food, water and shelter for them, and I’m so happy that there is quite a variety of birds hanging out there.

watercolor bird mini journal

Sue from SuesAkornShop states I love the spring time and when the birds are everywhere. I enjoy hearing the ships they make as they talk to and with each other. There are so many different kinds flying about and eating from the feeder and I love watching each and every one of them. I love owls, cardinals and robins are everywhere.

Owl kitchen towel

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA discusses that I love to hear the cardinals in my back yard as they “talk” with each other about building their nest, raising their babies, and finding food to eat! Cardinals live in our area year-round, and enjoy feasting on berries from our flowering shrubs or the insects that they catch. The male cardinal has brilliant red feathers, but his mate is better equipped to blend into the foliage where they raise their young.

Linda from LazyYVintage says is it spring yet? Robins are always one of my favorites as they mean the winter is leaving and spring has began. I participate in the winter bird count, where with the Audubon Society you take a day to track the birds in your yard or local nature areas. We feed the birds and document the ones we see on that day. Unfortunately, Robins are not on our list as they migrate and will only be back in the spring.

I love to see these characters the Emu running around in the bush and the open space where the Banksia trees grow in my coastal village located on the East coast of Australia.

Heather from ArabellaBlossoms states when I am in the garden or enjoying a walk in the neighbourhood I enjoy the sight and sound of the birds. We have had some hot days in Melbourne, Australia recently. In fact so hot (mid-30’s in ºCelcius) that we missed the sounds of the birds some days. They must have temporarily found a cooler and shadier place to hide from the sun and heat.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage discussed that I am a bird lover! We have lots of feeders around the yard and enjoy the songs and activity of many feathered friends. Winters can be brutal in Michigan, so we have a de-icer in the birdbath. On especially cold winter days—Bluebirds come to enjoy the warm water!

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery says I am a bird lover, bird watcher, and bird feeder! In my previous career I work in animal welfare, so I am well aware of the sad state of affairs for captive birds. This includes birds in the pet industry and birds in the food industry.

I made this brooch (and her companions) to bring attention to the lives of battery hens who are used and abused in the egg industry. It may seem counter intuitive to make a beautiful piece of jewelry about a subject like this. However, it is different and eye-catching; and I’ve always found that people are more willing to listen about an issue if you approach the subject nicely. You can definitely speak out for the birds with my Hen brooch!

Heather Youngblood from youngbloodMADE said I did a series of illustrations in October of girls wearing various types of masks. This is my “bird girl” – because who wouldn’t love to be a bird for a day?

Arlene from ThisandThatCrafter discussed that we love hearing the birds in our yard. We don’t have bird feeders in the trees because we have cats but we are having a feeder built on a pole that we will place away from the trees so our cats can not get them.

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says we are bird lovers and are fortunate to have swallows come back to our yard and nest every summer. They make multiple nests underneath our deck and we get to see their babies. It’s a nice close up of nature.

This quilt is a celebration of all animals and includes special rows of birds, butterflies and ladybugs, along with different birds in trees surrounded by the animal kingdom.

Lizzy and Boo from LizzysBibsandBobs said I love waking up every morning to the sounds of birds calling out and talking in the trees behind my house! Sometimes I lay in bed wondering what they are talking about.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese discussed that I love going on bushwalks. Today I went on a walk around a lake and I loved to hear the birds singing.

These are some paper birds I have made that can be used for craft, card making, buntings…

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt states that I love birds … and we have a couple of owl plaques in our shop!

I live in an area that’s rich with birds … and many species migrate through our area …

In fact, every year St. Bernard Parish hosts an annual bird festival in the spring … Artists & artisans, such as ourselves, show their finished works as well as demonstrating their various techniques …

At the bird festival, the LA Audubon Society capture, tag & release birds to gather info on their migration patterns … this is my favorite part of the festival because I get to help release the birds and watch them fly off!

Bislet from MerryXmasfromSweden wishes everyone a Happy Bird Day!

My favorite bird is the bullfinch. I even have a bullfinch picture on my mailbox! Bullfinches are extremely shy birds so it can take years until I see them in the garden. On very harsh winter days I might find them at my garden feeders.

Then I am happy for many days!

Did you know that the bullfinch has a special food sac? They have developed special food sacs which are positioned in the floor of the mouth, allowing the parents to bring back food to their chicks.

They are the only species of finch to have such sacs. Amazing birds!

Enjoy my Christmas table cloth showing bullfinches eating rowan berries so that you can admire them!

Hello, Everyone!

If you’re one of those crazies like us who LOVES Halloween, you might be starting to get ready already! Also known as Samhain by some, this is one of the most magical times of the year. Samhain predates the Roman feast of the Dead, Lemuria, and All Hallow’s Eve – the eve of the Christian holiday to honor the saints, All Saint’s Day. The secular holiday today is known as Halloween. All of these festivals, despite their different names, focus on reverence for the dead, as well as a time to communicate with the deceased.

What do you do to prepare for Halloween, or celebrate your special ‘Bewitching Hour’? We asked our CIJ teamies to share their stories and bewitching items that show their love for this special time, and here’s what they told us.

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit said:

No other holiday provides the fun and festivities like Halloween! Although we don’t sell anything specifically for Halloween, we love to see what the Etsy community delivers during October. From choosing the perfect costume to planning the perfect party, Etsy sellers have some of the best ideas around and shopping on Etsy is never more fun than it is in the fall. Go Etsy and get in the spirit!
We love to go all out on our costumes, visit haunted attractions, and see the creative decorations in our community.
After a long night of thrills and treats, kick off your shoes and enjoy your favorite spirit in style! We encourage responsible enjoyment of spirits in moderation and good company. Cheers to all of the responsible adults who make Halloween a fun and enjoyable holiday across the USA!

We are American, and loved trick or treating when the kids were little. But we traveled around a lot and lived in countries where trick-or-treating didn’t happen. In those cases we would have a big fun Halloween party, inviting neighbors and friends of many nationalities who were all too eager to wear a silly costume, bob for apples and drink cider.

My husband and I LOVE Halloween! When the kids were younger and we lived in town (we live in the country now) our house had the most creepy decorations around and people would drive from all over to see our house. We tried to do something different every year and it was a big event. The kids loved helping and now they decorate or do something similar at their own houses.

Eventually we moved and now we live in the country so no one is around to see anything, I miss doing all the decorations so what I do now is decorate my Etsy Shop Banner, my Avatar wears a witch hat, and I also decorate other online places like Facebook banners, etc.

I think people love Halloween because it is a fun way to be scared, and be someone else for a night. I love to see all the little ones in their cute outfits, and I love Fall décor. Bohemian Style

Contributor post by Sheila of BeadyEyedBird

Bohemian, Gypsy, Boho, Ethnic, Hippie — whatever you choose to call it, it’s FUN!

In modern usage, the term “Bohemian” is applied to people who live unconventional, usually artistic, lives. The original “Bohemians” were travelers or refugees from central Europe (hence, the French bohémien, for “gypsy”).

At the beginning of the Bohemian ‘movement’, it was said that gypsy girls themselves “… are sexy and delightful precisely because they do not give a hoot for fashion.”

When the style was first identified, it was the early 20th century. Fast forward to the 60’s & 70’s when major designers started to routinely promote the “peasant look” and selling a range of “uniquely eccentric clothes”. (How many of you still have some of those in the back of your closet, like me??)

Fast forward again to the late 1980s, when variants of the short and fundamentally un-Bohemian rah-rah skirt (which originated with cheerleaders) were combined with leather or denim to create a look with some Bohemian or even gothic features. New names emerged, like ‘hippie chic’ and ‘boho-chic’. Similar styles were sometimes referred to as “bobo” or “ashcan chic” or “luxe grunge” — with leading proponents including actresses Mary-Kate Olsen and Zooey Deschanel.

Whatever it’s called, and whatever the iteration/era, we L.O.V.E. it. We asked our CIJ teamies to tell us their stories about their favorite ‘boho’ style (or its cousin) — and share an item from their shop that represents it. Here’s the cool stuff we got.

Robyn Campbell from RobynFayeDesigns says:

To me, bohemian means freedom or freestyle, lots of colour and textures. I would love to have my own little caravan and travel like a gypsy following the warm weather. When I was 18 I lived with my boyfriend in a transit van for two months then graduated to a small caravan and traveled up and down the east coast of Australia for 6 months. It was fun but difficult to get work with no fixed address.  Maybe when we retire I can convince hubby to travel! Until then I’ll stick to making caravan coasters and dreaming!

Nancy Duncan  from EponasCrystals says:

When I was growing up in the seventies, it was all about bell bottoms and peace signs, beaded necklace, clog shoes, and wild head bands. We called it hippie, but now it’s “hippie-chic”. Here is my modern version of the “hippie chic” style.

GypsyGeneralStore from GypsyGeneralStore says:

I was an “oops” in my family; born several years after my older sisters. I was the recipient of all of their “hand me downs” – from clothes to record albums… when everyone else was listening to New Kids on the Block, I was rocking out to Led Zeppelin and the Doors. To this day, I have a deep appreciation for old things – passed down from generation to generation and I think it’s largely due to my “hand me down” childhood experience. I love anything with a story…

Hit The Books – A Back to School Preview

Contributor post by Catherine of DesignsByCnC

It seems just like yesterday that we were eagerly anticipating the last day of school and the beginning of summer vacation.  A time when our daily schedules would slow down and we could enjoy long leisurely family meals out on the patio.  Time spent together on bike rides and walks through the hiking trails.

After the festivities of our 4th of July celebration, I always get a bit melancholy realizing the summer is half way over and it’s time to start thinking about getting ready for the school year to start again.  Just this morning I began our ritual of printing out the upcoming school calendar and making plans to go shopping for clothes and school supplies.

But going back to school doesn’t have to be a difficult task for you or your children. I asked the members of the Etsy Christmas In July team to share their tips for getting the kids ready to go back to school that will make the transition a better experience for everyone.

Heather Barber from MooseintheMint had this tip to share:

Chunky key rings/key chains make it easier to keep track of locker keys and are much harder to lose – one of my teens lost 3 locker keys in 2 weeks when we was 14! He then didn’t get his deposit back at the end of the year.

They also work for garage keys, oil tanks and sheds!

Dotty Wooden Keyring

Sherri from ButterflyFeetDigital shared her idea for staying organized:

How easy it is to lose track of everything – when is that homework due, when is soccer practice, when is back to school night for the parents, when is Christmas vacation etc. Calendars and planners are great for school kids! 2016 calendars and planners are on sale in my shop, so it’s easy to afford this year’s and one for 2017.

Half Size 2017 Planner Calendar

Draco N. Knut from DragoninKnots  has this suggestion for college students:

Buying textbooks from the university bookstore is a freshman mistake. Start your textbook shopping early, so you can buy online and save money. Compare prices using bookfinder.com to find the best website to order books.

And here’s a book weight to hold those textbooks open while you are doing your homework:

Pale Green Book Weight

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage suggested this idea for getting college students active in campus life:

If you have a student leaving for college, send them tickets to a concert, play or other event on campus. This gets them out of the dorm and encourages them to meet other students with similar interests.

Vintage Cliff Notes – The Great Gatsby

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese remarked:

Planners seem to be all the rage at the moment, helping keep track of everyone’s busy lives! These planner clips are great for marking your place in your planner and have a lovely rustic feel about them.

Rustic Planner Clips

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit suggested:

Learning to write and developing good handwriting is so essential to the development of young minds. To establish a good foundation, we recommend a quality pen. Success starts with always having a pen at hand and the best way to keep it is personalization!

Our deluxe rosewood ballpoint pens are lightweight, narrow in diameter, and include a rubber grip to provide the perfect instrument for learning penmanship and practicing it at any age. Personalization is included and you can choose any design or font in our portfolio.

What’s The One App/Tool/Platform You Can’t Live Without?

Contributor Post by Sheila of BeadyEyedBird

We asked our great Etsy entrepreneur friends from the Christmas In July team:

What is the one app or tool or platform you CANNOT live without in running your online business?

Here’s what they told us!

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit said:

The pen is mightier! Technology is continually evolving and the personal computer has replaced the need for so many of the items that once filled our homes and offices. The modern pen represents an evolution from the crude objects used to develop the first written languages to more elegant forms of penmanship and the beautification of writing in more recent history. The pen was certainly being employed in the creation of the technology which has lessened our dependence on the pen. Yet still the pen is with us!

No matter how much technology you have in your homes or office, occasionally you should just turn them off. Grab a pen and a piece of paper and let your imagination take you where it wanders instead of going where your search engine tells you to go.

The one tool I could not and do not want to be without is the Etsy App on my phone. I cannot imagine life without the ease and convenience of logging into both Etsy shops on the go and also hearing the ‘cha’chings that ring from the app.

An item from my shop that continually gets hits and likes (and I hear the activity on my phone) are my owl shop items.
