Head In The Clouds

Contributor post by Alicia from AlicasFindings

When people say you “have your head in the clouds”, they mean your dreams or goals are so fantastical or impractical as to ever come true.

Here at CIJ we want to know all about any cloud or sky related items you have in your shop.

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit says as artists, we have our head in the clouds and seek to fly above them.

Tatiana dreams of travelling to every destination we ship a package to or design a custom frame for. Her art is an expression of her deeper desire to experience the world and her art inspires everyones imagination.

As a writer, Richard is a bibliophile and loves to post, message, and talk to customers about our products and services. Keep your imagination in full gear, we can bring your ideas to your doorstep using any canvas or concept you dream up, Making your dreams come to life is why we started our Etsy shop, we can design for any ideas you have in mind.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage said we have an interesting collection of antique stereoview cards in our Shop. These were originally viewed through a stereoscope to produce a 3D image. Today, these are great to display on a shelf as a fun travel prop.

This card features a famous lighthouse in Cuba, showing clouds in a blue sky background:

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery states my “head in the clouds” goal is to have people be more comfortable with more color in their lives – starting with colorful jewellery! This brooch is inspired by a traditional motif of a bird. In my mind, the yellow bird is representing joy while flying and singing in a beautiful blue summer sky!

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio discusses that I love this ‘cloudy’ theme. I’m a space-cadet whose head is always in the clouds. Stock Lane Studio offers great sky blue printable art that gives off nothing but positive vibes. I like to think that artists and colorful characters would love to have this Happy quote decorating their walls.

Mrs. A. from 2aEmporium says this little guy represents the innocent child-like dreaming of us all. The “head in the clouds” kind of wishing and hoping. Many of us have sat just as this little boy gazing up at the stars reciting this sweet little rhyme and hoping that our wish would come true.

“Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have this wish I wish tonight.”

The Joy Of Color

Contributor Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

As an artist I love colors of every hue, brightness, patina, neon! You name it I have used it in some aspect in an art or craft item. As a collector, I love the unique and wonderful vintage item, the older the better – in many aged woods and metals, or any combination, even plastic and fabrics!

If this topic has swept over you with magnificent rainbows, fluttering golden wings and blue-green ocean waves Please share your thoughts! We’d love to hear them and see your items.

Leila Blakely from LasLovelies says

I have always loved the bright and bold color palette . My favorite is the rainbows I get to see from my view into the river valley below me. I have several beautiful double rainbow photos I have been able to capture. God’s handiwork and promise.

This little gal is the epitome of a rainbow. Ha! Her colorful leggings and bright multi colored cumber bun. I really don’t think anyone can get any closer to a bright and bold statement as this little doll. As much as this palette is my favorite I certainly don’t think I would be caught dead wearing an outfit like this. Ha!

I enjoy beautiful colors, and a cold, drab winter makes me anxious for spring when the green shoots of grass begin to appear and colorful Easter eggs can be hidden among the budding spring flowers. This gift bag is perfect for spring and for Easter gifts; it is the color of spring!

As an artist I love getting my hands covered in paints. I seem to paint myself as well as any piece I am working on. My favorite color is Yellow warm and relaxing. I totally get lost in colors and thoughts while painting. Painting and designing my work bring joy to my life with a slash of color to my world.

Soo….as an interior designer, I’m an equal opportunity COLOR lover!! There really isn’t ANY color I don’t enjoy working with! I often push folks to step away from the safe and boring ” beige” as I know they are always more thrilled with the “feeling” a color brings to an interior.

As for my ETSY work…COLOR is always critical. I like things to blend well, so I’m very “picky” about how an art piece comes together. Every addition to a piece has to be complimentary. I consider the “balance” of color throughout every work as well. Here are Holt Howard Kitties that are “Vintage Valentine’s brought to life!” Putting together a pleasing palette for this pair was fun for me!

Many people are afraid of color! As a designer, we love to start with a few key pieces in solids and start adding colors and textures. Most kitchens tend to have a neutral color palette and this is one of the easiest rooms to add pops and sparks of color! Start with a colorful vase, a piece of artwork or a series of colorful tea towels. It will liven up the room and your enhance your spirit!

I don’t think I ever met a color I didn’t like (except maybe mustard yellow). When I find a design or pattern I like, my first inclination is to make it in every color that the fiber comes in. I have made my winter hats in all the basics – black, brown, gray, blue – and have more to work through. My favorite so far is this bright pistachio green, accented with a hint of white & gray alpaca.

I love colour (even when it is not in fashion – lol) and one of my first memories of colour is looking through a kaleidoscope as a child. The patterns and colours left an imprint on my mind that I am still inspired by today.

These beads, available in a range of colours, remind me of the kaleidoscope effect because of the faceted surface which reflects colour, and look great when incorporated in jewellery, costume design , bunting, journalling and more.

Color is magical! It tells stories hidden in a piece of art. I love all colors ranging from black and white to pastel and bold rainbow colors. I guess it depends on my mood at that moment to decide which color to use in my painting. I am thankful to be able to enjoy colors and appreciate them as much as I can.

Once upon a time I was completely intimidated by color. As a then Manhattanite I tended to wear black – a lot. It was not until I began to take classes in jewelry design that my eyes were opened to the endless possibilities of color. In much of my work I lean toward bright colors and unusual pairings of disparate colors. Finding vintage materials in unusual colors or color pairings is always a joy.

These three necklaces feature a trio of vintage hand painted fish with a folk art vibe in bright and interesting color combinations. The fish were originally part of a large statement necklace. The original piece had large oxidized chain links with antique brass bells and etched fish as well as four smaller plump hand painted fish which I turned into earrings. The necklace was a vintage piece that belonged to a family member but no one seems to know its origins. Reimagining that original funky strand of odd bits of vintage painted wood and metal was such fun!

My favorite colors are that of a glorious sunrise. Pinks, blues, orange, and white, with the yellow of the sun mixed in. I made these earrings with that in mind.

We love to use different colors to tell a story with our listing photos. When photographing our new 7 ounce juice glasses last spring, the flowers in our yard where in full bloom and we picked the flowers in this listing photo from behind our garage. We love the way this listing came together and are looking forward to taking more pictures as soon as the flowers start to bloom.
We started offering wine and champagne glasses for the bridal party and on occasion would receive a special request for the Flower Girls and Jr. Bridesmaids so we decided to take action.  I LOVE color – which is evident if you take a scroll through my shop! I made these pendants after being inspired by the color of a glacier I saw, which was blue even though we think of ice or snow as white. As an artist I love creating many of my pieces with vibrant colors in mind. Color to me makes even a gloomy day seem brighter!! While my favorite colors are purple, red, coral, and turquoise I will still experiment with any color to its fullest potential. As you can see in this wristlet I love many shades of color and will use just about anything to bring it to life.

In my home I have painted the walls a neutral color so that I can use vibrant colors to bring life to each room and tell the story of what they are used for which leaves my guest walking wanting to take those ideas to implement in their own homes. Yes….color is the way to express yourself to its deepest level.

Inspire Your Heart With Art Day

Contributor  Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

A holiday always observed on January 31st of each year, Inspire Your Heart With Art Day is set aside for us to explore our own feelings, and how art of any medium affects our heart-strings – and heart.

Art of all types is embraced and appreciated for a variety of reasons – the beauty, the message, the technique – what does your heart tell you?

According to the website set aside for this day, “Of the broad spectrum of art created in the world, the pieces that move us to tears or cause us to burst out in joyous laughter remain with us for a life time. Whether we are touched through music or see into an artist soul through their work, art has the power to change us, to inspire our hearts.”

The day encourages all of us to get Inspired about art while exploring the many genres of art that inspire us individually. How will you celebrate this day – Perhaps by a visit to an art gallery, reading a good book, music appreciation, Ballet and theatrical arts, starting that masterpiece you’ve been putting off – or what we do everyday – Share our art with others here on Etsy?

Looking forward to your thoughts and comments.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns says

I will probably celebrate this day with a good novel followed by – ideally – an art house film…. and these can only be enjoyed with a good handmade cup filled with quality fair trade coffee or tea!

I definitely will be reading a good book – which could be one of the many beautiful coffee table books I have on my favorite artists! I am continually inspired by great artists use of color, and strive to use color well in my enamel work. This brooch was inspired by a photo of an artist friend of mine!

Well, this day happens to be our wedding anniversary, so I like to make a hand-made card for my husband. This card is fitting in so many ways. Mixed-media hand cut candles and flames add warmth to a dark winter day. This signifies the steadfast light and love in our marriage. Making a wish and blowing out the candles so many years ago has produced my dream come true.

I will make a trip to my local art museum. I love wandering around the contemporary art section; it’s such a constant source of inspiration. Hopefully, some of that inspiration will then be funneled into some new work of my own.

Flame – Pantone Fashion Color For Spring 2017

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

Color trends are a wonderful way to celebrate the seasons!

According to Pantone one of the top colors for Spring 2017 is Flame.

PANTONE 17-1462 Flame

A red-based orange, Flame, is gregarious and fun-loving. Flamboyant and vivacious, this wonderfully theatrical shade adds fiery heat to the spring 2017 palette.

Here’s a fun way to keep halls quiet and motivate students during testing season (coming up for lots of High School students right now). It’s printable, so it’s quick and easy and always at your finger tips. Would make a great teacher gift or home school decor.

Best Friends Forever

Best Friends Forever

To some people it’s their sister or brother, or a life long friend from Kindergarten up to adulthood, some their pets, cat, dogs even birds – other people romantically lost in their own love affair with a significant other and built-in “best friend.”

But there’s more to best friends – those in the military bound forever by loyalty and trust, a nurse and their patient with an eternal bond of the heart or even two orphaned dogs adopted at the same time, remaining besties? What’s your Best Friends Forever story? We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Do any items in your shop relate to the theme, Best Friends Forever? We’d love to see your item and the reason why you think it’s unique to friendship.

Linda from LazyYVintage says

Penny and I have been friends since the 5th grade. Over the years and states apart we still talk, text, and snap almost daily. With 50 years of friendship together, she is family to me. She knows me inside out and I know her that way too. She is quirky, fun, and a master fiber artist. Contrast with my serious side, she can make me laugh at myself and remember reality.

This set of Cotillion is from Penny’s grandmother. Her grandparents worked in a factory in Chicago IL. Her grandmother working a full-time job in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. She bought this set and kept in a china cabinet. Most likely never really used. When she passed, it went to Penny’s Mom Marie. Marie kept them tucked away in boxes, never used them. Two years ago, when Marie passed away, Penny gave them to me. The items listed are a few “extra” because most of the set I use everyday. I just felt it was time that they were used, admired, and loved everyday.

When Penny is in town, we sit at the kitchen table; me with my tea and Penny with her coffee using Marie’s dishes. It makes us both happy.

Love your story, Linda!

My BFF story is about my husband and me! I certainly never thought when I asked him out, in January 1984(!), that we would become lifetime partners. As anyone who is in a really long-term relationship can tell you – it’s a lot of work! However, it is worth it because the value of having someone in your life who can share long ago memories, get your jokes, be your rock in difficult times, or just someone you can be completely yourself with, is undefinable. I feel really fortunate to be in my relationship – I must have known something all those years ago!

We have gardened together, had a monthly breakfast in one of our favorite cafes, and we visited every nursery and yarn store in the area. We often sat together and knitted while chatting. we are trusting each other which is the biggest gift. A few months ago she moved to a different state to care for her dying dad. I miss her terribly. Bird Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

This day is mostly about the plight of captive birds, but also about celebrating birds. This day is on 1/5.

There are so many birds in this world and so much to know about them. Here at CIJ we want to know what you have in your shop related to birds.

Leila Valois from ValoisFelts says I love birds, and they’re great fun to felt. Some of my favourites are curlews, pigeons and robins.

There’s not many come into my garden but I love all the ones that do and always have seeds and water available so they feel welcome.

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz said birds are so cute, I love to watch them and birds singing is the best sound in the morning. I planted my garden in such a way that it provides food, water and shelter for them, and I’m so happy that there is quite a variety of birds hanging out there.

Sue from SuesAkornShop states I love the spring time and when the birds are everywhere. I enjoy hearing the ships they make as they talk to and with each other. There are so many different kinds flying about and eating from the feeder and I love watching each and every one of them. I love owls, cardinals and robins are everywhere.

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA discusses that I love to hear the cardinals in my back yard as they “talk” with each other about building their nest, raising their babies, and finding food to eat! Cardinals live in our area year-round, and enjoy feasting on berries from our flowering shrubs or the insects that they catch. The male cardinal has brilliant red feathers, but his mate is better equipped to blend into the foliage where they raise their young.

Linda from LazyYVintage says is it spring yet? Robins are always one of my favorites as they mean the winter is leaving and spring has began. I participate in the winter bird count, where with the Audubon Society you take a day to track the birds in your yard or local nature areas. We feed the birds and document the ones we see on that day. Unfortunately, Robins are not on our list as they migrate and will only be back in the spring.

We have had some hot days in Melbourne, Australia recently. In fact so hot (mid-30’s in ºCelcius) that we missed the sounds of the birds some days. They must have temporarily found a cooler and shadier place to hide from the sun and heat.

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery says I am a bird lover, bird watcher, and bird feeder! In my previous career I work in animal welfare, so I am well aware of the sad state of affairs for captive birds. This includes birds in the pet industry and birds in the food industry.

I made this brooch (and her companions) to bring attention to the lives of battery hens who are used and abused in the egg industry. It may seem counter intuitive to make a beautiful piece of jewelry about a subject like this. However, it is different and eye-catching; and I’ve always found that people are more willing to listen about an issue if you approach the subject nicely. You can definitely speak out for the birds with my Hen brooch!

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations says we are bird lovers and are fortunate to have swallows come back to our yard and nest every summer. They make multiple nests underneath our deck and we get to see their babies. It’s a nice close up of nature.

This quilt is a celebration of all animals and includes special rows of birds, butterflies and ladybugs, along with different birds in trees surrounded by the animal kingdom.

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt states that I love birds … and we have a couple of owl plaques in our shop!

I live in an area that’s rich with birds … and many species migrate through our area …

In fact, every year St. Bernard Parish hosts an annual bird festival in the spring … Artists & artisans, such as ourselves, show their finished works as well as demonstrating their various techniques …

At the bird festival, the LA Audubon Society capture, tag & release birds to gather info on their migration patterns … this is my favorite part of the festival because I get to help release the birds and watch them fly off!

Bislet from MerryXmasfromSweden wishes everyone a Happy Bird Day!

My favorite bird is the bullfinch. I even have a bullfinch picture on my mailbox! Bullfinches are extremely shy birds so it can take years until I see them in the garden. On very harsh winter days I might find them at my garden feeders.

Then I am happy for many days!

Did you know that the bullfinch has a special food sac? They have developed special food sacs which are positioned in the floor of the mouth, allowing the parents to bring back food to their chicks.

They are the only species of finch to have such sacs. Amazing birds!

Enjoy my Christmas table cloth showing bullfinches eating rowan berries so that you can admire them!

Natural And Neutral

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Natural and neutral are trending this year in home decor and so much more…
Do you have something that has neutral or natural elements in it?

These could be wood, cement, neutral color palette, stones and more.

Melissa R from missy69 says I love natural items. I love wood, especially. I recently have been teaching myself the art of Pyrography or wood burning. It is a very relaxing art. These wood slices came from a tree that had to be cut down for removal. I hand drew the dragonflies, onto the slices. I don’t use stencils, or tracings. Then I wood burned the image onto the wood, and used glow in the dark paint to add some interest, and color to the pieces.

Linda Yunker from LazyYCrochet said this hat and scarf set is made using 100% worsted superwashed Merino wool in butternut and chocolate brown. The pattern is an Irish-inspired design that I use in a lot of my scarves and shawls.

The yarn is wonderful to work with it, you almost hate for the project to end. It is wonderful to wear; getting softer with each washing. There is a yarn shop that I have to travel to, Wool & Co. in St. Charles, IL, that stocks this yarn. Mostly I use it for projects that are gifts. But once in awhile, I have used it for some of the Lazy Y’s stock.

I love to crochet and find time daily to do a little or a lot of it. I have a spot on the corner of the couch, all my bags of yarn projects close by. I like to sit just a moment and look at them. What do I feel like completing? Starting? Or moving along in the process. Then I pick it up and start. I really believe that there are health benefits in the crocheting/knitting process. A focus for the brain, calming of the blood pressure and stress of the day, eye/brain coordination, and the contentment of just feeling that great natural yarn and seeing it become a useful, everyday piece or accessory.

As far as neutral? The colors bring forth beauty in subtle ways. The tones are perfect to accessorize and enhance so many colors and winter coats.

Valerie Brown from FirepanJewellery states that brown and tan tones are definitely neutrals, and tiger’s eye is a natural gemstone! My friend Jody made the lovely flamework glass beads, and I was lucky enough to acquire them! I kept them in my ‘stash’ of gemstones and beads until I realized the tiger’s eye went so well with them. They make a nice warm toned necklace.

I bought it for myself, kept it boxed and never used it or gave it as a gift. Here it is for Etsy. I love supporting Amish people and respect their hard work.

Connie Lee from Bungalow42 says these dangle earrings feature Cat’s Eye shells with small seashells and coconut beads hand knotted on waxed Irish linen thread in a neutral walnut color.

Cat’s Eye shell is a natural biological curio considered by some to be a magical charm. Because of its unique and eye-like appearance it is thought to be particularly effective in warding off the Evil Eye. I was drawn to them because of the opposite side of the shell which has a lovely spiral.

These earrings are one of a kind as each Cat’s Eye shell is unique.
