What a grand holiday Valentine’s Day can be — especially when it’s a chance to express yourself to a dear one (or secret beloved)! How do you express yourself on this special day? Here’s what our CIJ teamies do —

Lelia Valois from ValoisFelts said:

My Valentine is usually my dog (who gives great cuddles and makes me laugh so very happy with that), but I love making soppy romantic felts knowing people give them to their loved ones.

Right now I’m working on some zombie Valentine themed felts (for the awesome geeky couples) but for fellow readers I have this sweet bookmark –

I especially love the little cards given in school. It’s such a simple way to show you care. It’s also a way to start the tradition for kids to express love to others.

Valentine’s Day

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Valentine’s Day is all about love, lovers, cards and so much more…

Here at Christmas in July we want to know what offerings you have to Cupid and a little about the item.

Roses Workshop from RosesWorkshop  says I love roses, but they don’t bloom naturally in February in the UK. I have created one that will last all year long, and packaged it in a perfect little heart-shaped gift box.

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio  said To me, chocolate is a big part of Valentine’s day. It’s a must-have all year long, every day!! (in my dreams). Dangle a good piece of chocolate in front of me and I have been known to change my mind.

Lia Russo from Ghirlandiamo discusses how On Valentine’s Day people generally buy gifts or flowers: that’s very nice, but l think there are also other ways to celebrate this romantic day.

l prepared these tiny wreaths with hearts thinking of an intimate romantic dinner and a smart table set with little, particular accents, like napkin holders.

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says I love to remember my daughter when she still went to elementary school and each child brought little Valentines for the classroom Valentine party. I always made mini cards and then my daughter would sit at the table and write the names of her classmates on the cards. She was so concentrated on the job, the tip of her tongue wandered from one corner of her mouth to the other. She was happy when she was done and hadn’t messed up.

Melissa R from missy69 says I am still very new to wood burning, but I wanted to make a few things for Valentines Day. This is just a simple wooden picture block, with Calla Lilies, Roses, and hearts wood burned to the block. There is a spot for personalizing, too.

Wendy CN from CardNotions discusses that this is a humorous Valentine’s Day card inspired by a Fushia and Chartruse sea anemone photo I took years ago. Just a little Photoshopping created a lovely anemone heart for the front of the card! (Did you notice the little hermit crab in the front photo?)

Next, I thought about how other sea creatures might say “I Love You”. Surely, they would need to spell it out with their bodies. So, when the card is opened, a jelly fish in the shape of an “I”, an octopus holding a red heart, and an eel in the shape of an “U” pop forth in bright colors to say “I love you”.

Mandi Leighs from leighswiccanboutique says Love is in the air and valentines day is just around the corner fast approaching. Why not go out of the normal and get her something that not only smells fantastic but is equally beautiful as well. This candle holder was created from found materials to create this unique piece adorn with crystal Quartz, Emerald, Black Onyx and Agate. Filled with a unique of Dragons Blood and Wine. The best part is once this candle is gone the holder is reusable with your favorite tealights or votive candles. A gift that can be used over and over again.

Woolly Momo from WoollyMomo  states that I think giving your loved one the gift of warmth and comfort is once of the nicest things you can give them.

Valentine’s Day is always so cold here in London and so, in keeping with the red theme of Valentine’s Day, I knit this lovely red hat in a soft and cozy wool to keep a lover warm as the go out and about to celebrate with their much loved other half!

Cupid Has Us ‘Struck in Love’

Contributor post by Alexandra from EyeLoveKnots

EYE_2016_01_CupidStruckByLove2

For as long as I can remember, Cupid has been an iconic part of my Valentine’s celebrations as Santa Claus has been an iconic part of my Christmas celebration. There are many other love-gods such as Juno Februata, and Eros as well as Saint Valentine. I reached out to my fellow Christmas in July team members to see how they celebrate and what kinds of traditions were out there.

Wendy from CardNotions shared this Pop Up Valentine Card with Cupids.

She says, “I loved growing up with the tradition of sharing those little die-cut Valentines Day cards with classmates. A few days before, the art project in every classroom would be to decorate a shoe box with everything Valentines – hearts, lace, etc – with a slot in the top to receive cards. We then would exchange silly cards that we spent hours picking out and even longer deciding the appropriate message to send each recipient. It was a pretty subtle way to let someone know that you had a crush on them… or not… since all of the cards we basically cute and silly with a similar message. I loved that it allowed everyone to connect, laugh and share.
With that in mind, I decided to create a pop-up card that was cute and silly with a couple of cupids and subtle message of love.
“Please by my Valentine!” request is on the front of the card, which becomes much more persuasive when the card opens to two cupids shooting arrows into a large pop-up heart. Hidden inside the heart you will see one arrow has found its mark and the words, “…a little cupid persuasion…” Maybe a little darker humor than you might expect to find in the Valentine’s shoe boxes.”

Richard and Tatiana from DesignsTheLimit shared this Personalized ‘Struck by Love’ Picture Frame.

They say, “We love to study the history of ancient Greece and Rome with a great fascination for the polytheistic religions of the ancient world. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we introduced this ‘Struck by Love’ Picture Frame which also makes a great wedding, anniversary or birthday gift for your significant other.
Although not as popular as the other custom picture frames in our portfolio, the story of Cupid is one of our favorites and we were happy to see it persevere into the modern age. We are happy to post this listing all year long for anyone who is struck by Cupid’s arrow. We also have several other Valentine’s Day picture frame designs and will be accepting orders right up until the last minute!”

Have you been struck by one of those arrows? Do you have any projects you’ve designed inspired by Cupid, Valentine’s Day or Love in general? We would love to see them and hear YOUR story!

Valentine’s Day “Sweet” Treats

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

Valentine’s Day is almost upon us and what does one think of but sweet decadent treats. Chocolate, flowers, romance, hearts and dinner for two!

I asked CIJ team members to show me their treats!

Elizabeth Welburn of ElizabethLovesGlass told me:

I think paper ephemera would be considered a true “vintage collectible”.
These cards are from the 1960’s and have Hallmark Canada markings on the back.
I found them in my grandmother’s belongings – she actually had a lot of unused cards and I guess she picked them up “just in case.”
The cards are fairly heavy paper. In my mind, the strangest one is a Valentine’s ‘wallet’. It’s intended to hold cash. I would not think to give money on Valentine’s day, but hey, you could put a handmade gift certificate in this wallet if you wanted. And the design is very pretty and retro.

Myrna Neal of ShopOfCraftsByMyrna says:

I love hearts. That is and has always been an expression of love. I make hearts and send them anywhere from anyone with a message that they want to send…..or….I send the heart to the person and they give or send the heart themselves. Love is in the air!

Marjorie Scenna of mscenna states:

I love vintage and holiday inspired vintage items are wonderful and make great gifts for any occasion! These Valentine inspired earrings were created from a mix of vintage beads that I received from a friend. The glass roses reminded me of Valentine’s Day and then when I discovered the silver hearts, I thought they made a perfect pairing! Vintage Valentine’s Day with a new touch!

il_170x135.429031883_izr6

Kristen Sargent of KestrelCollection explains:

I wanted to provide an affordable but totally awesome gift ready to give so I created the Valentine Everlasting Rose Earrings. I will ship each order with chocolate, a card and gift wrap it all so Valentines’ Day can be special and not stressful.

il_170x135.712328448_bs12

Ifigeneia tsiltikli of fifirixtra told me:

This is a costume vintage item that i specially made for my Aikido teacher!
He has a lovely family with 2 girls very elegant! I wanted to make something for him that he could put it at his home and i got it! i think the lace with the tulle made it really vintage and the off white felt colored it with cocoa to give a more vintage result!

il_170x135.707154155_gcio

Adonis Lewis of jewelrybyadonis let me know:

My inspirations are these sweet soft pastel hearts. They’re so quietly stated with beauty. I wanted to do something special with them and show them off. So I created this wire wrapped bracelet in pink and gold. They are perfect for a Valentine sweetheart.

Noel of MinkCouture said:

I love participating in A Month of Letters-every day in February, write a letter and mail one and get some mail back in return. This pin was inspired by that and the notion of love letters. Made from an old sweater, some vintage die cuts and images from a vintage postcard, this sweet little pin reminds us all that we wish out letters had wings to get to our loved ones faster!

il_170x135.709702407_stdg

Lia Russo of Ghirlandiamo states:

For me Valentine’s Day = heart, so when I saw that heart shape basis, I immediately imagined to put on it some other little ones, of different natural materials (wicker, bark, wood, cotton).

A so romantic and sweet item!

il_170x135.535371176_g24b

Valerie Brown of FirepanJewellery says:

I love red, and I love Valentine’s day! When I saw the gorgeous reds that you can have in enamel, I knew I had to make hearts! I wanted a different take on the traditional heart, though, so I designed a heart that is a little off center and funky. The heart pendants are sweet because they are one of a kind, so you are giving a very individual gift to your sweetheart.

il_170x135.552043442_kwq9

Wendy WN of WoodNotions tells me:

I dressed up my little heart ornaments with rose pink ribbon to say “I give my heart to you!”
The lacy heart was inspired by a stained glass design. Combining the two classic designs, somehow created a fresh and cheerful look.

il_170x135.609513216_ijod

Arlene of ThisandThatCrafter explains:

Here is a supply I sell… My inspiration is the challenge any ribbon has in getting a creative picture of that ribbon. Any ribbon is a challenge to get a creative picture of so I decided to take the ribbon and write a word. Since this is pink ribbon and Valentines is just around the corner I decided on the word Love. Love is a sweet word for the Valentine Holiday Season….

il_170x135.712885220_78mj

Utary of Oyeta stated:

I love roses and red roses always reminds me of valentine days. Lately I’ve been so in love with vampire love story and this red roses in black clutch I create represent the darkness, the forbidden love, the broken heart and all that sad times when we love someone. il_170x135.710405953_k6g4

Sue and Misty of shabbyshopgirls explained:

We love vintage hankies, so every year my mom, sister and I exchange a vintage Valentine hankie with each other! It’s made for a wonderful tradition to show how much we appreciate each other and family!

il_170x135.711159503_rcdm
