Bunnies, Chicks And Lambs

Contributor Post by Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

Bunnies, Chicks And Lambs

This speaks to my heart – what a furry, soft, cute, pastels and egg hunts and farms and grandparents kind of topic.. my mother had bunnies galore on our little farm. When I was in kindergarten, our class would walk over to our front yard, the kids would sit in a circle and my mom would let oodles of bunnies go, hopping to happy squealing children.

How does this springtime topic make you feel, what items in your shop relate to this theme – and when is the last time you’ve petted a soft and cuddly baby animal? We’d love to see your accompanying items and hear your stories.

I love your story Opal!

I bet those school children will remember that “bunny encounter” forever!

These are a couple of kitschy chicks that my daughter and I found at an antique shop. We love their sticker eyes and yellow feather details.

I love this!! Thank you Opal for organizing!

I thought I would share my shops whimsical wine cork Easter bunny ornaments too! Spring time always reminds me of my grandma. Each Easter she would lend me one of her old Sunday hats and we would have brunch in our sunny spring dresses and Easter egg hunts down at the farm! Lots of smiles and laughter come to mind as the birdies are out chirping and the tulips come into bloom.

Cheers from Corky Friendz

Spring is my favorite time of year! Bring on the bunnies, ducklings, little lambs and especially, the Easter chicks!! Their serious expressions make me think they have a lot on their little chicken minds! When my kids were small, we had a chick that peeped when you held it. Fun for the kids, not so fun on a 13 hour car ride home from Grandma’s house when you can hear the tiny chick — but you cannot find anywhere! ( And we pulled over several times to look!) PEEP, PEEP, PEEP all the way home!!

I love the little spring lambs, but I really want to see them grow up and become sheep that eventually will supply us with beautiful yarn (I’m a knitter). These two sheep that simply stole my heart by just standing there and looking at me live in the English countryside in the beautiful Cotswolds where I think they have a good life. Wouldn’t this be a lovely spring greeting?

When we had little nieces and nephews we would hold a huge Easter egg hunt out at the farm and hide dozens of plastic eggs. All the siblings would come with their kids and we’d meet at church then afterwards our house and kids would hunt and the entire family would enjoy Easter Ham for lunch.

Here is one of the Easter baskets for sale in our shop. My wife embroidered the chicks for the liner.

I love the pastels and the new going to church clothes for Easter Sunday. I love the sweets and bake some petit fours and small cakes for brunch. But mostly, with everyone all cleaned up (and they clean up nicely) and dressed up, we make quite the picture of spring in Illinois. Of course, that only last long enough to take some pictures as the kids run to find hidden eggs and the adults take off ties and kick off shoes!

I was blessed to grow up on a farm in Iowa with a very crafty and fun loving Mom and Dad! We usually dyed our Easter eggs Saturday night watching and dancing to Lawrence Welk. Then Mom would wind our straight hair onto bristly curlers and we tried to sleep with constant pricking giving us headaches all night! We’d jump up at the crack of dawn to eat breakfast, then we searched for our Easter baskets filled with jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and special surprises. We’d get a jump rope or book or toy we wanted. The little craft/chef/tool aprons I sell were my Mom’s inspiration and they would make a great Easter gift for the littles in your life!

Tell us about yourself.

We are a couple that loves creating and exploring new things. Most of our inspiration comes from nature: Wild forests, beaches, rivers, ancient myths and magic. We love spending time and creating together.w1

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

We opened our shop just half a year ago, in 2016 June. Opening a shop was a bit of a challenge for us, because we do not like to put value on our creations.  There were quite few little things made that needed new home, and we thought that someone in the world would enjoy having them. It gives us joy to know that our little creations travel all around and reaches  countries such Australia, New Zealand, Canada, America. Maybe one day we could visit all these beautiful countries, but for now, we send a little piece of our hearts with our creations.w2

Tell us a bit about your products.

We use different techniques and materials to make our products. Most of our goods are collected from sandy beaches of Baltic sea, deep and dark forests in Lithuania, or recycled from other things to give them second life.

Items we make are unique and there will be no same item in the world, our shop is small and it is because we do not make huge amount of things. Each little piece first created in head, then drafted on paper and finally made by hands using lots of love and skills, such as pyrography, carving wood, engraving stone, leather working, flint knapping and more.w3

What inspires your work?

We get inspired from many things, but mostly – nature and the magical world around us.w4

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

Our future goals for new year is to find little bit more time for creating more unique items, also to set up our little work shop where we could keep our tools and create freely. The dream for our business is to keep making unique things that other people like and send them all around the world. We do not care about quantity, quality is our priority.w5

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

We never make same item again. All of them are unique and has a little touch of magic in them.w6

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

For now we work in home, sometimes our creations born in the beach during holidays, or in the forest when we go for a walk, but in spring we are going to set up separate work space in the store house, where we could keep all our tools, materials and create comfortably.w7

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

We enjoyed learning new things during the process of shop creation and developing, so we can’t say that we wanted to know everything before we started.

We learned how amazing and good feeling overflows you when your little creation finds new home, and the person who bought it is happy.w8

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

To put lots of heart in your work, and do not let others to stop you in any way.w9

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

We love riding bikes, traveling, swimming, drawing, reading, creating and many more things that makes us happy.w10

What are your favorite quotes?

Imagination is more important than knowledge – Albert Einstein

The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them – Paulo Coelhow11

Tell us about yourself.

I opened my shop on Etsy in 2014 to help pay for new construction of a barn.  We offer toys from the 1970’s and home decor and vintage art too!

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

If you grew up in the late 1960’s and 1970’s  a fond memory you may recall will arrive as you enter our shop.    They don’t make toys like these anymore so my loss is your gain. As they say you can’t take it with you.   You may just find a memory from your childhood or a rare find to add to your collection.  We hope our items will bring back many memories.

Tell us a bit about your products.

If you remember growing up in  the 1970’s, you may recall a television show Battlestar Galactica, remember how guest stars would appear and then poof they were gone.   In the 13” action figures Colonial Warrior had never appeared in the show he was like the guest star that you knew he would be eventually killed by Cylons or killed in action.t3

What inspires your work?

We enjoy the stories we receive on how people find our shop and their memories of particular items for sale in our shop.

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

This business is a hobby of ours, we’ve enjoyed the stories we have received when a customer finds something they recall from childhood.  Recently one of our clients purchased a toy to use in a vintage bedroom for a short film which was really cool.

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

We offer items that are rare and one of a kind.  We hope to spread smiles & many happy memories when they find something to remind them of fun times as a kid and bring out their inner childhood memories to others.

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

How nice people are on Etsy.  I use to be on Ebay and it was horrible.t1

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Do it! You’ll make many friends!!! I’ve met many vintage sellers on Etsy and also made many new friends.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I work full-time so my hobbies at the moment are on the back burner.

What is your favorite quote?

Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday. ~John Wayne

Secret Pal or Secret Santa Gift Ideas

Contributor post by Opal from Apron Strings Owl Lady

They are used as a fun way to honor co-workers, to surprise other’s at holidays, birthdays and other events – even secretly sent in the mail – have you ever participated in a secret pal gift give-a-way?

Most are conducted by just leaving the gift on the person’s desk or workplace. Some of my friends call these Amigo Secreto (secret friend) or Amigo Invisible (invisible friend). What is this called in your country?

With Etsy, it’d be very simple to send secret gifts to special people in our lives. Thank you Alicia of AliciasFindings for thinking of this topic. Do you have items in your shop that would be perfect for this type of small gift giving? We’d love to see them and hear your story.

We each chose a slip (keeping it secret of course!) then bought a gift with a value up to $20 for our special colleague. All the pressies went into the Santa Sack and were given out at our Christmas Party. The Banksia Bomb was especially created with affordable festive giving in mind 🙂

I love Secret Santa! Its a tradition i have been part of since my days in grad school. In school we were on a limited budget, so most of the presents were handmade, which was even more amazing! One of the gifts i received was a handmade Ganesha statue , another time i got a pencil sketch (which was super cool!). at work the budget was higher so that meant store bought presents like scented candles or mugs.

A really cool Secret Santa present would be this handmade custom pet portrait for that colleague or friend who loves his/ her pet!

Secret Santa brings back many fun memories of grammar school. Our teacher would ask us to bring ornaments into school handmade and give them to her in a brown lunch bag and she would distribute to students by hiding them in your locker or in your desk while you were at lunch or recess, which means you never know who got your ornament until they opened it. Secret was you couldn’t tell who got yours or who had you unless somebody squealed. One year in 4th grade I got a handmade wood bell ornament and many decades later its still displayed on my tree.

This would make a great Secret Santa gift for work or school or even for your child’s teacher.

I loved being apart of the Secret Santa type parties they were so much fun!!!. As the bag was being passed around for you to choose a name you could tell everyone was hoping somebody who was a great gift giver pulled their name. So, I think getting something the person has listed on their wish list would be a pleasant surprise especially if this were there only gift.

The Story Behind Your Etsy Shop Name

Guest post by Alexandra of EyeLoveKnots

When I decided to open a shop and start my blog, I knew I wanted to raise awareness for Retinoblastoma, an aggressive cancer of the retina (in the eye) that has affected a few members of my family so to incorporate it, I came up with EyeLoveKnots. I don’t have many eye related or inspired items, but I do have a number of children’s items created for my little cousin’s affected by this cancer.

Members of the Etsy Christmas In July team share the stories behind their shop names below! Enjoy!

Edna from AddaSplashofColour says:

I grew up with my Aunt who battled depression and I’ve lost family members to depression. There was a brief moment in my life when I was spiraling towards depression. It was after my husband’s brain surgery to remove a tumour. I had to quit my job in order to take care of him and my son which affected my confidence. So when I opened my shop I wanted to create colourful items that inject energy. Adding tastefully designed colourful items can be a great mood lifter. Especially in winter when is it is gloomy and grey here in Melbourne. Imagine how nice it would be to come home and find a room that is inviting.

Delano is a family name and when I was having trouble thinking of what to call my business my daughter suggested Delano Designs. The Delano part of the family was very creative so it seemed like a great way to honor my family and I like how it sounds. Here is one of my newer blankets.

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA says:

Hi, I’m Sharon from MsPDesignsUSA! My sister, Susan, and I design whimsical and unique quilt patterns

Our shop name came from our maiden name “Passmore”, along with the nickname that my brother-in-law used for my sister, “Ms P”. When we decided to pursue our dream of having a quilt pattern design business, we added the word “Designs” to her nickname, and then “USA” to the end of our name.

Emma and Ivan from treadandpedals says:

When we first started out our business name was Ivy & Em (our nicknames). We make jewelry, home wares and accessories through re-purposing old bicycle parts into fun and functional designs – we’re also (as you’ve probably already guessed) slightly obsessed with bicycles.

As our business grew we felt we needed to have something that reflected our brand, the products we make and our story a little more… we decided on Tread & Pedals.

We use the tread of bicycle tyres to make our belts and we pedal our wares – we also make wheelie cool clocks (and love puns, especially cycling related).

Michelle Emma Kay from EmmaKayInks says:

Emma Kay is actually my middle name. The Kay comes from my Aunty – it is also her middle name. My mum gave it to me when I was born.

I chose the Emma part. I chose it when I was 8 years old. My step dad was adopting me legally. Mum asked me if I wanted to change anything about my name, since we were going through all the paper work anyway. I asked to add Emma.

Singer-songwriter Bon Iver made an album called ‘For Emma, Forever Ago‘. I heard it for the first time on a friend’s old Toyota’s car stereo during a road trip from Sydney to Canberra during autumn – clear blue skies, multi-coloured leaves, a chance to get to know one another better.

I’ve listened to the album many times since then, but could barely tell you what the lyrics are. I listen to the melodies and the slow rhythms. Its an album I put on when I need to sooth myself.

One of the songs on the album is called ‘For Emma’. Bon Iver has described Emma as “an elusive subject… Emma is a statement, a sentiment and a closing of my own history.”

He elaborated further in another interview: “Emma isn’t a person…Emma is a place that you get stuck in. Emma’s a pain that you can’t erase.”

His words resonate with me. I agree that Emma is a feeling. But Emma to me is not pain so much as sentiment. Longing and loss. A moment from childhood that flashes through your mind before you can catch it all.

I don’t want to erase Emma. I want to keep it. Hold it close. I want to curl up with it on the lounge while I gaze out of the window and reflect on days past.

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit says:

We developed our concept before we chose a name for our business and when it came to choosing our name it was difficult. When you specialize in offering designs and accepting custom orders for inspired designs, we needed a name which described the concept of our endeavor. Combining The Sky is the Limit with Graphic Design Artwork, Design’s the Limit was born. We couldn’t find any other businesses with our name, so we purchased the domain and registered a trademark for our business. We welcome custom design requests and as we say, “We can design for any ideas you have in mind!”

My animal rescue is called Castawayacres that is what I named my shop to start out with. As I use a lot of my profits from the shop to help buy food and pay vet bills on the animals I rescue.

I have a few months back changed the name to VintageCastaways to give it more of a feel for what I sell.

That is how I became VintageCastaways.

I have an antique booth that I started out with first, so I really didn’t have a name for it.

I decided I wanted to go online and really try this avenue and make it a success.

My husband came up with my shop name. He used my name and said since I search out items for my shop then I am selecting vintage items and salvaging them from garage sales, estate sales, and others.

I really like it and the alliteration, he loves alliterations so go figure.

Lisajoy Sachs from saxdsign says:

This is going to totally sound corny compared to all your stories, because all of you have put such important meaning into your shop names, and mine was sort of an accident.

My legal business name has been Sachs Design since 1999 – hence my last name is Sachs (pronounced SAX) I really wanted to get vanity tags for my car one year with my business name on them but I couldn’t fit all the letters so I figured out that I could do:

SAX D SIGN

and squished them all together – and there ya go – it evolved into Saxdsign

I have since moved (13 years ago) and those old tags had to be turned in. Maryland doesn’t offer that many spaces on their plates so I have different tags now, but kept SAXDSIGN as a brand now.

See not very exciting!

Small Wonders – Tiny Items

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

There is a growing trend of fairy gardens and also doll houses seem to be making a comeback. Because of this small items or miniatures are in popular demand!

Here at Christmas in July we want to know what items do you have that reflect the theme?

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit states even the Tooth Fairy needs a little help from time to time. One of the first items we ever listed on Etsy was our Personalized Tooth Fairy boxes and they are still one of our favorite products.

We have three toothbox designs and have a wide selection of fonts to choose from to make each toothbox a personalized keepsake. We also include a velvet gift pouch which is great for looping over a stuffed animals arm. We feel a special sort of spiritual fulfillment in making our toothboxes to order and being a part of childhood memories around the world!

toysfrom70s from toysfrom70s said this couple of kissing mice resin figurines came from Booger Hollow, AR. Yes I said it correctly the place was a tourist attraction in Pope County, Arkansas, middle of nowhere turn left back in the 1970s. My dad and I stopped there at the bait shop on our way fishing one time. The mice are an inch tall, resin and painted would make a great addition to a shadow box or miniature scene or even on a cake!

One of those little roadside stops off the beaten path on the road. If you collect unusual and cute items this would make a great addition.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage discussed that this is a vintage Hagen-Renaker penguin.

We think he’d be perfect in a winter themed fairy garden or posed next to an igloo made of sugar cubes!

Lots of decorating possibilities!

Nautico Creations from NauticoCreations said I love this plant arrangement because it features different textures and sizes of plants and flowers. The main thing that I love, though is the miniature little mushroom. It makes it very cheery and one can just imagine a little fairy hiding behind the plants.

Lisajoy Sachs from saxdsign discusses these Tiny little fossilized shark teeth are found by me on a local beach right here in Maryland – they are perfect for making stacking rings, and are about 65 Million years old!!! They are so tiny you must have really great vision to even see them. This one is a Tiger Shark tooth.
