I’m Scottish but currently live in Prague, Czech Republic, where I teach English and make stained glass items for the home, like mirrors and suncatchers, and glass jewelery. I’ve recently fell in love with sea glass collecting and have been making jewelery with the pieces gifted to me by the Mediterranean Sea. It’s all about glass with me, be it Tiffany, Mackintosh, Czech beads or sea gems, you’ll find lots of glassy treasures in my shop.

What is your favorite leadership quote?

“If at first you don’t succeed try, try and try again.” Robert the Bruce, king of Scotland, 1314. Said to have been inspired by a humble spider stoically weaving his web as Bruce hid from his English pursuers in a cave.

What leader in your life has most influenced you?

This person wasn’t present in my life but my journey has traveled, a little, in his footsteps and I’ve been inspired by his style. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish artist and architect, who had a professional influence on the development of the Modern movement. As well as structural designs, he integrated his ideas throughout by also designing the interior, furniture and textiles.
My first job was working in a stained glass studio, where we made Mackintosh style home decor. I then went on to Art School and studied silversmith and jewelry design in the building that Mackintosh had designed a hundred years before. I have since worked in retail and a graphic design/print studio and have now gone full circle by making more Mackintosh style home decor.

What is your greatest leadership skill and how did you attain it?

Through teaching English as a second language to learners of all ages, I have helped others to better communicate in our language. With guidance and patience, I lead them to be confident in using it, to not worry about mistakes but help eliminate them and to never give up.

What leadership skill do you want to achieve and how will you attain it?

I hope to encourage others to recognize and utilize their talents so that they can be proud of their achievements whether it be small steps of improvement or giant leaps of success.

Tell us about yourself and your shop.

I reside in Springfield, Illinois where I grew up. Today I am retired, married and a grandmother. I love color and my shop presents it in the things I made whether it is jewelry or knitting items. I have been knitting since I was a little girl and jewelry came along around the time I set up my Etsy shop back in 2012. At that time I was doing Kumihimo, we have now gone to other things which are of more interest.

What is your favorite leadership quote?

“Your talent is God’s gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.”
Leo Buscaglia

What leader in your life has most influenced you?

My leader/leaders that have most influenced me would be my parents. They always emphasized to get out and work hard and to do your very best and that is what I try to do, my very best. And if I didn’t get it I would have to figure it out.

What is your greatest leadership skill and how did you attain it?

Well, I have been on Boards before as a Secretary taking notes. It is a great skill to pay close attention and catch everything they are saying and come back next week and read the minutes. I was told I took excellent minutes. So I guess that would be my skill.

What leadership skill do you want to achieve and how will you attain it?

On this team it would have to be the Blog as I am very unfamiliar with a Blog. That would be the leadership skill I would have the most challenge with, I believe.

Tell us about yourself and your shop.

I have been heavily influenced by the artists in my family. The poets, writers, potters, painters, dancers and musicians from my past have made a mark on my creative process. I am also a bit of a vagabond, and my husband and I have passed that trait on to our daughters. We consider it remarkable when we have lived in one city for more than 4 years.

I am the ‘mother’ of the mother-daughter team that is Stock Lane Studio. Our cards and prints are partly inspired by the roles we play in our day-today lives. My days as a teacher and worn out young mother needing sleep prompted me to design our ‘quiet’ signs My daughters are older now and soon both will be off in college so we have affordable and inspiring word and photo art that make great dorm and apartment decor. One of my daughters is the artist behind our quirky cards and some watercolor art. All three of us are inspired by our travels, which has resulted in great photography and photo cards.

What is your favorite leadership quote?

One of my favorite authors, Maya Angelou is the source for these 2 quotes that I think relate to the creative souls selling on Etsy:

“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off of you.”
– – – – – – – – – – – –
“Ask for what you want and be prepared to get it!”

What leader in your life has most influenced you?

Two leaders have really made an impression on me are my mother and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Both women have shown me the importance of a good education, how to listen and think and then choose my words wisely, how to admit to your mistakes and learn from them and to constantly strive to improve the lives of those around me.

What is your greatest leadership skill and how did you attain it?

•Organization: A a single working mother of 7, my mother was super organized and I’ve carried that with me into adulthood, in parenting my own children and with my business. I am still no where near as organized as my mom though and have not yet reached her advanced level of labeling and ordering everything.

•Communication: In a past life I used to be a pretty decent teacher. Throughout the years I have taught a variety of subjects to a variety of age level and nationalities. This has really helped me learn how to communicate.

What leadership skill do you want to achieve and how will you attain it?

I hope to develop greater personal and business confidence and improve my ability to work well with others by interacting with and working with #EtsyCIJ team members. I’m a mild introvert and I like to accomplish things on my own, but a leader doesn’t do everything on her own. I hope to improve my cooperative skills and learn to work better with others (ha!). Leaders need to be able to listen to others, communicate and delegate effectively and have the confidence to implement the right decisions on behalf of the team.

Tell us about yourself and your shop.

I reside in VA. and and am an office manager, wife, and mother. I eat and breathe crafts. My shop was originally created at the suggestion of some friends. I am constantly making new things and showing them off.

What is your favorite leadership quote?

Ultimately leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others’ success, and then standing back and letting them shine.

What leader in your life has most influenced you?

I think the one leader who influenced me the most was a previous manager I had as I was working my way up the ladder to be an office manager myself. In fact, she was the manager just prior to my current job. She always treated her employees with respect, gratitude, understanding and patience.

What is your greatest leadership skill and how did you attain it?

Leadership is all about finding ways for people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together. My goal is to unlock people’s potential to become better.

What leadership skill do you want to achieve and how will you attain it?

A leader needs to be able to think outside of the box and harness creative thinking. Sometimes nontraditional solutions or approaching problems in nontraditional ways, can solve an otherwise unsolvable problem.

Tell us about yourself and your shop.

I am an outgoing crafty woman who loves family, friends, nature and reading most of all. I think some of this shows up in my jewelry. My jewelry shop is a mix of trends, my own ideas/patterns as well as others. I have a fondness for mixed media, kumihimo and metal work.

What is your favorite leadership quote?

A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and and shows the way.

What leader in your life has most influenced you?

I guess that would be my mother. I’ve seen her work ethic and how she leads by example. I do think there are many great leaders out there like; Abraham Lincoln, Ben Franklin, Gandhi and more.

What is your greatest leadership skill and how did you attain it?

I think that would be motivation. I feel if you show others you’re behind them, almost anything can happen.

What leadership skill do you want to achieve and how will you attain it?

The ability to communicate clearer with others. I sometimes feel what I mean to say, gets lost in how I say it.

Leadership Spotlight – TheMarchingBee

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

Leaders are an essential part of any team or organization. Leaders help other members succeed and grow as well as help the Captain achieve their objectives. Here at Christmas in July we have some wonderful Leaders and we want to honor your accomplishments in what we are calling Leadership Spotlight.

Carrie from TheMarchingBee is our next honoree!

1. What made you decide to join the CIJ team and what do you love about the team?

Honestly, I don’t really remember exactly. I believe that I was searching the groups and stumbled across it. All I remember is that it didn’t take long for me to love the idea of it. Everything is just so organized and alive. That’s really what I love about the group. It’s not dead and drab, but fun and alive.

2. What made you decide to become a CIJ team leader and what do you enjoy most about being a team leader?

I was approached by the captain and was honored. She noticed I retweeted a lot and asked if I was interested in being a leader. It took a little while to get my ducks in a row, but I’m happy to help. I enjoy seeing progress. If I see any improvement in retweets and sales to others, that makes me happy. It makes me feel like I’m paying it forward.

3. What is your style of leadership?

I’ve never been super strict on any leadership role I’ve had, but I do expect everyone to give something. I know that it’s not always easy, or possible, when you manage a large group of people such as Etsy groups, but I am always encouraging. The more I get wrapped up in my leadership roles and projects, the more I encourage others to do the same. I try to do a lot of one-on-one. I find that it works best when you create a bond with your members, not to mention you make new friends along the way.

4. Tell us about yourself and your shop.

I am a happily married mommy from the country in West Virginia USA. I love to read, write, blog, and do pretty much anything that has to do with words in general, including talking. I enjoy crocheting, which is why I opened my shop Little Cotton Tail back in… 2010 I think? It quickly was changed to Stitchy Little Witch and stuck for quite a few years. Then, in 2016, I decided it was time for a revamp. I needed a name that said less “Halloween” and more “kids” because my shop is now mainly for babies and children. My son came up with the name The Marching Bee, and I couldn’t have been happier with it since I love honeybees and was in Marching Band in high school. I used to take a lot of custom orders, but I have decided that life is too short and that my son needed more attention, so I mostly sell in-stock now. It seems like a perfect balance now.

5. What are your social media sites?

I am a member of many, many social media sites, but I mainly use Pinterest and Twitter. I am working on my Facebook page more lately as well. I have given up on Instagram for my shop though. Here are my links:
