Handmade Summer – Etsy Christmas in July

Contributor post by Ashley of French Soul Knittery

I love summer. I especially love all of the handmade items that are everywhere this warm and sunny season. There are so many talented artists that create beautiful handmade pieces that are perfect for the summer.

Summer is a perfect time for creativity and inspiration and in honor of the season, our Etsy Christmas in July team share their handmade items that beautifully represent the summer.

Happy Summer Everyone!

Starfish bead bracelet

I can picture wearing this bracelet while on the beach this summer, enjoying the summer breeze and the waves.  From https://www.etsy.com/shop/AliciasFindings

Alicia of AliciasFindings says, “I found these beads at a local store and fell in love! I love beachy things especially sea life, birds, sun, sand etc. This piece embodies all of that to me and I hope whoever buys it feels the same!”

il_170x135.608479300_dn0h

Stephanie from Busy Bella Boutique says, “My daughter needed somewhere to put her bows and headbands instead of in a drawer in her room. It was way too messy, and I could never find the bow I wanted for whatever outfit she was wearing. So, one day I thought I would just make a hair bow holder/organizer myself. So, I gathered supplies and let her pick out the color ribbon she liked, and I even let her help (She is 5, so this was a VERY big deal to her). Finally, after some trial and error, I made her one, and she LOVED it!! She just had to show everyone her new hair bow organizer hanging up in her room. So, I thought, “Why not share it with the world?”

Roselle from Seaside Rose Creations says, “I adore the beach, summer and vintage. These banners are so wonderful for weddings, holidays, events, etc. I love thinking up words and then using various colored ribbons to go with the vintage letter cards I have thrifted. They are so sweet and have a great vibe hanging from the ribbon by little wood clothespins! I take custom orders and am happy to make up any word for these DIY banners.”

Amy from BeadsandThreadsbyAmy says, “I have always disliked heavy jewelry, especially in the summer months, yet I love the look of chunky jewelry. It is so hot here in the summer! Some outfits, however, need a little something extra. So, I created these boho style earrings to wear on those hot summer days. They are feather light, and I chose neutral colors that you can wear with just about anything. Fun and flirty and eye catching, for sure!”

Paula of Bridget’s Collection says, “I am fortunate to live in a warmer climate and a short drive to the beach. When I made this necklace, I thought of a day at the beach enjoying the sun, sand and surf. Then, home for a quick shower, change into a sun dress, and pop on this necklace and earring set before heading out for an al fresco dinner watching the setting sun.”

Brittany of Brittany’s Best says, “I wanted to make rings specifically for a beach wedding. I searched for weeks before finding the perfect color ribbon for these hand-wrapped napkin rings. I love the thought that these rings will match the color of the sea or sky on someone’s most special day. I can envision an all white tabletop with these rings adorning a white napkin and vases with sea shells and floating candles.”

From https://www.etsy.com/shop/AngsanaSeedsPhoto

Angsana of Angsana Seeds Photo says, “When I think of summer, I visualized rolling hills of wildflowers with bright brilliant colors. I am from Singapore and we lack the four seasons. Also, the weather is too hot and humid that we don’t usually see vibrant colorful flowers on the sidewalk. I saw this brilliant orange color Gerbera daisy when I went to the market one day. The color captured my eyes, and it is screaming summer! I’m so glad I bought it home.”

Laura of Chicken Jungle says, “I started sewing with fabric scraps from my aunts when I was a little kid, I like to experiment with many different fabrics, trims, buttons, beads and all kinds of unusual doodads, a little of this, a little of that. Lately I have been making these chicken doorstops. They all have quilted wings and tails that are like mini quilts in themselves. They are hand stitched, as it would be impossible to make the small curved seems on a machine. I make my own pattern for these chickens.”

From https://www.etsy.com/shop/GreenbriarCreations

Sue of Greenbriar Creations says, “They are a unique one of a kind addition to your fairy garden. With a little care and no rogue squirrels (they ate one of my socks!) they could last a couple of years. I’ve recently added some miniature clothes garlands as laundry room decor to the shop too. The best part of making these miniatures is the ability to use up bits and pieces of my stash – whether it be fabric, lace or some of my vintage hankies. My shop is extremely eclectic. I don’t like to work on the same thing over and over. I’m always coming up with something new.”

From https://www.etsy.com/shop/CarolaBartz

Carola from Carola Bartz says, “When I think of summer I often think of the ocean, the beach – and of course sanddollars. Sun, bright colors, carefree days. I love to walk along the beach and look for shells. I especially love sanddollars, they are unique and it’s hard to find whole, unbroken ones. For me they mean something positive and beautiful. This beauty as well as the feeling of carefree light summer days I love to express in unique handmade cards that represent summer – and how thoughtful is it to send this beauty and positive emotion to someone we love and care about? That’s why I make these cards.”

Sherri from Butterfly Feet Digital says, “I love flowers and lady bugs, and summer just happens to be the best time to see both of those! I’ve always loved sunflowers – they are so country and pretty.
I enjoy creating flowers and bugs for digital download items such as these printable greeting card sets. These are in PDF printable format, and one of my goals is to make similar items in jpg format.”

Alexandra from Eye Love Knots says, ” I fell in love with this bag the moment I saw it! I knew I had to create my own. First one made went to my cousin for her birthday. I filled it with a bunch of goodies needed to have a great day at the beach – magazines, sunscreen, beach towel, cooler/lunch bag, Gatorade, snack bars… It was a hit!”

Valerie of Bijoux Elkasa says, “‘m a classic lady when we talk about clothes so I started to do this kind of necklace to light up my little black dress or a classic top. This is my way to be more colorful 🙂 It can also be use with a nice gown for wedding or graduation.”

From https://www.etsy.com/shop/ElizabethLovesGlass

Elizabeth of Elizabeth Loves Glass says, “Fresh beachy colors and a love-the-ocean theme feel like summer to me. I don’t use actual sea glass in my mosaics because it’s too rare – but the kiln formed and tumbled glass that I do use gives a similar feeling and is definitely summer-holiday inspired.”

Kelly from Colourscape Studios says, “I created this print for the summer time girls! It just takes me back to my early years of spending all summer on the beach without a care in the world :D”

Denise from Quilts Herbs Paper 4 U says, ”

I have been quilting and working with herbs and fabrics since my late teens. I love it!! I want to help people feel good about themselves. Much of my inspiration comes from pockets of peaceful spirituality in the Rocky Mountains and Four Corners area. Some of my inspiration also comes from Alpine Europe.”

Jennifer from Repurposed Wool Studio says, “When I think of summer… I think of colorful and fun. This dress up/ pretend play costume is great for kids wanting to run around and be free as a bird during summer fun.”

Lia of Ghirlandiamo says, ” I live in a South Italy town, where sun and sea are my constant fellows. I love bright and strong colours as in this my wreath. Do you like it?”

Martha from Holiday Creations 4 U says, “Summer place mats from my shop that can brighten up any summer time get together. I have a variety of summer themed mats plus a patriotic table runner.
I have been making these hand made place mats and table runners for over a year. They are a complement to my Christmas themed handmade stockings and tree skirts.”

Melanie from Woodland Market says, “I live in a city that is on the edge of Lake Ontario, and I have totally gotten into the nautical theme with all the water around me. I really love the look of the different sailor knots, and I decided to turn them into some cute bracelets!”

These are great stories by great artists, creating pieces that express the theme of ‘Handmade Summer.”

Have a great summer! Share this time with your family and friends.

All the best,

I have always send them high end cards, to let them know how much they mean to me. When I took up photography, I started to send them my prints in cards. My memories of searching for really stunning cards for my family has made me decide to offer my cards for sale to the whole wide world. This is one of my favourite Christmas cards, because the whole of north Wiltshire looked magical and sugar coated for one day when I took it. Also taking it I had to be a bit of an “outlaw” and ignore a sign “do not climb on the wood”. For law abiding citizen like me, it was quite an adrenalin.”

His work is a true inspiration for me, and that makes this piece pretty special, too.”

Southwestern Mixed Media Painting with Antelope Canyon Photo

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says, “Quite some of my art is inspired by the American Southwest. I am fascinated by the landscape – the desert and the red rocks. I love the colors that I associate with the Southwest – everything from yellow over ochre and all kinds of shade of red to burnt sienna. I love the legends and art of the Native Americans who live in this area. All of this comes together in this photo mixed media painting. I took the photo in lower Antelope Canyon near Page, AZ. Antelope Canyon is one the most fascinating slot canyons located on tribal land. You can only get there if guided by a Native American. While the painting’s colors remind of the hues of the American Southwest I also included some characters I associate with Native American culture, like Kokopelli. This for me symbolizes the American Southwest in all its mystery and beauty.”

Sandy from MiladyCreations says, “I believe the handbags and totes we carry should reflect our personality, hobbies and/or interests whether it be palm trees, sports, flowers, pets, favorite video games, etc. The possibilities are endless. Christmas In July- Tiger's Eye Dainty Necklace & Earring Set- Gold Plated Sterling

Kristen Sargent from KestrelCollection says, “Often jewelry is a “go big or go home” world, especially for romantic gifts. Big price tag and big jewels are often the must haves. For this set I had in mind the lady who likes to wear natural colors and wants fine jewelry quality but not the diamonds or price tag. With this necklace and earring set I’ve created a high quality gift full of natural beauty that the reciever is sure to love without emptying your wallet. The Tiger’s Eye stones are extremely well matched and have no flaws. The delicate marbling and facets shimmer honey to amber to latte in the light. Both the necklace chain and earring hooks are gold plated sterling. Hypo-allergenic, tarnish resistant, and far less prone to flaking than gold over base metal.”

Deck The Halls with Christmas In July

Contributor post by Amy of BeadsAndThreadsbyAmy

Our shops are offering some great sales during the month of July. It is a great time to reel in the deals and prepare for the holidays before the hustle and bustle sets in. I asked our team to share some items for holiday decor, and was so happy with the response. Which one of these items will find a home for the holidays with you?  To view or purchase an item, or to see the shop’s other items, simply click on the photo!

1) Patricia and Rebecca from northandsouthshabby says:
For the Christmas season, my home decor style is white Christmas. Love incorporating silver and glittery white pieces with vintage items.

This Santa and reindeer figurine, started out as a kitsch holiday cast off at a thrift shop. The cute reindeer begged to be rescued! After several coats of chalk paint, sanding, waxing and a generous sprinkling of german glass glitter, the once sad figurine transformed into a piece perfect for a shabby white Christmas!

Tea towels were often given as hostess gifts during the holiday season. This vintage linen towel is a particularly charming example. It’s adorable design was created by Hillary Knight, who illustrated the Eloise books. Artists often signed their designs on printed tea towels beginning in the 1950s. His signature is in the corner.

3) Elizabeth Wellburn from ElizabethLovesGlass says

Old Christmas light bulbs are great in crafts to create holiday decor items – I’ve seen them used as bowl fillers, on wreaths, garlands and coated with glitter as parcel decorations. There are tons of ideas on how to use these on Pinterest etc.

I found these ones in an old collection of family holiday decorations. Perfect time to destash.

I think these would look great in a clear vase with poinsettia blossoms! What could you do with them?

For Christmas and all year round I have this retro looking winter landscape photo print. We get hardly any snow, and the only white frosty winter view I do have (apart from the freezer) is the winter photo prints I have on my wall. This is from Bregenzerwald, Austrian Alps, and the snow was fresh from the night before.

And all through the house not a creature was stirring...

5) Elizabeth Berry from feesfusions says

I love making stained glass ‘snowflakes’ for the Christmas season and have them hanging on my windows. The bevels catch the light and reflect prisms throughout the rooms. I leave them hanging all year and in the ‘off’ season I think of them as ‘stars.’

When I decorate for the holidays, I love crystal, silver and gold – and a pop of color – simple and gorgeous! I would take this vase and fill it with silver and gold balls, place it on a table with sprigs of holiday greens and candles. The candle glow would reflect in the beautiful crystal, and make for a warm, wonderful environment. Ah… I just love the holidays.

I would love this on my holiday table filled with roses and poinsettias. Lovely!

These cookies are now a tradition in our family, and were in my husband’s before that for close to 50 years. They’re traditional Czech Christmas cookies, a shortbreadlike cookie with a currant jam in between.

They take me hours to make – mainly because I make hundreds of them to fill five tins for gifting – but they’re so worth it to see the smile on everyone’s faces, especially on those rare occasions when the extended family can’t be with us.

Nothing says Christmas like cookies in the oven! May this photo art bring you holiday inspiration in your kitchen.

8) Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says

When I was a little girl, we had a set of Babushka dolls that always came out for our Christmas decoration. When I learned how to make Babushka inspired dolls in an online class, I started to create them as Christmas ornaments.

These dolls “inner life” is an old light bulb that is wrapped in paper clay and then decorated. These dolls can hang from a Christmas tree or mantelpiece or they can also stand by themselves, although not always completely straight, which gives them some extra charm.

We have an around the world tree in my husband's classroom (he is a Spanish and Italian teacher). This would be perfect!

I have always had a love of roosters so when I found this pattern, I just had to paint it. It turns out it’s one of my best sellers for Christmas.

10) Sandy from MiladyCreations says

I believe the Christmas tree isn’t complete without a color coordinated tree skirt that flows with the Christmas decorating theme whether it be a modern animal print theme or something more traditional. It’s important to choose the correct size tree skirt in addition to the color and theme. This particular tree skirt is one of my favorites as I love the striped flow created along with the deer and squirrels in the print. This tree skirt was used in a full page photo feature in the Dec’2013 issue of Real Simple Magazine.

A tree skirt really does add flair and finish to your holiday home. Why not make it handmade and heartfelt?

11) Noel from MinkCouture says

I love vintage Christmas items, but they are often out of my budget. Luckily I was able to purchase a large lot of “new old stock” – vintage items that were never open or used. I decided to combine them with some vintage wooden spools and sewing ephemera and my line of “spoolies” was born.

Perfect for decorating your mantle or any other surface they are sure to add that little bit of vintage to your home for the holidays!

One of my earliest holiday memories was stringing cranberries and popcorn on a thread to make a holiday garland. I still love decorating with fresh fruits, flowers, evergreens and nuts. These cranberry red napkin rings are the perfect addition to a festive holiday tablescape.

I love the rich colors of Christmas and this shade of cranberry is one of my favorites! The color was actually something I stumbled on. I was etching a pink ornament with a baby’s initials and the year, but the etching cream smeared. I didn’t want to throw the ornament away so I tried etching it all over, not realizing the pink would turn into this gorgeous burgundy!

I can imagine an entire Christmas tree filled with this lovely cranberry glass ornament.

15) Jennifer Lotfield from CaffeinatedPapercuts says

There is nothing I love more than a white Christmas, except perhaps for the look of sparkling glitter on a tree. However, when you have a husband who is TERRIFIED of glitter in all shapes and forms, you need to get a little creative with your holiday decorations. Well, what better way to get the shimmer & shine you want without the mess than to put the glitter on the INSIDE of the ornament! And believe me, these babies SPARKLE!

So sparkly and whimsical.

Eco-Friendly Summer

Contributor post by Jessica of CrochetNature

Summer is a great time to celebrate, which is getting ready to celebrate one of the biggest holidays of the year…early…is such a great thing to do with Etsy Christmas in July! Summer is also a time to enjoy the sun, beaches, lakes, rivers, and exploring the outdoors. If we don’t take care of our world, the beauty may fade. BUT we can have a totally Eco-friendly summer that is beautiful with the following lovely items from shops who are part of the Etsy CIJ team. Here is what these fabulous shop owners have to say about their Eco-friendly creations.

summer-bee photo-AngsanaSeedsPhoto

Shop: Angsana Seeds Photo

Item: Earth Day Photo Print

“This year I created a special cards collection in honor of Earth Day. Three prints each featuring earth-conscious theme were chosen for this purpose. The first one, “Harvest,” features a honey bee on Queen Anne’s Lace to remind us that the honey bee is an integral part of our environment. Without them, everything would perish. To make these cards eco-friendly, they were specially printed on acid-free, FSC-certified fine art paper from sustainable sources.”

summer-paper bracelets-byTheArtBug

Shop: byThe Art Bug

Item: Paper Beads Bracelet

“I first learned making these beads when I was in 6th grade! They always amazed me so much, it was fun to imagine how a junk piece of paper would turn into something so beautiful and unique. This art needs a lot of precision and patience which is what gives it the neat and delicate look. Each bead is hand cut, hand rolled and then covered with gloss before it becomes a part of the jewelry piece. I also design each of my jewelry piece. This Eco-friendly bracelet is unisex and is perfect to adorn your summer style.”

summer-shell ring-TreasureGrotto

Shop: Treasure Grotto

Item: Siebler Sea Shell Spoon Toe Ring

“Sterling silver spoons which were once given as gifts, collected as souvenirs and passed down through generations have survived the ravages of time but are often left to sit in drawers or boxes, unseen and unappreciated in today’s fast paced world. I transform these spoons into wearable art for today’s woman. The process is delicate because the spoons are often 100 years old, or older, and who knows what they have been through during that time. Using my experience and skills learned in the fine jewelry business, I cut, shape, smooth, and fire each piece to create the jewelry, then finish each one by hand to bring the glow of the antique silver back to life. Today these treasures find new life as jewelry from Treasure Grotto in an eco-friendly process that recycles the old silver while preserving the beauty of the original creations.”

summer-chunky cup cozy-CrochetNature

Shop: Crochet Nature

Item: Chunky Cup Cozy Crochet Pattern

“The yarn I used for these cozies is quirky chunky oversized yarn, taken from the fashion industry. It is made using the off-cuts from the textile manufacturing process which are then up-cycled into reclaimed yarn spools. It is highly ethical and quickly creates instant impact. It’s doubly good for the environment because it also replaces the cardboard cozies that many coffee shops hand out and it works well to know which cup belongs to who at summer BBQs.”

summer-coasters-byTheCrochetBug

Shop: by The Crochet Bug

Item: Handmade Rustic Coaster

“I hand crocheted these star coasters with 100% natural hemp twine. My inspiration for making these coasters is my love of working with natural materials, and the star design is nature inspired. The hemp twine gives these coasters a very rustic and elegant look. They can be used in any season, including summer!”

summer-wood fish-JuguetesEloisa

Which Dad? The one who is all natural.

Shop: Juguetes Eloisa

Item: Handmade Wood Fish

“I try to make my toys as Eco-friendly as possible. All of my toys are handmade with pinewood, produced in Chile (where I live) by very high standards of sustainability. I also use non-toxic water-based paint, which allows to the grain of the wood to appear beneath the colors and seals them with natural beeswax and natural oil polish. I think being Eco-friendly does not only lie in using Eco-friendly materials, but also transmits a desire to take care of our planet by being in contact with natural materials. Also, all of my toys are nature themed – almost all are animals! These fish reminds us of the sea, the beach and the bright colors of summer.”

summer-woven pot-ChickenJungle

Shop: ChickenJungle

Item: Origami Succulent Plant Pot

“When I was a little kid in the 1960’s, many of my classmates were making fancy folded paper chains out of gum wrappers…beautiful intricate creations, sometimes long enough to go around walls! I was always jealous of them because I could never seem to figure out how to fold the gum wrappers. Now 40-something years later I have finally figured out how to fold the wrappers right, but I don’t chew gum so I have no gum wrappers. But I do have countless many cardboard paper towel tubes. I have discovered that they are the perfect size to cut and fold, and they make very sturdy objects.”

Aren’t these great – creative and oh, so summery!

We’d love to hear your comments and know if you have any other ideas for a fabulous Eco-friendly summer!
