Friedasophie

Friedasophie

Tell us about yourself.

My store name is Friedasophie and I am a Hamburg Native, living in San Francisco.

I am a San Francisco-based Jewelry goldsmith and designer.

I named my store after my 2 grandmothers who were fashion designers, writers, hat makers and jewelry collectors.

I grew up in a family where creativity was a part of life.

As a child, I started out as a painter, then switched to fashion design which inspired me to become a jewelry designer.FS13

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

I took a metal smith class in 2008. First I made a pair of earring for myself and a local store fell in love with them and asked me to make a dozen which than sold out within a week. From there it went pretty fast, which led me to open my Etsy store. After about 6 month my hobby turned to a full-time business.FS2

Tell us a bit about your products

I handcraft all jewelry pieces in my own studio and only work with Sustainable Gems and Stones
using ethical and eco-friendly business practices.FS3

What inspires your work?

I am constantly drawing, collecting and photographing something that I find intriguing.

I also find inspiration by traveling or visiting local vintage shows.FS4

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

My business has been growing steadily over the past couple years and I am now starting
on getting a small team together to work with me at my studio, so I can free up some time for me,
to design new collections.FS5

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

Most of my pieces are one of a kind. My customers appreciate the uniqueness of my pieces, they
perfectly suit a person that is unique themselves.FS6

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

I have a home studio which is small and efficient. I am a minimalist and also like to take my tools with me during travel to take the studio on the road.FS7

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

I have learned that it takes lots of patience and persistence to keep a business alive.FS8

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

My advice is to just go for it. If you have a great idea, then just try to create it. In the beginning it might not turn out as you hoped but with time and practice you will reach your potential. And just be yourself.FS9

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I love to go for a walk on the beach and then come home to a cup of hot chocolate and a movie. And I love to dance.FS10

What is your favorite quote?

“To live a creative live, we must lose our fear of being wrong” by Joseph Chilton PearceFS12

Where can people find out more about your business?

Gardening

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

I imagine some of us love to get our hands dirty with our gardens.

Here at Christmas in July we want to know all about what type of gardens you have, how long you have been gardening and anything else you wish to tell us that is related to the theme.

Sue and Misty from shabbyshopgirls says we have a large vegetable garden where we grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers & a variety of melons. Gardening books are absolutely invaluable to us, which is why we keep on hand many different types. We also have many flower and garden inspired items.

Dawn Whitehand  from DeeDeeDeesigns said I am lucky enough to live on ten acres in rural Australia and we have a huge vegetable and fruit garden.

Spring/ Summer is our biggest harvest, and this year was particularly successful. I have spent the last month preserving, pickling and fermenting the rewards! This has however taken away time from managing my Etsy shop – but it has to be done while the produce is fresh!

After a big day in the kitchen I reward myself with wine!! But during the day I take the occasional coffee break and sit on the veranda and enjoy looking at the garden.

Melissa R from missy69 states I love gardening! I wouldn’t say I am great at it, but I am always learning. I home school my children, and one of the best ways to teach them Science is to try to grow something. My daughter and I currently have a 3 Sisters Garden, that is corn, squash and beans. This is from a History lesson on the Pilgrims and Native Americans. So far so good, lol. We live in sunny Florida, so usually by March we can start the veggie garden. I have peppers every year, and tomatoes. But, this year we tried something new. Plus the all the flowering plants, to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. BTW another great Science activity is to plant host plants for butterflies. They will lay their eggs on the host plant, and then you can watch the whole metamorphosis process. Very cool! I love to paint all the beautiful things in this world, and one of them is below. An absolute favorite, the ruby-throated hummingbird.

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says gardening is balm for my soul. I love it. When we moved in our home on a corner lot there was only lawn in front of the house. Using the sheet mulching technique I converted it to a garden that now, four years later, has become a real paradise for birds, butterflies and other critters. Unfortunately the deer like it, too, and treat it as their personal salad buffet. However, that doesn’t stop me to constantly work on it, weeding, cutting back, making space for new plants. I love every season in it. At the moment I’m working on my backyard to turn it into a similar sanctuary.

As a photographer I love to take pictures of the flowers – if there’s a little bug on the plants, even better!

Jenya from Veddma discusses this week I take the first steps to start the garden, and it’s exciting as ever, since we have a new space to shape. I have met with Gavin from Edible Landscaping Ottawa to help us figure out what is feasible to do in our space, with considerations of sustainability, cost, and aesthetics, using permaculture principles wherever possible to maximize the food-growing potential. I’ve been experimenting with various garden designs, including vertical towers and spirals over the years. Quite a bit of it is documented on my blog, here is the latest post:

Patricia and Rebecca from northandsouthshabby states I moved into a newly built home 6 years ago. Unfortunately, the builder had stripped all the vegetation and left a pretty blank slate. I have pushed, planted and prodded little spots to come to life. Every year gets better and a little bigger. An addition of a rain barrel has helped my flowers thrive. One storm can fill the 55 gallon barrel to capacity. My trusty watering can is my constant gardening tool, bringing the sweet rainwater to thirsty flowers.

Tanya Hardman from TheWoollyTangle discusses I always loved gardening from a very young age; I even had my own patch of ground at my granddad’s allotment. Although I realize now how little I actually did!

I used to be a full-time gardener in a local stately home before we had our eldest son but couldn’t return to the profession afterwards thanks to childcare restraints. I’ve settled for making my own garden, which is finally starting to look lovely after a lot of hard work. Hoping for a lot of veggies and flowers this year.

Lots of my pieces are inspired by the colours and forms of nature. The brooch featured here is an attempt to recreate the beautiful full blooms of the peony plants which are just budding up in my garden at the moment.

Desert Dabbler from DesertDabbler states gardening is a challenge here in the desert southwest but very rewarding. My lavender loves the dry sunny climate. My other favorite flowers are Yellow Bells, which are tubular flowers that grow on tall vines. We are also on the path for Monarch butterflies. To encourage them we grow desert milkweed, a very plain plant but one that butterflies love. I combined my love for butterflies and flowers in these dangle earrings. But these are Swarovski butterflies — also beautiful.

Corkycrafts from Corkycrafts says spring brings wildflower season in Texas. I love to garden and sell wildflower seeds to share the love of gardening with my clients and customers. Only during the spring/summer I sell my seeds to share the color of wildflowers across the USA.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese discusses that I have loved being in the garden and helping my dad garden from a young age. However once I moved out of home I have not had my own garden. I do have a courtyard where I love to keep plants in pots and attempt to grow herbs and vegetables. Unfortunately the possums get to the herbs, veggie leaves and strawberries before we do!
I have included this set of envelopes which feature flowers and butterflies and remind me of spring and being in the garden.

Jessica and Bryan King from FeathandKee says Bryan and I both really like to grow things. Sometimes we have success, others not so much. I always get way to ambitious in the wonderful Spring weather, then when the heat of Summer hits….  I always have good luck with Okra, Zinnias, and Marigolds. This key chain was inspired by the pretty flowers of Spring and Summer.

Dana Hamant from LilybeanzBowtique states my garden is a constant work in progress. We have lived here for 6 years, and each year we work on one piece and making it our own. In the past we have taken down bushes, rearranged bulbs, and started a herb garden. This year we are excited to start growing strawberries and tomatoes! Next year we will be tearing up our existing deck and building a brand new one, so that we can better enjoy our outdoor living space.

I absolutely love being outside and being a part of nature. This tutu dress is the epitome of what I love about being outside.

Flavor Of The Month

Contributor post by Catherine from DesignsbyCnC

Food not only nourishes us and provides fuel for our bodies, food also has a long history in art.  Most often food is the object of our still life paintings and photographs.

These days, food plays a huge role in our visual culture:  social networks such as Facebook and Pinterest are filled with photos of meals and recipes.  Food surrounds us with a colorful palette ranging from the warm hues of oranges and apples to the cool hues of blueberries and plums.  Often times we are inspired by the texture of our food.  How many times have you taken the mashed potatoes on your plate and created sculptures or mountain landscapes?  Ever notice the hot bubbling surface of your pizza, reminiscent of an oozing lava flow.

I asked the handmade artists of the Etsy Christmas In July Team to tell how food inspires them and to share an item from their store that captures this inspiration.

Kelly from ColourscapeStudios shared this special moment:

I always had fun with Mum in the kitchen as a kid, especially when it came to baking cupcakes! There was nothing better than the treat at the end of licking the beaters… she always turned them off thankfully!

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns shared her inspiration:

I am very inspired by food – especially eating it! So I love-making ceramic tableware to enhance the eating experience. I find unique handmade pottery makes a meal more intimate and special, and this is what I try to capture in my one of a kind tablewares.

Tapas Sushi Serving Set

Karen Hafel from timetalentjewels had this to say:

When spending time in the kitchen I always enjoy using my handy little Wool Felted Hot Pads. Using them to take out hot dishes from the oven and also having others to use as a trivet. These are nice and thick and I just love them.

Corkycrafts from Corkycrafts responded:

I love to cook and garden too. When I posted these seeds in my shop I call them Canary bird flowers but after researching them at Texas A&M and found the blooms and the foliage are edible, with a delicious peppery flavor perfect for garnish or salads. I have not eaten them in a salad and prefer it more as a flower….but you can try it!

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit answered:

Many of the gifts in our shop are centered around food. We offer personalized cutting boards, cheese boards, herb chopping blocks, cutlery, and serving trays. We have a deep love and appreciation of wine and spirits and often pair our serving trays with our personalized glassware. We accept custom order requests for any combination of the products in our shop, for custom graphic design requests beyond the design options available in our listings, and to include any of our additional gift services including gift wrap, gift cards, and redeemable gift certificates. @Designsthelimit we offer customer service to bring your ideas to your gift recipients door in the style you design.

Sue and Misty from shabbyshopgirls remarked:

What better way to be inspired by food, than to peruse a vintage cookbook! There are so many interesting recipes, not to mention, great menu planning for events, cocktail parties and great information on cuts of meat and measurements!

Dana Hamant from LilybeanzBowtique stated:

My children inspire me daily. They are constantly coming up with ideas for me to use in my designs. My middle daughter loves to bake. Her specialty is cupcakes! She makes them for all sorts of events. Friends and family rave about them. She is only 12, but I foresee a long future in the baking world for her.

This design was inspired by her and her love of baking.

Connie Lee from Bungalow42 shared this memory:

These earrings remind me of the lemon drop candy my paternal grandmother kept in a dish in her living room. Important distinction as my ‘maternal’ grandmother was more of a burgers and convertibles gal.

The beads are vintage Lucite Moonglow in a cheery lemon yellow. The Bali sterling silver ‘fancy’ headpin give the appearance of a small cluster of grapes on the end. Yum, I think it is snack time.

Customer Relations

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Business relies a lot on what your relations with your customer is like. Is it good, bad, indifferent?

Here at Christmas in July we want to know what can (or do) you do to better serve your customer?

Kelly from ColourscapeStudios says I think the biggest thing in customer service is to be genuine. The reason people shop with small businesses like all of ours is to be able to connect to the maker/seller. Working within two genres that personalizes items, I’ve found that the people I work with react well to being served properly – using their name if you know it, talking through any questions and concerns they have, appreciating their time and most of all, delivering the product you say you’re going to.CSSCR

Gari Anne from beadloverskorner said I have been in customer service all of my life, and the most important thing in developing a relationship with them is to respond to their needs quickly, even if you don’t have the answer or its bad news, if there is an issue then stay on top of it until it is resolved. When you do that, it shows the customer that they are important and that they can trust you. This goes a long way in getting repeat business and word of mouth advertising!

il_570xN.745786326_fclt

Fortune Teller Amethyst Crystal ball Necklace

Rachel Placek from LoveandPetFurCrochet states I LOVE the customer service aspect of selling on Etsy. I get really excited when people ask me about creating a special item just for them. I know many sellers hope to just list their own creations and sell them but I actually love to create based on ideas and requests from my buyers. I find that if I add those creations as “made to order” items in my shop they end up being some of my best sellers.

An example of this is my crochet baby giraffe. I created this along with a gorgeous baby blanket for a customer who had very specific colors in mind. She wanted these two items for a baby shower gift and sent me a picture of the nursery design. Because I crocheted this giraffe for her I have sold at least 10 giraffes since listing this one last fall! I may have never thought to crochet this giraffe except for the request of this customer.

So, my advice, is to take the time to listen and think outside the box. If you can create something special for someone by all means do it! You won’t regret it.

Crochet Giraffe Amigurumi

Richard and Tatiana from DesignsTheLimit said When our customers are purchasing a listing to have it shipped directly to their gift recipient, we offer additional gift services including gift wrap and custom-made gift cards. We print the gift message provided on premium card stock using a font complimentary to the personalized gift they will open and include an envelope. Providing professional gift services is an important part of the customer service we offer from graphic design to the gift recipient’s door. We also offer graphic design from images submitted by our customers to inspired designs for any concept or idea which comes to mind. We are especially busy around the holidays and offer rush orders for last-minute personalized gift giving year round. Our Secret Santa E-Gift Certificate listing is available from Christmas to Christmas in July! Purchasing a redeemable e-gift certificate allows the gift recipient to enter the information they want and choose a design and font combination to their style and preference and is more than an option for last minute shoppers. @Designsthelimit we provide personalized gift services to match the personalized gifts we provide. Just Say No to gift cards and make your next gift purchase, a gift giving experience.

Gift wrap and Card

Lia Russo from Ghirlandiamo says The customer care is really one of the most important aspects of selling for me.
For a long time I have been a trainer of that topic, so you can imagine how much I take care of it.

With customers it’s necessary to be very patient: a lot of people do not read descriptions and then, when they receive the item, they think you sent them a wrong one. This is just an example!

What is my customer care politics?
– To reply in the shortest time to any information request
– Great willingness
– A small gift every time I ship an order and a thanks card handwritten.

I see my customers appreciate all this and give a five stars review, combining it with nice and warm words.

MadeOnKailash_02

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, my name is Maria. I’m from Russia, I’m 31 years old. I’m a graphic designer and work in a magazine full-time. I like my work as it’s connected with creation in every instant! My job is to organize pictures and texts to create a harmonic layout and as a result a harmonic magazine to make readers interested in every article. Isn’t it fascinating?

When did you open your business and what made you decide to do so?

I have been trying different kinds of handicrafts since my childhood. I always liked to receive and to present handmade gifts as they kept a piece of the creator’s heart and soul and they are more expressive than mass trading goods. My granny as well as my mother encouraged me a lot – they are really great handmade crafters! They taught me to sew, crochet, knit, but later I decided to impress them with learning new ways of creating handmade items. I succeeded then, and now they are the main fans of my crafts projects! As I’ve been creating since my young age, I’ve collected a lot of pretty handmade goods at home. Every friend was already been gifted with something from me, so I was wondering what should I do with so many cute goods? One of my good friend advised me to try selling on Etsy, and everything spun so fast!

Tell us a bit about your products.

Recently I’ve become very fond of making jewelry because there I can combine different craft skills and materials, such as, weaving and beading, working with metal and gemstone and so on. Now, you’ll find different types of jewelry and accessories in my shop. I’m always crazy about details making sure every item is as good as it’s possible. I never sell an item if I don’t like it by myself and if I’m not satisfied with its quality!

MadeOnKailash_03

What inspires your work?

In my free time, I practice hatha yoga (besides crafting). I’ve been practicing already for 4 years and yoga influences me even in my creation process. I love yoga so much, it brings me tranquility and helps my mind to catch new ideas. Also, yoga brought me great love for India. I’ve been there three times as backpacker and hope to go back there again for a long time. For me, India is an incredible country with its music culture, religious traditions, joyful people and of course masters of yoga!

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

As I’m so fond of India, my secret dream (or crazy idea) is to earn enough money for a new trip only by selling my crafts! I know it’ll take a lot of time, but it would be great to succeed! But to be serious, I really enjoy getting feedback from my customers! I want to share the joy of creating with whole the world!

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

All of my items are one of a kind products of my imagination. Every piece is full of good vibes and positive energy, which I send in every parcel with my items to my buyers!

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

My flat is my workspace. It becomes a little bit messy from time to time as sometimes I work behind my computer watching z movie or listening to lectures about everything on TED, than I move to another room to paint my packaging boxes! Later, I have to gather everything around in my special storage boxes, otherwise my pretty cat will take everything she likes! Sometimes she manages to steal a bead or a rope!

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

As for me I think selling is not easy, especially in Russia where it’s difficult to take part in local markets and fairs because of high participant fees – that’s why I decided to sell online. I can say that in the very beginning I was more optimistic about selling my goods, but later realized that it took a lot of time and the only thing I needed was patience.

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Everyone who decides to sell online really needs a lot of patience because it will probably be longer than expected before you get your first sale, than another one and so on. You shouldn’t expect big profit, but when someone finds you among other amazing artists and likes your creation so much that decide to buy it, it’s the most wonderful thing about selling your handmade! It’s worth the wait to get this experience! Every sale for me is a little celebration!

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

Aside from yoga, in my free time I help in an orphan house for children with mental disorders in Moscow. It’s not an ordinary orphan house, where walls are grey and nurses don’t smile. It’s really the Home for little ones whose lives are not easy. Recently, I decided to donate 20% of each purchase from my shop to help this little home for special children to evolve. Also I’m always happy to watch good movies in cinema or attend some interesting exhibitions.
