Nature Gifts

Contributor post by Julie from EveryoneLovesGifts0

Spring is nearly upon us followed by the lovely summer months. I love this time of year with the sun shining on our faces, it makes us all happy. But it is also a time to take notice of nature around us, nature can be of trees, flowers or nature animals themselves.

Here at CIJ we want to know what gifts you have that reflect the theme ‘nature’ and tell us a little about your gift.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns says: This necklace is made from clay, which is from the Earth, and features two pendants in the shape of leaves. The leaves were smoke fired in a bonfire using tree branches, leaves and various other natural materials, such as pine cones.

So this necklace certainly is of and from nature!

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz says, For me, the ocean is one of the big forces of nature. I am lucky to live close by the Pacific Ocean and whenever I spend time at the coast I am captivated by its stunning beauty. A walk on the beach shows me all the treasures nature has to offer right here: driftwood, shells, sand dollars, algae, small crabs.

This mixed media painting was inspired by the interestingly shaped piece of driftwood I found at one of our beaches. Everything else evolved around it. I added some shells and a sea star as well. The quote by Kate Chopin was the final touch and fits perfectly.

Men’s And Women’s Fashion

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Over the years there have been so many different trends and looks in fashion. There have been bell-bottoms, flapper wear, leisure suits and more.

What do you have in your shop that relates to men and women’s fashion?

What can you tell us about the fashion? What year is it from? What decade? Tell us anything and everything you can about it.

Barbara from MermaidsHatbox says films like the Great Gatsby, Miss Fisher, Downton Abbey show us the very creative decade of the 20th. Luxurious materials such as silk, velvet and lace are precedence, many in Gold and silver for the grand appearance. Embellished with sequins and sparkling beads and buttons.

I love to make the Cloche Hat of this decade. It makes a lot of fun to go looking for particular materials and to tread them.

LM Shewalter from BackoftheDrawer states that I think this vintage hat is from the 70s. It reminds me of the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” or “Maude”. They wore so many cool things! This hat is made from patterned white and gold fabric with glints of gold and silver metallic threads. The velvet bow and the netting are in great condition. This hat looks like it just came out of Mary Tyler Moore’s closet.
It’s just a bright, fun statement of the decade… spunky and assertive!

I Can See Clearly Now

Contributor Post by Sheila and Shannon of BeadyEyedBird

They say something is ‘Crystal Clear’ when you can see right through it, like good, pure water or clean glass. We asked our Teamies what they love and/or offer that is crystal clear, and here’s what they shared with us.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeSupplies said:

These beads are not only clear, but are also faceted giving them a crystal like quality. This type of gem is so versatile – it can be combined with any colour and will reflect that colour; can be used as a focal among other colours; or can be used on its own!

These beads are ideal for jewellery design, quilting, scrapbooking – name your craft project!

When I first discovered the joys of vintage buying and selling I was shy about stocking glass items … party because I knew very little about identifying quality, but I also had a deep fear of getting the packaging wrong and ending up with breakages! My learning curve included watching the TV show Bargain Hunters, and that is where I first heard about Orrefors crystal. This paneled art glass bowl was my first personal encounter with the ‘real thing’. Stunned by the both the design and the clarity, I overcame my anxiety and brought it into my shop. I now stock quite a few glass pieces but this one is still my all time favorite.

Dream Kitchen

Dream Kitchen

I love this topic! I have many dream kitchen scenarios in my head and in the course of adulthood have had the pleasure of making some of those dreams reality. Right now my kitchen is a dreamy retro cafe with vintage radio and soda bottle collections, restaurant booths and even a Coca-Cola vending machine in the nearly dining room.

To many the words DREAM KITCHEN means with all the bells and whistles – new appliances, granite countertops, plenty of storage space. To others this could mean just the perfect combination of space, themed decor and a breakfast nook to enjoy their mornings. What kind of dream kitchen do you envision or have you seen/visited over the years? We’d love to see your accompanying items and hear your stories.

Pam Maggio from PamsPawsJewelry says

Well, I hate to cook, LOL! My idea of a Dream Kitchen or pretty one is a theme in pretty colors and of course a big enough one to eat in and decorate, LOL! So, for now how about a cheerful blue and white kitchen with an Asian theme and Oriental flare!

On shelves above you can have Asian style artsy items in blue and white, maybe a wall hanging embroidered with the gorgeous Japanese style gardens that I have seen! Doors leading outside to a small Japanese themed herb garden with little stone pagodas and such!

The table which is the center of most kitchens in many cultures can be set with bamboo place mats and a Chinese or Japanese fancy ginger jar or two, along with some bonsai trees and Oriental style flower arrangements! Then, set the table for tea with a pretty Asian teapot like mine I have posted below, matching tea cups, and have a relaxing time with friends having Asian cuisine and tea!

Leila Blakely from LasLovelies says

I almost had a dream kitchen. I loved my re-wired 20’s stove and oven on legs. I was able to feed my cats under there. Ha! Loved it. I even had the old-time refrigerator with the motor up on the top.
I decorated the tops of my cupboards with Hills Brothers Coffee Tins and every nook and cranny with Royal or Schilling Tins along with my red and white Hall Pottery collection. I added the red and white gingham curtains with white ruffles and black ribbon. Perfectly cute. Now I want to have a farmer sink and porcelain drain cupboards. I really don’t care if I have a dishwasher since the only thing that fits in them are plates which are the easiest items to wash. My coffee cups don’t even fit.

As I mentioned before my tastes are changing but I still like the black, white and red accents. This is a fabulous decorator piece. It would look good in a modern, farm-house chic or even a retro kitchen. I’m sure someone would love to decorate with this nostalgic, workable food scale. Whether it’s in a grouping with other items such as fruit, flowers or utensils it will be sure to capture one’s eye. It is beautiful, intricate and in fine vintage condition.

After we made the last college tuition payment for our son, I was fortunate to be able to remodel our dated kitchen! We now have gorgeous cherry cabinets, quartz counters and, my favorite feature, a Grohe “touch less” faucet!
The contractor even honored my wish for a “curio” cabinet at one end of the island! It came out fantastic with wood shelving and glass doors. I enjoy displaying some of our Shop items inside. My daughter and I love finding retro (and kitschy) kitchen items, here is a cute trivet we found in Shipshewanna, Indiana.

Linda from LazyYVintage says

We are now just finishing a kitchen remodel. It is kind of a farmhouse style with white brick walls and hickory cabinets. Just some trimming out and hanging my wall decorations back up and Jim is done.

But I love to cook and bake. So my favorite part of the new kitchen is a yellow painted peg board to hang up my cooking tools. Wire whisks, spatulas, ice cream scoops, tongs, etc. Julia Childs always have a peg board that her husband would put up where ever they lived in the world. I couldn’t wait for that piece to be done in my new yellow, green, and pine cone brown kitchen.

And, these are my new old everyday dishes. It was a big set of a service of 16, so some have made there way into the shop.

Love these cheerful items above! Really my dream kitchen is one that’s inviting and accommodates a lot of people. My kitchen right now is warm and inviting and our family loves it. The one thing that drives me crazy though is that our kitchen sink is right next to the back door, which is the door that everyone uses. So my dirty dishes are the first thing that people see!! When I win the lottery I’m definitely remodeling that!! Still, it seems the kitchen is the happiest place in our home!

My dream kitchen would be centered around drinks and fun. I would have a very nice hot drinks bar where I can make all sorts of versions of coffee and tea. I would have an espresso machine, french press, electric kettle, and of course a way to brew a big pot of coffee. I want a wide selection of teas, from simple black teas to herbal remedies. Although I’m not a big alcohol drinker, I still would love to have a small alcohol bar as well. I want wines for special occasions and a couple of nice bottles of whiskey for my husband to have a glass now and then. My center bar would also have comfortable bar chairs for sitting to play board and card games with guests. The decor would reflect my family’s nerd love, fun and playful. My kitchen is very large, and I’m happy to say that we are well on our way to making this dream happen!

I think if I had an extra kitchen (because I love my chickens and roosters in the main cooking part of the present one) I think I would decorate with owls, this black and white one would be useful.. the counter-tops could be black marble and the back splashes white marble.

The Joy Of Color

Contributor Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

As an artist I love colors of every hue, brightness, patina, neon! You name it I have used it in some aspect in an art or craft item. As a collector, I love the unique and wonderful vintage item, the older the better – in many aged woods and metals, or any combination, even plastic and fabrics!

If this topic has swept over you with magnificent rainbows, fluttering golden wings and blue-green ocean waves Please share your thoughts! We’d love to hear them and see your items.

Leila Blakely from LasLovelies says

I have always loved the bright and bold color palette . My favorite is the rainbows I get to see from my view into the river valley below me. I have several beautiful double rainbow photos I have been able to capture. God’s handiwork and promise.

This little gal is the epitome of a rainbow. Ha! Her colorful leggings and bright multi colored cumber bun. I really don’t think anyone can get any closer to a bright and bold statement as this little doll. As much as this palette is my favorite I certainly don’t think I would be caught dead wearing an outfit like this. Ha!

As an artist I love getting my hands covered in paints. I seem to paint myself as well as any piece I am working on. My favorite color is Yellow warm and relaxing. I totally get lost in colors and thoughts while painting. Painting and designing my work bring joy to my life with a slash of color to my world.

Soo….as an interior designer, I’m an equal opportunity COLOR lover!! There really isn’t ANY color I don’t enjoy working with! I often push folks to step away from the safe and boring ” beige” as I know they are always more thrilled with the “feeling” a color brings to an interior.

As for my ETSY work…COLOR is always critical. I like things to blend well, so I’m very “picky” about how an art piece comes together. Every addition to a piece has to be complimentary. I consider the “balance” of color throughout every work as well. Here are Holt Howard Kitties that are “Vintage Valentine’s brought to life!” Putting together a pleasing palette for this pair was fun for me!

Many people are afraid of color! As a designer, we love to start with a few key pieces in solids and start adding colors and textures. Most kitchens tend to have a neutral color palette and this is one of the easiest rooms to add pops and sparks of color! Start with a colorful vase, a piece of artwork or a series of colorful tea towels. It will liven up the room and your enhance your spirit!

I don’t think I ever met a color I didn’t like (except maybe mustard yellow). When I find a design or pattern I like, my first inclination is to make it in every color that the fiber comes in. I have made my winter hats in all the basics – black, brown, gray, blue – and have more to work through. My favorite so far is this bright pistachio green, accented with a hint of white & gray alpaca.

I love colour (even when it is not in fashion – lol) and one of my first memories of colour is looking through a kaleidoscope as a child. The patterns and colours left an imprint on my mind that I am still inspired by today.

These beads, available in a range of colours, remind me of the kaleidoscope effect because of the faceted surface which reflects colour, and look great when incorporated in jewellery, costume design , bunting, journalling and more.

Color is magical! It tells stories hidden in a piece of art. I love all colors ranging from black and white to pastel and bold rainbow colors.  Once upon a time I was completely intimidated by color. As a then Manhattanite I tended to wear black – a lot. It was not until I began to take classes in jewelry design that my eyes were opened to the endless possibilities of color. In much of my work I lean toward bright colors and unusual pairings of disparate colors. Finding vintage materials in unusual colors or color pairings is always a joy.

These three necklaces feature a trio of vintage hand painted fish with a folk art vibe in bright and interesting color combinations. The fish were originally part of a large statement necklace. The original piece had large oxidized chain links with antique brass bells and etched fish as well as four smaller plump hand painted fish which I turned into earrings. The necklace was a vintage piece that belonged to a family member but no one seems to know its origins. Reimagining that original funky strand of odd bits of vintage painted wood and metal was such fun!

I LOVE color – which is evident if you take a scroll through my shop! I made these pendants after being inspired by the color of a glacier I saw, which was blue even though we think of ice or snow as white. As you can see in this wristlet I love many shades of color and will use just about anything to bring it to life.

In my home I have painted the walls a neutral color so that I can use vibrant colors to bring life to each room and tell the story of what they are used for which leaves my guest walking wanting to take those ideas to implement in their own homes. Yes….color is the way to express yourself to its deepest level.

Each and every item in my shop are bright and colorful and it is visible in this necklace. The beads are bright and bold and remind me of when I was a kid, little rock candies and bright-colored jawbreakers or even bubble gum that you could buy for a penny. Nowadays I don’t believe you can buy anything for a penny! A penny doesn’t go very far these days…does it!

Hello everyone, these are great examples of the joys found in color combinations.

I work mostly in pastels and when I set my shop up found myself challenged by a special order (and realizing I had limited my palette) when a customer requested bold colors of red, black and white.

My owl paper towel holder came out pretty cute!

Winter always reminds us of the beauty, bounty and power of nature — and what better to celebrate that than an exploration of what Etsians do and have in the way of wood and/or stone. Do you make (or buy) planters from driftwood? Jewelry from gemstones? Collect wooden breadboxes or paint pet rocks? Whatever you have and/or love, we hope you’ll comment and tell us about it! Here’s what some of your Etsy team-mates had to say about this subject. In the meantime, happy BRRRRR time of year… (For many of us, anyway…)

Most of my work features vintage materials but I confess to a weakness for some gemstones. Opals and jade are among my favorites. These sweet dangle earrings combine the two.

In addition to the untreated blue Peruvian opals these earrings feature two different variations of light green jade.

The twenty gemstones are hand-knotted onto teal linen thread. Each stone is spaced expressly to mirror the opposite earring.

I love natural materials which stems from a childhood of wandering through natural environments!

These wooden beads feature gorgeous natural variations and would make great additions to organic jewellery pieces – or any other craft project you may have in mind.
