Nemezinda

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Betti Horvath and I am the owner of my one-person enterprise, named NEMEZINDA.
I have three children and we live in a village very close to Budapest. The philosophy of Waldorf pedagogy stands close to is, so we enrolled all of our children to the closest Waldorf school.
I have a MSc degree of Chemical Engineering, but I have always been love with art crafting since my childhood. I worked 6 years in a Pharmaceutical Company till my first son was born. He was born with cleft palate, which was operated successfully at his age of 9 months, and I decided to stay at home with him and his younger brother. When they started the kindergarten I met the wet felting craft. This felting hobby became so serious, that I finished a 2-years-long felting course at the Heritage House of Hungary. There I studied a lot about the historical, social, traditional background of the felting craft.

When did you open your business and what made you decide to do so?

The first scene was Etsy’s marketplace where I showed my felted items. I opened my first Etsy shop (former name FeltedbyBetti), Nemezinda, in 2015.
The first product was made for Valentine day, felted hearts and bowls integrated with red sequins. While I was waiting for my first sale I changed the profile of my shop: I left the sequins and found a niche market: felted playmats, playscapes in 3 dimensions. So trunks, small hills, flowers, volcanoes were growing on the play mats inspired by the nature and mainly by my daughter. Meanwhile we moved to abroad and being on Etsy helped me to continue my work.
I chose Etsy’s Marketplace, because it is international, easy to use and the fees are affordable. The international delivery of my felted items is not difficult, because they are light, non fragile items.

Tell us a bit about your products.

All of my products are handmade by the wet felting technique by me. I offer different types and sizes of playscapes, playmats in the Nemezinda shop. The size of the smaller ones is similar to an adult’s palm, the largest is 24”x24” /60cmx60cm. They are great for playing, for storytelling or for a season table. Usually my customers buy them for birthdays of age of 1 to 6. My daughter, who is 8, still loves to play with them. I also offer felted fairies, gnomes and elves to complete these playscapes.
I opened my second shop, called BohoNemezinda, in 2018, where I offer colourful, boho, nunofelted scarves, flowers and accessories.

What inspires your work?

My main inspirers are the Mother Nature, my daughter, Sophie, and my customers.
I am amazed by the colours, forms, plants and animals of our planet. It is inspires me everywhere I go, every season I live.
I love to see children playing on the playscapes and they always have great ideas for stories as well as for new designs.
The most popular playmats were originally custom orders from my enthusiastic customers. I love to felt their dreams!

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

This year I would like to launch the playmats into my local, Hungarian market, meanwhile to increase the international sales via Etsy. My goal is to get steady sales and make my customers happy.

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

There are two main types of felting: wet felting and needle felting.
The needle felting technique is very popular in the western European countries and USA, it results in very nice, detailed items, however they can usually serve as decorations.
Wet felting technique originates in Middle Asia where it was mainly used to make felted blankets and rugs. Wet felted items have strong, durable, washable texture, they last long. That is why I use this traditional felting method to create the playmates, playscapes. They are also stands out with their 3D elements, like hollow caves, trunks, trees and flowers.

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

Fortunately I can use the largest room in our house as a felting studio. I bought 4 second-hand large desks and now there is enough space for the wet felting work, for the dry work (mainly embroidery), for stocking of the materials and also for photography. I used to make wet felting courses here for 4-6 students.

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

I knew that good photos are essentials for online selling, but I needed time to realize what it means a really good photo. My husband’s hobby was photography, so I have a good Nikon camera for this purpose.

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

If you sell outside the USA, which is I think the main market of Etsy, you have to find a niche market and offer a unique product at excellent quality on it. Usually people prefer the local market, so you have to stand out to get their attention.
I think that natural, environment friendly, eco are the future’s tags, so maybe it worth to develop products with these qualities.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

Sports and travelling. I love running in the forest and travel to the sea. We lived one year on the tiny island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea and we usually return there.

What is your favorite quote?

Fall Is The Favorite Season Of Cristal From DesignsbyCristal

DesignsbyCristal

 1. What is your favorite season and why?

Fall is my favorite season. I love fall because after the hot and humid summers in GA this cool and crisp weather is a welcome feeling. I also love the fall because I can visit Stone Mountain Park or any of the mountains to see the beautiful colors in different hues of red, yellow and orange from all the trees changing.
There is one mountain my kids and I walk up called Kennesaw Mountain National Park and you can stand on top of the look out station and view all the beautiful colors for miles and miles with the city of Atlanta in the backdrop!

2. What season is it now where you live? Have you seen a visible sign of the season changing?

Right now in GA we are still in the summer season. Although in 12 days Fall is supposed to start but with 91 degree temps expected over the next 10 days it would be hard to tell. The only thing that tells me Fall is upon us is the morning sun is coming up earlier than before and a few mornings have been kind of cool which I love.

3. What item in your shop represents your favorite season and the story behind it?

This dog bandana is one of my items that represents the fall for me. In GA everybody seems to love this season as you can see many places already putting out their decor. I have friends who are even decorating the inside of their homes with fall decor! I can’t wait to start driving around neighborhoods to see their beautiful fall displays of pumpkins, hay, scarecrows and all the pretty foliage that represents our fall season.

4. What seasonal traditions are celebrated in your part of the world?

In GA we celebrate with fall/harvest festivals every single weekend!! You will find them at churches, parks, and even quite a few farms. I attend about 3 or 4 as a vendor and get my booth dressed up in fall decor to go along with the warm atmosphere. The others we just go as a family to enjoy all the festivities each one has to offer.

Summer Is The Favorite Season Of Margie From ZenCatPottery

ZenCatPottery

1. What is your favorite season and why?

Summer! I grew up in S. California and love the beach and warm weather. Flip flops are my favorite footwear. I dislike wearing a lot of clothing and being cold!

2. What season is it now where you live? Have you seen a visible sign of the season changing?

It is still summer, but things are beginning to move into Fall. The nights are getting colder and the days are getting shorter. The other day, I saw a tree whose leaves were beginning to change! It made me sad, but the person I was with was very happy (she loves Fall)!

3. What item in your shop represents your favorite season and the story behind it?

The Lemon Yellow Fruit Juicer in my shop represents summer. It is bright and cheerful. It can be used to make lemonade in the summer. Growing up we had a lemon tree in our back yard. During the summer, it was always full of lemons. My mom used to make pitchers of lemonade for us to drink on hot Los Angeles summer days!

This juicer can be used all year round to squeeze lemons, oranges and limes.

4. What seasonal traditions are celebrated in your part of the world?

I live in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Summer here is filled with outdoor activities: hiking, camping, swimming, biking etc. But I sure do miss the beach!

Trending On Social – #CIJParty 2018

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

I am fascinated by trends. Are you? There are weather trends, work place trends, business trends, job trends, food trends, real estate trends, hair trends, fashion trends color trends and so on.

The definition of a trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. In college I took several classes on trends. I remember distinctly studying pre peak – peak – post peak timelines. I find trends intriguing. They pique my curiosity.

Trends unite us. Give us a common ground. A connecting point.

Today during the #CIJParty 2018 let’s discover what the team has trending on social media!

Please join us in welcoming Donna of Treasures From The Lake, our featured member!

Treasures From The Lake

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Donna and I live in NE Ohio. close to Lake Erie. I am married, and have one daughter who is an RN at a big Children’s Hospital. And I have two grandchildren (4 and 8 months), who I watch a few days a week. We have been collecting beach glass and other items for around 4 years. Prior to that we used to collect shells when we vacationed in South Florida. I have always loved the beach.

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

I opened shop two years ago in June. After collecting all the beach glass in many containers, my husband said that i should do something with the glass. So I began looking at tutorials on the internet, youtube, and other crafting sites. I self taught myself wire wrap techniques, that I am always trying to refine. My family encouraged me to sell the creations So after being persuaded, I decided to give it a try.

Tell us a bit about your products.

I design jewelry (necklaces, bracelets and earrings) from genuine Beach glass that I collect from Lake Erie. There are rare colors (blues, reds etc) that I will on occasion purchase from very trusted sources. I also make bookmarks, keychains and specialize in keepsake Christmas ornaments including trees, bells, and angels.

What inspires your work?

I take inspiration from many things. Sometimes it is the shape of the glass and sometimes a design pops into my head. Other times I have no idea, and the wire seems to take over and have a life of its own I work best at night when most people are sleeping Other times, the customer tells me what they have in mind as I welcome special orders.

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

Continue to refine and expand my wire techniques and expand into drilled pieces. I hope to increase sales and my customer base My goal is to have my first show this year.

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

My glass is genuine beach glass Most of it I have collected myself. But since some colors are very rare, I will purchase them from trusted sea glass seller sites to ensure quality and genuineness. Customer service is very important to me and I want each and every customer to be completely satisfied with my work. I treat customers they way I would want to be treated, and keep them informed in the order from start to finish. When I send a package, I want the customer to feel like they are opening a present, and package my designs creatively. Every purchase is accompanied with a Thank you Card and many times I send extra free gifts. You never know when they turn into extra orders.

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

I do not have a studio. That would be a dream for the business. The design table is the dining room table and my supplies and glass are in a hutch. There is also a card table with tools and beads and other supplies. Packaging supplies are under the card table in plastic bins.

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

I wish I had learned more about social media as that is a constant challenge. I am getting better at it, but being 60 puts me behind the learning curve (lol) And learn how to take better pictures. Learn about SEO. I still struggle with it.

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Learn as much as you can about setting up your shop, tag words, seo, taking pictures Don’t expect immediate success. Although oddly, I sold an item the first night, so I did think it would be. Then I waited months. I wouldn’t wait to think you know it all though, as if you did that, you might never start up. It’s a work in progress constantly.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

In the summer I love swimming at the pool And I love reading by the pool or beach. Walking the beach of course. Spending time with my dog, Abby

What is your favorite quote?

Live Laugh Love
