Let’s travel to New Zealand – Dunedin with Kaz from TangerineToes

1. What city do you live in? What makes it special?

I live in Dunedin, a small city of approximately 120k. About 20k of our population is made up of university students, so you really could call us a uni-town. Situated very near the bottom of the South Island Dunedin is a beautiful city with sandy beaches (not to mention cold ocean currents straight from Antarctica), mountains, and a natural harbour, lush farmland and fabulous Scottish Heritage architecture. That’s to name a few – of course! Rumor has it that Scottish settlers planned for Dunedin to be the new Capital City of New Zealand (about 150-200 years ago I think) so the ‘city boundary’ is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere (yes, we’ve got lots of room to grow). Dun being Scottish for South and Edin after Scotland’s proud city of Edinborough.

2. What are several places everyone visiting your country should see?

Oh, that really depends on where you’re from – different things tick different peoples boxes! New Zealand is fab for it’s scenic trails so we’ll start there. Head to Auckland – our largest city and a very popular tourist destination with plenty to do. Rotorua in the central North Island is re-known for is geothermal activity (you’ll get used to the smell, trust me). Hawkes Bay, on the East Coast of the North Island is fabulous for a relaxing foodie experience with plenty of growers and wineries (I used to live there so I guess I’m biased). Nobody wants to miss Queenstown – I don’t believe you’ll get that fabulous highland experience any where else in the world. So you might as well call there via Dunedin – you won’t be disappointed!

3.  How have the customs, traditions, geography, nature etc. inspired the items you create?

I believe it’s the architectural heritage of the place that has inspired me to go vintage. Maybe those ornate detailings are why I have fallen in love with lace? I am working on a new, handmade range of babies sheeting which will include lace, but will also be embroidered with items from nature – this is inspired by the countryside that surrounds us and the bush-covered hills I can see from my windows.

4. What are you doing this fall to drive your business in your community? Are you doing a festival or show? How do you reach out to your community?

I have only just started reaching out in my community to promote my business, and I will be starting with a letterbox leaftlet drop.
