Etsy Christmas In July Twitter
Tell us about Twitter.
Twitter is a great forum for displaying and marketing your products in 140 characters or less. You can choose specific hashtags (#) that allow people to search for specific categories. It also allows you to use pictures which capture your audience.
It is also great for networking as you can follow other Twitter users and they can follow you.
What do you find valuable about Twitter?
Since you use 140 characters or less and can add your hashtags as part of the message, it allows you to not only categorize your items so that potential customers will see them, but your message is short. You can also retweet items for each other which results in a larger organic audience.
What kind of content is most effective on Twitter?
Content can include items from your shop, Etsy updates and sale information. Each time a tweet scrolls in front of a customer, the chances of it being seen are raised exponentially. Depending on how many people others follow, you can tweet a number of times a day without being too spammy since the feed is in real-time and over 100 tweets can scroll by in a person’s feed in less than 5 minutes.
How can Twitter be part of your business strategy?
One good thing about Twitter is that you can schedule your tweets using HootSuite or any of those integrated programs to target the best time of the day for your tweets to be seen. If you have a lot of U.S. followers and you live in another country, you don’t want your tweets to be going at 2 a.m. U.S. time; no one will see them. There are so many other programs that are integrated with Twitter, it’s easy to find one that will help you reach your target audience at peak times.
Also, hashtags allow you to target your audience. If you sell vintage, you can #vintage and people who are looking for vintage can search the category. The same goes for #handmade or any other category in which you sell.
It’s important to have a social media plan. What can you achieve on Twitter?
I think Twitter allows you to brand yourself easier. You can attach your Twitter address to your Etsy store and any other social media such as Facebook or your blog. Each time you link your shop to any social media outside of Etsy, your chances of being found in a search is increased and your brand is more noticeable. Twitter allows you to reach people multiple times per day. Because your message is short and you can attach pictures, it is easy for a potential buyer to see your brand three to five times per day.
How do you develop this social media plan?
Developing a social media plan is like any other plan. You need to set a goal and work it. You also need to find ways to track whether it is bringing in business. It’s easy to spend a lot of time promoting and promoting on social media and we don’t always feel it is effective. You need to track your best hours to post and see where your referrals are coming from. Etsy has tools to help you with that and Twitter keeps tracks of retweets and likes, as well.
What is the most creative way to find new followers on Twitter?
The best way to start is to start following people who share your like interest. Then, when you have a few, retweet some of their tweets that interest you. On Twitter other people retweet your tweets when you have done so for them. The people who retweet you then reach an audience you do not have and those people see your brand and can then follow you. Also, target your hashtags, make them relevant and do not add more than one or two to your tweet or the link to your shop can get buried in the hashtags. Make your hashtags short. No one wants to read a hashtag that has 142 characters! #youknowwhatimeantoomanycharacterstoread!
How do you interact with others on Twitter?
The interaction is usually short. You retweet someone’s item but add a short personal comment such as “Great post!” or “I love this color!” or you can ask a question, but Twitter works in real-time and so many tweets come through in 5 minutes that there is not a lot of conversation. The interaction comes from tweeting and commenting on someone else’s tweet.
What else would you like to share about Twitter?
At first it can be hard to see how Twitter can benefit your Etsy business. Your picture is one of a thousand tweets that scroll through someone’s feed every day. It isn’t super personal but if used correctly it can be a great way to get your brand seen a number of times per day. It is one tool in your social media plan and it is a quick way to get your name out to hundreds if not thousands of people a day. You may only have 100 followers but if someone with 20,000 followers retweets your tweet you were just seen by 20,100 people!
