International Friendship Day: August 5th, 2018

Contributor post by Mairi from mairidesign

International Friendship Day is on 5th August. What a wonderful way to celebrate the good times you’ve shared with your friends and to show them how much you appreciate them. Spend time with those who make you laugh and support you when you’re feeling low, or maybe it’s a time to re-connect with long lost friends from school. However you celebrate, wouldn’t it be nice to get some special gifts for those you appreciate?

The CIJ team have selected some gifts that they know your friends would love.

Przemila K from CanisArtStudio says

The best friend is someone really important. This person deserves a large and valuable gift. But if you want to make a small surprise, I suggest a small oil painting. Perhaps your best friend is an animal lover or dreams about a pet or maybe not. But always a dog is a perfect symbol of friendship. A miniature oil painting will be perfect for this occasion. If you need another pet portrait, please visit my shop. You can also order a portrait from your own photos.

#CIJPopUpMarket #3 Shop – Gillian from Gillisflowers

Gillisflowers

1. What is the name of your shop and where do you look for inspiration?

My shop is Gillisflowers, it’s a kind of pun. My friends call me Gilli. I make origami flower jewellery and “Gillyflower” is a traditional name for dianthus or pinks so it all worked together. I make reference to the language of flowers in my jewellery and in that gillyflower has the meaning everlasting beauty which seems appropriate.

I look for inspiration in so many places, antique and vintage floral jewellery, historical dramas, fashion trends and of course from flowers and the wonderful colour combinations seen in nature.

2. How has your shop evolved over time?

Although I opened my shop in the later part of 2016 it was 2017 when I really started to work more seriously on it and I am now gradually reviewing and improving my listings as I learn more about selling on Etsy. I have updated the sections telling sellers more about me and worked to improve my photos, descriptions, titles and tags. I now have 114 items including designs which can be made to order. I am learning everyday and my shop will continue to evolve, grow.

3. What do you love most about your work?

My work is in many ways my therapy. I started origami after bring advised by occupational therapy to find a way to exercise my fingers. I have become disabled over the past 4 years but when I am in the “zone”, or when selling my jewellery at a craft market I can forget about the things I can’t do or find challenging and rejoice in what I can do. It provides creative stimulation and I love developing a new design or technique…I get a real buzz from that. It keeps my brain busy as I learn more and work out ways to make what I want to make. I love the sense of achievement when I look at something I have made. It is my passion and my joy. I love it!

4. What motivating music do you listen to? Share your playlist that gets and keeps you going!

I can’t listen to music when working. When I listen to music I get so caught up in it I can’t do anything else.

5. What book are you reading right now and where is your favorite place to read?

I love reading and always have books to read loaded on my kindle. I have just finished ” The keeper of lost things” which I loved and recommend and for a complete change I’m now reading an Ann Cleeves detective novel. I have problems sleeping so I also enjoy audio books and I am know listening to one of my favourites, Pride and Prejudice. I read most in my very comfy recliner chair but also when weather permits in my garden.

Tree Decorations – #CIJParty 2017

Post contributor from Julie at EveryoneLovesGifts0

When it comes to Christmas time everyone loves to decorate their tree. I know when I was younger I was not allowed to decorate the tree as that was my Mum’s job and something she loved to do. More so the tree had to be prefect so no little fingers are allowed.

Now I have my own daughter, she decorates the tree with my husband but they always need my approval to see if I like it!

With this blog I thought it would be a good idea to get a feel of other Christmas tree decorations out there, let your imagination run wild and have fun with it. After all, Christmas is a time to family and fun.

First up is my Christmas Tree (pleas excuse the background this was before we decorated). I have always had a fake green tree yet I liked the look of a black tree. It is usual and not something you would consider at Christmas, yet I love the look of a black tree.
That being said as it is black I wanted silver and white to go with the tree so the decorations stand out. So that being said I went with silver glitter decorations and white feather boas to make it look like snow as falling. To complete the look I went with white twinkle lights. (PS, excuse the Christmas hat at the top, my daughter insisted that stays).

My Christmas Tree Decoration

I love this Christmas tree, it looks classic yet modern at the same time with twists of ‘snow’ at the bottom. I love all the different Christmas decorations that hang off the branches, this tree feels magical to me.

Fun Tree Decoration

Although this is a real Christmas tree, the decorations are simple, to the point while looking classy at the same time. The colour scheme stays the same with gold and red decorations while you can see the twinkling white light in the tree.

Classic Tree Decoration

Decorations that feel fun and magical for the Children. I love this look of decoration, I know this may not be everyone’s cup of tea but if your children have a little Christmas tree themselves, why not look for a decoration like this? With lights behind this decoration it is sure to make a magical tree for them.

Fun Decorations for Kids

I love decorations like this. On a Christmas tree you can see it is bright colours, yet with glitter snowflakes on the balls it gives it a warm/cool feeling inside as well. This on a tree with similar decorations would go perfect together.

My daughter and I found this figurine vase at an estate sale. Normally, I would not buy an outhouse to list in our Shop! But, I thought it was funny that the bear was surprising the man inside and suspected someone else might appreciate the humor. I spent hours on-line researching and trying to find out when and where it was made–with no luck. Then it hit me–the guy inside looked like Teddy Roosevelt in his Rough Rider days! Bingo! The vase was made in Germany during the 1920s–vintage political humor!

My pod pendant is definitely different + daring! It is my interpretation of a milkweed pod when it bursts open to release its seeds. It is a piece jewellery for a woman who isn’t afraid of bold statements and likes artisan work!

This necklace is a one of a kind handmade piece of jewelry made by me. The lovely large orange Carnelian and yellow Citrine faceted rondelle gemstone beads make it look elegant! But I also think the bright, cheerful colors accented by the Sterling Silver sun pendant and clasp look somewhat tribal!  The suns remind me of jewelry that the ancient Aztecs would have worn as they ascended the many steps of their stone temples to lead their tribe in worship ceremonies! There are also matching earrings in my shop with small Sterling Silver sun charms! This is definitely a statement piece for the woman looking for something unique and bright to give her outfit that special pop of color!

I think all my items are unique. Everyone is so creative. If you live in the USA, then you know this is an election year. So, some time back I decided to make a variety of red, white and blue items to show my patriotic side. This is an acrylic painting, with an eagle, all done in red, white and blue. Perfect for a boy’s room, nursery or playroom. It is on sale too!

Oh how much fun! I kind of dare to be different with all my jewelry but this one sort of put me a little over the top. This is an anatomically correct bleeding human heart. The heart is made out of PMC and I used natural cut rubies in the ends of all the veins and arteries to make it look like blood. This is a really unique one of a kind piece of art.

Treasury Challenge Winner June – madmaxshop

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

On Etsy many shop owners curate treasuries. A treasury is a curated shop gallery comprised  of 16 items from any shop.  Most of the time they are done by theme, color or anything you can imagine.

The Christmas in July team has challenges to create treasuries centered on themes of our choosing. We then pick a winner based on views, creativity and the like.

The June winner is madmaxshop who loves vintage fashion of all kinds!

1 and 2. What made you start your shop on Etsy and what got you into Vintage?

A love for fashion. Upon realizing the younger generation’s appreciation and demand for vintage had increased in the last decade I decided to open a shop offering unique and one-of-a kind vintage items that could not be found anywhere else. New York is a great city and it is an ultimate resource for the finest in vintage fashion and accessories.

il_170x135.470807107_8wt4

3. What Era of Vintage appeals to you most?

Despite the hardships of WWII, the 1940’s were still a brilliant decade for fashion. Joan Crawford’s shoulder pads…Christian Dior’s New Look…statement jewels…power dressing.

Both men and women retailored outfits leftover from the 30’s. Remake what’s old (upcycle)…just like today. As more American men were being drafted, women at home remade their left behind clothing into slim-fitting pants, blouses, and jackets…Katherine Hepburn’s timeless style. Less was the norm and no more unnecessary undergarments. Shoulder pads added interest to the silhouette and as decades followed, 40s fashion made a repeat performance influencing fashion in the late 70s and early 80s…Joan Collins, Dynasty!

4. What, if any crafts do you like to do or would love to try?

I would like to try jewelry design with inspiration evolving from the vintage mid-century statement jewels. Bare, curving bouquets, bows and fans of the 1940s and 1950s. This style is known as Retro Modern.
