Dorm Decor with Major Style: Astronomy, History, Art and Biology

Astronomy

You’ll be seeing stars (and looking like an outer-space insider) when you hang an arty wall decal showing off a lesser-known constellation. A handmade moon phase pennant is a cool twist on school spirit, and you’ll want to study (okay, nap) next to this moon-shaped salt-rock nightlight. And for those galaxy-gazers with an appreciation for interiors, there’s a vintage mid-century chair inspired by Atomic Age design.

Here at Christmas in July team we wanted to know do you have any items related to Astronomy and what the story behind the item is.

Ina from InaSudjana says:

What better way to hang this pastel Star dream catcher in the dorm OR anywhere in your hallway really.

With 3 stars hanging down from the hoop, it’ll just be perfect for your reading corner (of course for reading and/or napping)

Who isn’t in awe of the stars, moon, planets & night sky? The “space race” was such a dream for so many to be involved in! This Men’s Tie features all those fun things, including UFO’s! Watch out! One may be headed to your neck of the woods!

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese states:

I remember back in my uni days going to a ‘out of space’ dress up party. These paper star confetti would have been great to use to decorate the table. So if you are having a dorm party, why not use this star confetti!!

History

Get inspired by history’s greats: Write a treatise — or just a term paper — under a lamp modeled on those Abe Lincoln owned and prop up a pint-sized portrait of ground-breaker Eleanor Roosevelt for daily motivation. Come sundown (or later, if you insist on using electric lights), bed down under an antique quilt made from upcycled sports banners or an embroidered patchwork throw featuring the faces of all the U.S. Presidents who governed before you were born (it only goes through Reagan).

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio says:

This is a pencil pouch/gadget bag created from a photograph we took of the remnants of the Berlin Wall that was dismantled in 1989. Artists have expressed their feelings about freedom, politics and culture on the remaining sections of the wall. It is now called the East Side Gallery and makes up the largest open-air art gallery in the world.

We love old books that deal with History – especially Presidents! This is a fun graphic book about Abe Lincoln. Thumb through the pages and reacquaint yourself with our 16th President!

Art

We know, you’d rather paint your own mural on those bland beige walls, but that’s not going to fly with the RA. Instead, try a watercolor-inspired wallpaper mural that you can (carefully!) tack up and remove at year’s end. Complement it with an abstract bud vase, a vibrant visual guide to the world’s great art museums, and color-splashed bedding worthy of Jackson Pollock.

Stock Lane Studio  from StockLaneStudio says:

Here is a water fountain photograph set in Paris. It is one of my favorite spots to rest, have a coffee and people watch. Nikki De St. Phalle created the bold and bright modern art water fountain sculpture in Place Igor Stravinsky.

Biology

A microscope-turned-lamp will shed some light on your first-semester exams, while a botany-illustration pillow is cute on the cellular level. You can even experiment with small space gardening in your free time, thanks to a repurposed-beaker terrarium set.

Amy Spock  from BeadsandThreadsbyAmy says:

You can never have too many towels when you are off to college. Why not show off your interest in Biology and Ocean Life with a personalized, embroidered ocean theme towel set?

Florals

Granny florals are making a comeback.

Here at Christmas in July team we wanted to know do you have any items related to Florals and what the story behind the item is.

Ina from InaSudjana says:

This made-to-match floral headband was designed originally to match Jennifer Paganelli’s Caravale Arcade fabric series.

It was designed as part of the Facebook Collaboration for a Cause 2015 Auction where handmade sellers formed groups to donate money raised to selected charities.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns states:

I have lots of floral themed products in my shop, but I particularly like this daisy necklace. It is breezy and great for spring – and very hippie!! Maybe that’s why I like it!

Sherri from ButterflyFeetDigital discusses:

I was experimenting with creating vases in my digital art, and added flowers and a few ladybugs, and created this fun, colorful set of printable mini note cards with the designs. I still use them myself once in a while when I need a mini note card.

Sue and Misty from shabbyshopgirls says:

There are so many uses for floral sheets! We picked these up as we thought that they would be really pretty used as multi layered among other florals on a bed or re-purposed into pillows, slip covers, curtains, or clothing! We deal in textiles mainly, and love to purchase floral items!

Ginny C from GRCTreasures stated:

Saw this great table cover at a yard sale, the woman selling it said lots of family members had used this for years but it was time to pass it on. It reminded me so much of my kitchen decor in the late seventies when my daughter was born. Lots of happy memories there and there is something so cheerful about the colors, still bright after all this time.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese says:

I love flowers and floral things! When I saw a paper pad of florals I just could not resist getting it. I then had to think of something to make with it and thought these envelopes would be perfect!

Sue and Misty from shabbyshopgirls states:

One of the things we LOVE to collect is vintage Cookbooks! We have many available, but this is one of our favorites and a classic that every bride must have received for her wedding from the 40’s to the 60’s and is still popular today! If you don’t have a copy of The Joy of Cooking, your kitchen is just not complete!

Arlene from ThisandThatCrafter says:

A classic and fun way to eat at home is to BBQ. It is a great way to have very tasty food and on hot days you don’t have to heat up the kitchen with cooking. A great way to eat at home instead of going out on a hot day. Here is a great vintage book on Betty Crocker Best Recipes for Grilling. This book is from 1989 and has lots of great recipes in it.

If you make a cake at home, you have to be able to store it and why not in this vintage aluminum cake carrier. My mother had one similar to this and she used to bake a cake from scratch every Friday. This caught my eye at a yard sale and brought back all those good memories of fresh baked cakes.

What could be more iconic of the days of home cooked meals then a piece of vintage Pyrex from the 1940’s?

Outdoor Activities

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

Outdoor activities are something most of us love to do, no matter the season. There are many different activities we can participate in including: skiing, walking, swimming and many more.

Christmas in July Team wanted to know what do you like to do outside?

Here is what some of our members told us!

Gari Anne  from beadloverskorner says:

One of the activities I always loved when I was younger (and still do love) is going to the beach and hunting for shells, sand dollars, sharks teeth, and any other treasures of the sea. I created these earrings to portray the many gifts of the sea and emote the feeling of calm that can be felt while walking along the beach hunting for treasure from the ocean.

There is nothing quite like being on or near the water on a summer’s day. Stick your toes in the water, breathe in the fresh cool air or jump in a boat (with approval and a life vest of course) and off you go to an adventure. You see things differently from the water.

Ina from InaSudjana explains:
With spring approaching here in Australia, we can find more and more butterflies on clear days. They are such gentle creatures and oh-so-free. My little girl loves chasing her butterflies every time we have the chance to go outdoors – even as simple as having our picnic lunch at the front lawn!
il_170x135.632818384_6qmv
BBQing! My husband is a master in this field and always looks forward to the summer and warmer weather for smoking & grilling different food for outdoor picnics and family gatherings.

No matter where you live it looks like there are many types of activities to get you outdoors and active!!
