Let Wedding Season Begin

Contributor post by Nancy from JaysBoutiqueCrochet

Wedding season is just around the corner! Whether it is your big day or you are helping a friend or family member plan their wedding, we know how overwhelming the details can be. Luckily, your Christmas in July team is here to help, with this compilation of beautiful and unique products that can be the perfect finishing touch for that memorable day.

We would love to hear what Etsy items you have used in the past for weddings, or what wedding-geared items you have in your shop! But in the meantime, here are some products from our team members that will make your wedding that much more beautiful and meaningful!

It all starts long before the actual wedding day, of course, and StockLaneStudio has you covered. What better way to ask your bridal party to be a part of your special day than with these fun invitations? The owner says:

“I absolutely love weddings – just a wonderful feeling of hope and happiness and giddy blissful love. I really enjoyed designing SLS’s pink bubbly wedding party cards. I think they present a fun way to ask loved ones to be party of the wedding party. And apparently I’m not the only one. Here’s a nice comment from one happy bride:

“Loved this! Such a cute, different way to ask my best friend to play an important role in my wedding. Thank you!!!”‘

Pam from PearlsVintagebyPam offers us the perfect petticoat – an old-fashioned yet undeniably fun touch! This particular petticoat is made for a slim bride but seems to be adjustable and flexible regarding the amount of flare! She says:

“This is a great Slip/Petticoat Undergarment for the Bride. It Flares as much or little as need be. It has never been worn!”

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeSupplies suggested her flower acrylic beads as the perfect supply to have on hand during wedding season, and how right is she! These beads are not only inexpensive, but they are versatile and match just about everything! She says:

“These clear flower beads are perfect to embellish wedding or bridesmaids dresses, table decor, wedding bunting, bouquets and jewelry….”

WillowValleyVintage offers many beautiful decorations for your wedding day, including figurines, tissue paper novelties, and more! I love that all of these items are not necessarily expected to be at a wedding (no one would notice if they were not there) but they are a surprising and lovely touch that show a particular attention to detail and a true desire to make this day perfect. The owner shared with us this lovely stereoview card:

“This is a stereoview card from the early 1900s. It has a 3D effect when used with a stereoscope–similar to View-Master toys of today. We love all the pretty details and guests waiting in the background of the scene!”

No discussion of weddings would be complete without a mention of the wedding dress itself! Cynthia from StraylightVintage offers an absolutely stunning array of clothes, but obviously the shop section we are most interested in here is the Vintage Wedding Dress section! Cynthia shared this darling (and incredibly affordable!!) wedding dress with a personal story:

“Sweet wedding dress worn one time ….by my aunt in the early 1950’s.”

Lizzy and Boo from LizzysBibsandBobs thinks every bride should have a beautiful pair of Vintage Faux Pearl Clip Earrings, an ideal accessory for the retro Bride! These lovely earrings remind me of the ones worn by my Aunt on her wedding day back in 1962 – I was her Flower Girl!

Love birds are often given to brides and grooms as a symbol of true love. Dorota from YOrnaments explains how

Love Birds marry for life – that is why they are a perfect symbol of harmonious marriage.

I love watching the birds nesting in my garden. They inspire me to create my Love Birds Ornaments. I am hoping that a pair of my birds will fly to decorate some rustic wedding table … and maybe later become a little ornamental keepsake for Bride and Groom.

I use beautiful textiles to inject patterns and colors into my felt creations. The photos were taken in my garden. Happy Nesting!

Some couples who are religious in nature might think about giving their special people these Love Scripture Cards made by Sarah from BellaBoutique23. They have been used by several brides that have given them to guests for their wedding favors. They include scriptures about love and on the back they have a special prayer that goes with the scripture. They also make a nice gift for the Bride and Groom. I have Faith, Hope, and Love themed scripture cards and put together they would make a lovely unique gift. “And Now Abideth Faith, Hope, and Love, these three, but the Greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13.

There is always a need for  ceramic square white dishes made by Dawn from DeeDeeDeesigns. These are ideal for weddings in many ways…. they can be used as candle holders on tables, bridesmaids gifts, parents of the bride & groom gifts, guest gifts and even name holders.

As gifts they will be a lasting reminder to the recipient and can be personalized if desired.

We must not forget our destination wedding loving couples! Connie from Bungalow42 says Beach wedding perfect!

It is said that the color coral gives a sense of calm and warmth. Two things I would definitely recommend for all brides!

These lightweight pearl earrings are so light and airy that they appear be floating. The luminous light coral freshwater nugget pearls will make any bride glow with happiness on her special day.

And finally, one of the items in my own shop, JaysBoutiqueCrochet, that I can’t resist sharing because of its sweet story! A few years ago a soon-to-be bride approached me asking if I would make her some ivory slippers to wear in her wedding! I was absolutely honored to have my creations featured on her special day – but it got even better! She loved the slippers I sent her, and messaged me again asking if I would make slippers for each of her bridesmaids, with buttons to match their bridesmaid dresses. Of course, I was thrilled and sent off eight more pairs of ivory slippers! Here are some of them (can you pick out the ones meant for the bride?)

We dearly love seeing your wedding-themed products, and especially hearing your personal stories! Thank you to all who contributed, and please feel free to comment with wedding products in your store or stories of how Etsy products were featured in weddings that you have been part of!

The Great Outdoors

Contributor Post by  Sheila and Shannon from BeadyEyedBird

There are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors! We asked our Teamies what they love to do outside, and what their shops offer so others can do the same. Here’s what they told us:

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio said:

Nature is such a great source of inspiration for me. The starry night sky, the greenery of the forest and the salt of the sea all snap my creativity into production. I really love my visits to the sea. My kids can be as loud as they want with the ocean waves crashing around them. They can run and get dirty, bury themselves in the sand and then wash it all off in the water. They remind me that I once did that too and coax me out into the wild. We all feel the forces of nature that are greater than us, wind on our faces and salt on our tongues and powerful waves stinging our skin. There is no better place to make me feel so grateful to be alive. This inspirational quote is a reminder of that. And yes, those are my kids and their cousins, doing what kids do best, making their mark on the sandy beaches of the Oregon Coast.

We spent many vacations with our kids and dog at Southwick Beach on Lake Ontario. We stayed in Our Red Coleman Tent. When my Premie Daughter was born and the hospital told us to take a break for a weekend we stayed on an electric camp site so I could Pump my Milk to keep it going for my return. She is now 30 and in excellent health.

Well we used Sleeping Bags. I am selling a new but vintage Marlboro Sleeping Bag that my sister gave ma as a Gift. She was an Avid Smoker and collected Marlboro gifts.

I love nature, period. Whether it’s working in my garden, watching birds at the lake or hiking in the wilderness — I enjoy it and couldn’t live without it. And then in the evening we sit around the campfire (yes, I do love to camp and sleep in a tent) and write into my journal. This is when inspiration hits and I can write about nature, my thoughts, my feelings and adventures in a beautiful handmade journal.

Tell us about yourself.

I love art, travel, meeting new people, learning about different cultures and my new home in New Mexico. I’m just starting to paint again. My education is in fine art and teaching. I’ve traveled to and lived in many places in the U.S. and around the world. I have a wonderful, supportive husband who likes to think up interesting things to do. I’ve always loved vintage clothing and am so happy to have work that is also a lot of fun!slv

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

I opened my business on Valentine’s day, February 14th, 2011. A family member, who owns consignment stores encouraged me to do so. Actually I started with an Etsy photo shop called Plum Lane photos, which I think lasted about a year and was full of shots my husband and I took on our travels. Then together we started CTMercantile, which included all kinds of vintage, including home decor. Eventually I decided to concentrate on vintage apparel.

I love finding old treasures, the beauty, color and craftsmanship of vintage and antique clothing is often amazing.slv2

Tell us a bit about your products.

I find vintage every where I go! It is a giant treasure hunt in fascinating antique stores, thrift shops and online and brick and mortar vintage whole sellers. One of my most interesting sources was a dancer who was  selling portions of a huge collection of clothing, dating to the early 1900’s. I clean and mend everything before it goes to its new owner. I sell both women’s and men’s vintage apparel.

What inspires your work?

I love the beautiful workmanship of textiles from the past.

icm_fullxfull-101778658_a0tro10qz88cwggs4csg

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

This year? I need to get massive amounts of inventory ready to list! I am planning to get my blog started again and to get much more involved in social media in connection with my shop.slv3

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

There are many wonderful vintage sellers on etsy and elsewhere, so this is not an easy question. Like these sellers I always consider the customer and do my very best to send their garment (which is often very old) in the very best possible condition, by cleaning and mending if necessary and as quickly as possible. I research to find out as much as I can and only sell true vintage clothing.slv4

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

We recently moved to a new location and I am in the process of organizing things in one large area.slv5

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

Perhaps the importance of balance. I have learned now to set hours and as much as possible to work within the time I’ve established, consistently. It can be too easy to let work you love take over all aspects-  time with family, friends, even sleep time. Although sometimes 2 AM can be a good time to work it is important to know when to stop. On the other hand it is important as much as possible to work consistently so that your shop will thrive.slv6

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

I believe good photos are one of the most important things, as well as excellent customer service.slv7

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I love to explore our new home of New Mexico. There are festivals, wonderful walks, downtown music and farmer’s markets and so many friendly people! And of course that amazing sky! I also love photography, gardening and have started to paint again.slv8

What is your favorite quote?

I have so many I love. The most recent is
“Success likes to find you working.”slv9

Where can people find out more about your business?

I have recently joined Instagram and also have a Pinterest and Facebook account
all with the name straylightvintage.slv10

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Work hard but keep having fun!slv11

Hi I’m kind of new to the team, I joined last week, but have been incredibly busy listing new items, and now editing many for the CIJ Event. New for me this year will be Christmas ornaments – I have ordered supplies but they haven’t come yet – I am hopeful that they arrive before the event kicks off.
I sell mostly supplies, but I am also a jeweler and a Lapidary. I cut most of my own stones in my studio, and have recently purchased a diamond drill press so that I can make beads from my cabochons.
Etsy is my “Full Time” job now for three years, and I’ll never go back to working the grind, I LOVE it!!!

Made to Order Mermaid Tail

Hello
I joined the team early in the month, but have been on holidays before I had a chance to introduce myself.
I opened my Etsy Shop 3 years ago. initially I only sold handmade jewellery, but over the years I have added original art and art prints to my shop.
Presently I have a great range of products available.
My latest additions are art prints from ink drawings. These black and white drawings are dynamic and capture the movement of the subject.
This drawing of two girls dancing is one of my favourites.

Hi all,
We’re so looking forward to taking part in our first ever Christmas In July (decking the halls as we type).
At Tread & Pedals we (Em and Ivan) handcraft fun and functional designs through re-purposing old bicycle parts. One of our favourite items would have to be our Cog & Chain Bottle Opener.
Our Bicycle Cog & Chain Bottle Opener is an essential for any bike or beer loving man’s pocket. The bike chain is silver soldered to the cog to form an extremely strong bottle opener. The bike chain is still movable so it easily fits inside your pocket, attach it to your key chain – so you are always ready to enjoy beer o’clock and pop open those ice-cold drinks.

What One Tip Do You Have For Those Starting An Online Business?

Contributor post by Sheila from BeadyEyedBird

We asked our CIJ ‘veterans’ to share their most important advice for starting a new online business — to help out anyone who’s just getting started. Here’s what they said.

Well, I am certainly still learning, but I see improvements and more sales in my shop every day, so I will add something that has helped me along the way (just one??!!):
Have a good and creative VOCABULARY.
With an online business, getting found in the great wide web is essential, and great SEO is key. Once you have a product that people want to buy, you have to bring them to your shop. Use key words that shoppers use.

Sometimes that means thinking like a shopper, not an artist. For example, for paintings or fine art photography, save an artistic title for the listing description and use descriptors, style and shopping terms for the titles and tags. My carousel photograph reminds me of my childhood, so I could title it: Return to childhood. I would use that in a gallery show or as part of the photograph signature. But that title is too abstract so I would not put that in the title or tags because most people don’t use ‘return’ to search for fine art photography or carousels. Instead I try to think like a buyer: Who wants the photo and what would they use it for? I had one shopper comment that they found one photograph by searching for ‘picture’ instead of using ‘photography’ or photo.

I like to use phrases that combine highly used words with words specific to the listings. Designers and new parents, for example, would search for ‘nursery decor’ or apartment decor’, 2 highly used phrases. But then using ‘red nursery decor’ or ‘girls boys nursery decor’ would increase my chances of getting found.

I like to use EtsyRank (etsyrank.com) to get keyword help (use the KEYWORD TOOL)
The site has a list of the most popular colors at the moment COLOR TREND). (the word ‘gold’ is clearly the most searched color word according to EtsyRank with 6 million+). I would use ‘red’ as a key title and tag word because that has 2+ million searches). Then I would also add more specific terms like the specific location of the carousel .
I would also use the synonyms for carousel like merry-go-round or merrygoround.

carousel

Carousel photograph, Red nursery decor, carnival ride picture, Paris France merry-go-round photo, apartment dorm art, children’s kids room

Aubrey Campie from Videnda says

My number one tip is to treat it as you would a regular 9-5 job. Put in the hours, but don’t over do it. Have goals in mind and have a friend, spouse, etc. keep you accountable to that goal. Working for yourself, by yourself, in your own home can be a big challenge, but once you have a work routine and goals set in mind, you will see the results start coming in.

My biggest tip would be to set time boundaries early. Having an internet business means that you will be accessible to people all over the world, at any given time of the day. For the most part people are patient and understand that life goes on outside of your business. But there are a few people out there that try to monopolize your time.

Be nice, be bold, be brave! And let the fun begin!

My one tip…
Create a Business Plan – jotting it all down on paper makes it real – stick to the plan and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. As a part of this be sure to create a list of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and with a Timeline). Refer back to these goals and be sure to pat yourself on the back as you achieve them. Remember to set the bar high – you’ll be surprised how high you can jump.

Oh and one more… believe in yourself.

My biggest tip is something that was learned after taking a business class.

When creating your items and starting a business, look at the market and see what’s already out there and ask yourself “what can I make that is (somewhat) unique?”

The reason why I recommend you ask this question is because I didn’t and it cost me time and money to figure out what I wanted to sell on Etsy.

When I first started out, I wanted to make wine charms. While I was able to make some cute sets, I really had no plan on how to SELL those wine charms.

They were not unique in any way. I didn’t make the charms myself, everything was bought and assembled, which means that my wine charms, while cute, were not really breaking through an already saturated market.

Then I moved on to jewelry. Again, an already saturated market on Etsy meant that I was going to have to really come up with something spectacular in order to get some sales. And while I did manage to get an item sold here and there, nothing about my jewelry was interesting and creative enough to devote my entire shop to. It is something that took a long time to admit was a failure and that’s okay.

What I realized is that I was chasing my tail, essentially, by making products that were just like everyone else. It wasn’t until I started incorporating graphic design and eventually moving over to mostly digital design and art that I really found success in selling things that were TRULY my own.

It all took a simple question from my business professor that changed everything. When I explained my business plan of selling generic crafts on Etsy, she turned to me, without hesitation and said, “wine charms are a pretty common item that you can find just about everywhere. So why would I buy wine charms from you?”

I didn’t have an answer.

Unless you can answer that question, keep working and you will find your niche. Everyone has the space on Etsy to be creative as you want to be, it’s just a matter of finding that one thing that you excel at above the rest.

While I’m not a great artist, it is nice finding success at selling things that are definitely more my style.

Good luck and don’t worry! It’s rough but it all comes together with time and experience.

My tip is ~ Be flexible!

When I first started I was listing old books without covers and adding lace or ribbon ~ it wasn’t an original idea , but I was selling them and they were so pretty and I took pride in each set. Well, there is so much of that here now, its hard to stand out !

Then I had a request for the books to have COLOR ~ I was flexible and have developed my own way of painting and distressing them instead ~ Sure, those are being duplicated by others now too .

BUT, it just means I need to once again , be flexible and change things up !

Always be willing to evolve and push past the comfort zone of what you know and HAVE FUN!

I have learned that a good work, life, and creativity balance is important. Keeping things in perspective keeps you from getting frustrated, LOL!

Promoting , etc. can take up a lot of time and if you allow it to, take away from what you enjoy doing if you make handmade items!

Taking good, clear photos so customers can really get a look at your items and what they might buy is important!

I see a lot of fuzzy, far away, small, and fake looking photos on Etsy. I will still buy something that I like but others might not.

I think it’s OK to have some color and something pretty in the background to offset the item and make your shop interesting to shop in for customers is good too.

If, for instance, I walk into a store and it’s all white and boring I would probably not want to stay as long and look around!

Some items need white backgrounds but it’s OK to be creative and have fun with photos!

I recently ordered some natural shampoos, lotions, etc. from a teamie and really enjoyed her shop as she has her products in settings that remind you of a lovely spa rather than just plain bottles against a white background!

Being friendly and having great customer service is really key too! Thanking customers and letting them know shipping details, etc. and that you acknowledge that they have ordered from you.

And, tags and titles are important for you to be found. First 4 tags should reflect what is in title.

The first phrase is important and should be simply what the item is such as a red ball, not cute or vintage, or on sale red ball. Then after you can say something like red ball with fringe or Smith’s vintage fringed red ball, etc.

People tend to search for simply what an item is.

Make your shop more interesting by filling it all out such as photos, icons, policies, about, and a bit about yourself and what you do!

Hope some of this helps!

The one tip I would give is to be proud of what you’re making and stand behind it! If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, then nobody else will. Last year I took a leap of faith and starting creating gift tags and mini greeting cards after 3 years of working on typography prints and photography, and now they are my best-selling section.

My tip is follow your heart if you love what your creating others will also.

I love doing custom designs and my shop is like no other on Etsy. My door decor is unique and one of kind designs.

Each one will be your alone even if I paint a 100 of the same design it will be a bit different from the one before it.
