Chic Children

Contributor post from Cindy of Cynhumphrey

We often hear about chic clothing, chic ladies, and chic decorating. Seldom do we bring that down to a child’s level though. That is exactly what we’re going to do here at Christmas in July for this post.

According to the dictionary, the meaning of the word chic is fashionable style. What child does not have their own fashionable style? This is something that allows the child to show the world that they are an individual and this is what makes them happy.

I think the most important thing about being chic is not that it has to be elegant, but rather that it is remembered. It’s something stylish that the child likes. It could pertain to clothing, accessories and even decor. It doesn’t have to be strictly for the females either!

The members of Christmas in July know how to show off chic items for children! Here are a few treasures on display in some of our talented shops.

Judy Merashoff from JAMsCraftCloset says

What could be chicer than my handmade and hand painted kids’ wall art? Girl Power…DIVA…I’m not Spoiled. I’m a Princess…

Gari Anne from BeadLoversKorner says

Little girls will be excited to wear this chic bracelet with zoo animal beads and then have fun collecting and adding new beads to it. Just like adult charm bead bracelets, this children’s bracelet can be easily changed. The locker bead makes the bracelet adjustable as new beads are added or as the little girl grows.

Check out this super-girly and super-chic ballet dancer quilt pattern!

Barbara of MermaidsHatbox says:

Little girls love hats. So, I sometimes make little hats for my shop or markets. That is always so much fun for me. This beautiful beige baby/toddler hat is a perfect accessory for any little girl. It has three hat bands for change. The hat bands are removable so it is possible to move the bow or flower into the correct position. Also the “bare” hat can be adorned with your own designs. It’s also possible to use the hat bands as head bands.

Sue   from Susy Sew and Sew says:

A bit of baby chic. My hairdresser was having a baby and as she had a huge dog she loved, I made her a bib with a cute appliqued dog on the front. She loved it and I loved making it so I made some for the shop. I love the process of seeing the faces get character as they are sewn. This one features a sweet brown bear face and is perfect for either a boy or a girl.

Stock Lane Studio from Stock Lane Studio says:

Our Starry Night Sky wall art series makes for chic girls and boys room decor, and this Shine Bright Printable is one of our best sellers. Inspired by our frequent night dog walks, sitting in open fields gazing at meteor showers, and memories of glow-in-the-dark star decals on childhood ceilings, every twinkle and every inch of our Night Sky background was hand designed. SLS’s Shine Bright is offered as printed or printable art.

Susan from SSFDesigns says:

A few years ago I was asked to make a dress for a little girl that matched the dress of her favorite vintage doll. This was so fun to make and the little girl was so happy to be dressed up like her doll!

Fabulous Flowers

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

Fall is officially here, and it’s the time I plant some of my favorite bulbs so I can get that thrill of colorful flowers in the spring. It reminds me of all the joy planting, growing, viewing and displaying flowers brings to me. It makes me wonder about your flowery favorites. Our Christmas in July team members shared these items and stories.

Judy Merashoff from JAMsCraftCloset says:

I don’t like to plant or grow flowers, but I do love anything that is floral. I believe flowers brighten every day and anything that holds flowers or has flowers on it.

I found several vintage bottles at an estate sale. I kept looking at them and wondered what to do with them. I decided instead of selling them as is, I would paint flowers on them. This is what I came up with.

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit says:

We pick fresh flowers from our yard throughout the year and use them in our photography for our bridal party and couple’s monogrammed gifts in our shop. We love the addition of the flowers in the images and love including a little part of our home in our work.

willowvalleyvintage from WillowValleyVintage says:

We enjoy finding vintage items like vases or decor with a floral theme. I took the photo of this toothpick holder earlier in the year. The Forget-me-knot flowers grew in our garden.

Cindy Humphrey from Cynhumphrey says:

I definitely do not have a green thumb when it comes to flowers. However, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying them. I especially love the blooming flowers!

On the other hand, I also love faux flowers but I don’t want them to look like a cheap plastic floral decoration.

Allergies also run in the family so sometimes it’s a challenge to find just the right bouquet for our table.

That’s what inspired this neat item! It’s a combination floral and upcycled item all rolled up into one truly amazing conversation piece! The flower is made from pistachio nut shells! The finished bouquet is perfect for the table (if nobody in the family is allergic to nut trees)! The best part is, it can be custom made to match any decor theme!

Lia Russo from Ghirlandiamo says:

I’m really fond of bulbs, particularly l do love irises. I liked the American Iris Society’s Facebook page, where I can see these wonderful flowers. And this is my homage to them.

Ghirlandiamo

pam colangelo from PearlsVintagebyPam says:

I love flowers! Spring is my best display. I have many perennial flower beds but they are a lot of back breaking work. If only it wasn’t for weeds! These tin canisters are bright and flowery!

Ilda Pereira from lililapt says:

Flowers are one of the favourite motifs I use when I embroider. I love them!

Astrid Stenerud Prayag from RedNeedleQuilts says:

I love pansies. We always had pansies on the farm in Norway where I grew up. Every year, at the end of the cold and snowy winter, my late Mom bought seeds to grow for the garden. Among the several sachets with seeds, there was the pansies. I couldn’t wait for the seeds to grow, for the tiny plants to get big and strong enough to be planted in pots outside as well as in some of the flower beds. I love all the color variations the pansies have, so colorful and eye catching.

JO from alustrousjewellery says:

Love flowers! I remember picking daisies as a child and making daisy chains, these daisy earrings remind me of that time.

Kristen from KestrelCollection says:

I love fairy flower earrings. I make them in all different colors and styles and they are where most of the color resides on my shop.

Connie Lee from Bungalow42 says:

It’s hard to imagine anyone that doesn’t love flowers. Hmmm… maybe those unfortunate folks with allergies. Well here’s a handful of flowers guaranteed to be pollen free!

Vintage lucite teal blue moonglow rounds and light blue Peruvian flowers – so pretty together. The clay fired hand painted flowers vary slightly from one to another adding a unique element to this sweet bracelet. These Peruvian beads have a folk art vibe that is a pleasing contrast to the luminescent vintage lucite moonglow.

Gillian Haqqani from Gillisflowers says:

I have a shop full of flowers! Here though is a piece made from recycled paper and featuring two roses. Here I’ve used paper from an old copy of Pride and Prejudice but as a custom order you can scan me a page from your favourite book, the sheet music from a special song or even a section of a map showing a favourite place and I can turn into a truly meaningful piece of jewellery.

Nancy Duncan from EponasCrystals says:

Roses are my favorite! Especially the fragrant varieties. This is a real rose bud encased in resin.

EponasCrystals

Susan Fowler from SSFDesigns says:

Karen Hafel from timetalentjewels says

How about a hand knitted and felted bag with a flower on it? Recently I purchased a book on how to make real flowers other than this one and knitting and felting them has been a real treat. My last purse that I sold was my cover photo of a red purse with pansies. There are lots of flowers to knit and felt, it just takes time and patience.

Barbara from MermaidsHatbox says:

No hat without flowers. Flowers determine the style of a hat. Depending on material and design. This hat from jeans fabric with crochet flowers and embroidered with pearls is reminiscent of the 70’s.

Christine from cwagenblass9 says:

I love making paper cut out flowers for diy creators. Tropical florals are a great way to decorate weddings and showers.

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio says:

I love the idea of digital paper because once you purchase the file, you can keep it on hand and printout as many or few as you like. You don’t having to rush back to the store for more of the same when you run out.

This floral stationery is cheerful with beautiful autumn tones of warm reds and oranges. I captured the background photograph of straw flowers while shopping at a market in Montreal, Canada.

StockLaneStudio

Heather Youngblood from youngbloodMADE says:

A lot of my artwork focuses on flowers. I have recently become enamored with the the language of flowers. I am fascinated with the symbolic meanings attributed to flowers and love the lore of the Victorian age when flowers were purposefully and thoughtfully arranged so as to convey secret messages and nuanced thoughts.

youngbloodMADE

Cerena Levene from CerenaLevene says:

I truly enjoy flowering trees, with the branches being just as extravagant to me as the floral explosions erupting along those limbs. I enjoy the light streaming throughout, showcasing shadowy depths and highlighted blossoms!

CerenaLevene

Przemila K from CanisArtStudio says:

Autumn is the last moment when I can paint flowers by nature. I like the colors of autumn flowers. They create strong accents and add joy when days are cloudy. I sketched pastel by nature. This is a classic still life.

CanisArtStudio

Patricia from TheOldBarnDoor says:

I planted a special garden in the fall of 2016 so that I could show my Canadian pride in the spring of 2017 for Canada’s 150th birthday celebration. This was a lavish display of red and white tulips. I couldn’t help but smile every time I walked past this part of the garden in the spring.

Beach Time

Contributor Post by Sheila and Shannon of BeadyEyedBird

For some of us, August may be our last chance to hit the beach for the summer. What do you love most about the beach, and which/where is your favorite? We asked our teamies what they bring (or sell) related to BEACH TIME (!) and here’s what they said!

This photograph was captured on the Oregon Coast (I offer a printed and printable version). My children and their cousins were having a little beach therapy: sinking their feet in the sand. The wild natural beaches of the Pacific North West are my favorite. The chilly waters of the ocean along the Oregon coast can be too much for some, but with temperatures reaching 107°F (42°C) in much of the state for the first week of August, the Oregon beaches are the place to be.

I can’t think of the beach without the sight and sound of waves breaking on the shore. If you explore beneath the waves, you might be surprised at the variety of sea creatures that inhabit the reefs. Our “Reef Buddies” quilt features pieced wave blocks along with colorful creatures from the shallow seas. Use this pattern to make a keepsake of your perfect beach vacation!

My family started an annual beach trip and we went to the Oregon Coast this year. It was really cold there but I loved watching my nieces and nephews play, a couple of them had their first time seeing the ocean! I have this adorable beach theme scrapbook in my shop perfect for those cute photos of kiddos playing on the beach.

Connie Lee from Bungalow42 said:

One glance at my shop will tell you that I am fond of the beach. I grew up near the Texas coast and spent many happy childhood days on the beach with my family. As I grew my love of the beach flourished. I learned to surf in high school though anyone familiar with the Texas coast knows that the waves are usually kinda lame short of an approaching hurricane. Storms aside catching a modest wave on my giant surf board (dating myself here) was always a thrill.

It is this love of the beach that inspires many of my designs but none more perhaps than my shell earrings. Each shell is spaced expressly to mirror the opposite earring. Given the unique nature of shells no two earrings are identical which is part of their charm. The shells sway gracefully on waxed linen thread and make a lovely sound that is so faint only the wearer will hear its whisper.

My favorite place to visit the ocean beaches is New Zealand. Not so much for white sand, but I love rocky coastlines, and NZ has lots and lots of that. I find beaches especially interesting when there are seashells to find and rocks to explore.

This stationery / printable journal set is from a variety of beaches – New Zealand and California, but I’m not sure to be honest where they all were. I sell scrapbooking items but I am pretty poor at actually finishing scrapbooking, and have lots of unlabeled travel photos in drawers and on the computer. I hate that I am so disorganized!

I was half brought up on the beach with spending all holidays at the family beach house! At this time it was a sleepy seaside town, now it is a commercial metropolis with corporate surf shops and fashion labels – needless to say I don’t go there anymore!

But I do still love the beach in summer. These beach themed charms are ideal for adding summer accents to your jewellery, bunting, handbags, and home decor.

My favourite beach as a child was Air Papan Beach in Mersing, Malaysia. I love collecting seashells on the beach! There are always so many different shapes and types of shells. This is a special piece of jewellery I made with a collected seashell and bead embroidery.

Summer Hobbies

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Most of us have at least one hobby that we do in our down times. A hobby could be reading, crafting, biking and so much more.

What summer hobbies do you participate in? Are these solitary ventures or group events? What is it about them that you love? Tell us anything else you want to tell us about it.

Susan from SSFDesigns says my husband and I love to go bird watching ! We go for long walks with our binoculars and bird books in hand . We have started a life list and so far we have 115 birds on that list! Not only is it a wonderful way to spend time together get some exercise it also inspires me to crate seeing all the beautiful colors!

Linda from LazyYVintage said I usually tackle do it yourself projects. This year, I sanded and repainted a round picnic table and its four benches. I wish I could post some pictures of it! I picked it up for $20 at a garage sale. It is a VandyCraft made by Edward Vandy from Oak Park, IL. He had a shop at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago from 1956 to 1979. I didn’t know that until I started the sanding.

Cristal from DesignsbyCristal states that every summer my family and I try to find a different local farm to buy our summer fruits and veggies from. I have so many allergies and dietary issues that buying fresh and making the meal myself is the best but sometimes the stores don’t carry a decent selection of the types I want.

We love to see how the farmer marries different veggies to create somethings brand new and these are the ones I gravitate towards the most. I love coming home to unload my colorful finds and getting together with my daughter to decide what our next master piece will be. We recently made a sweet potato pie from purple yams (yummy)!

I used to drink coffee by the gallon, but then one ran out milk (because the kids drank it all) so had a cup of black tea …. that was about ten years go and haven’t drank coffee since!! But I do love the colour and smell of coffee, especially fresh beans. These beads remind me of the shape and colour of fresh coffee beans, and are ideal for a range of jewellery making and craft projects.

The best coffee is the first cup of coffee in the morning! I love to drink coffee in all variations: black, cappuccino, latte macchiato. This cap is made from a used coffee bean sac. I don’t know the lettering, some bags have the typical hole where the coffee is tested and when I cut out the seams to prepare the burlap for the project I find coffee beans inside.

Keeping Out The Chill

Contributor post by Catherine of DesignsByCnC

As the winter season settles in, it ushers in a dazzling display of glistening snowflakes and the chill of Jack Frost nipping at your nose.  In addition to going to work every day, during the Christmas Season, we are often out and about, even more attending parties and events.

When the objective is to stay warm, yet be fashionable how do we select an outfit that meets these requirements?

  • For a casual day, I like the look of pants, top, and jacket in neutral colors. Then spice it up with splashes of color from accessories like shoes, hats or scarves.

  • For a day at the office, pair up a colorful summer maxi dress with some tights. Accessorize with a pair of boots and leather jacket.

  • Another great look is a pastel colored maxi skirt combined with a dark-colored sweater. Complete the look with a coordinating dark jacket, oversized scarf and boots.

I posed the question “In the winter, how do you stay warm and fashionable?” to members of the Etsy Christmas In July Team.  Here are their suggestions and a winter weather fashion accessory to help keep you in style.

With hats! I have always loved a good hat, and now that I make them myself, I have styles and colors for just about every outfit, season, and mood. Hats keep you warm and can also cure bad hair days. Got to run to the store before you have a chance to get tidied up? Not a problem with a good hat! I usually end up with the test model for new hats, so they can sometimes be a little quirky, but that’s fine because I am too. (And many thanks to my good friend for the excellent photograph and her lovely daughter modeling.)

Susan Fowler from SSFDesigns responds:

There is nothing like a faux fur jacket to keep your warm and stylish on those cold winters nights when you have to go out.

I made this design for one of my daughters who had to go out a lot for dinners for work and she was always cold. She needed something to keep her warm while still looking good!

Here in Florida, where I am, it does get cold, just not for long. A nice light shawl or sweater is perfect for most Winter days in the South. This lovely angel wing crochet shawl is all done in white. Perfect for evenings outdoors, church, parties, or just a light piece to wear around the house.

Of course, you accessorize by proclaiming your love of snow! These pendants are about the joy of ‘swooshing’ down a snowy hill. Although, they still are an awesome winter jewel even if you are a terrible skier like me!

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz discusses:

I grew up in Germany where winters can be really cold – and long. Now I’m living in Northern California where winters are pretty mild. We have a few frosty nights and mornings, but compared what I used to experience this is nothing. However, a hand knit hat comes in handy when I go out for an early walk, and the leaves stitched on the hat remind of warmer days to come

Easy Breezy – Cool Summer Clothes And Accessories

Contributor post by Catherine from DesignsByCnC

During these hot sultry days of summer it is often very difficult to keep ourselves cool and yet be able to dress both fashionably and stylishly.  We’ve all experienced that moment when we get ourselves put together in the morning to head out the door-perfect outfit, makeup and hair just right.  Then you step outside and the excessive humidity hits you.  All of a sudden you are transformed into a dripping wet mess.

So how can you stay cool and comfortable and still look great?  One suggestion is to keep your clothes loose.  The less fabric you have actually touching your body, the cooler you will be. This allows more airflow on your skin which will help cool you down.

I posed this question to the members of the Etsy Christmas In July Team.  Here are their suggestions along with stylish clothes and accessories to help you look your best during the dog days of summer.

beverly from designbcb says:

I am never without a glass of water when it’s hot in the summer. I have a 20 ounce travel mug that I fill with ice and then water and it gets filled again every hour. I stay very well hydrated and I do my photography before noon or after three. It’s been close to 100 for the past few days and even being outside and not moving around a lot brings on the sweat. The water is a necessity.

Melissa R from missy69 added:

We live in Florida, so the heat and humidity is awful this time of year. My best advice to beat the heat, is don’t do anything, lol. Just kidding, to keep cool we spend a lot of time at our local springs where the water is very cold and refreshing. It is 70 degrees all year, or 72, the springs water temp. Summer here in Washington state is never as hot as some states but when we do have those lazy days of summer I love to take a nap in the shade and drift off listening to the sounds of the day, the breeze, birds and the sound of children playing in the sprinkler of pool
