Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is one of the significant celebrations here in Singapore. The City becomes lively with parades, festivals, decorations, events and activities! Singapore is a multi-cultural community and people from all walks of life enjoy and participate in this holiday.

Chinese New Year is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements.

It begins with first new moon of each calendar year and ends on the full moon. This Year it starts on February 19.

The celebrations continue for the coming 15 days, with each day being significant for a specific celebration/ ceremony.

The Food

Food is a big part of Chinese New Year celebrations, and many meals are eaten with family and friends. Some traditional favorites are steamed rice pudding, dumplings, nian gao cake and long noodles.

Cleaning & Decoration

Homes are thoroughly cleaned before the beginning of the new year, you are should not clean on New Year’s Eve/Day because it’s believed that good fortune will be swept away if cleaning is done on New Year’s.

People decorate their homes with lanterns and tangerines and fresh flowers. Red is the main color as it signifies bright and happy future.

Family Dinners

Chinese New Year is a family-centered celebration. Families and friends gather up for dinners, tables are set for the deceased relatives as well they  are honored this way.

Hong Bao

Children receive Hong Bao that is Money from elders in Red packets.

Mythology

According to the legend Chinese New Year began with a battle against a mythical beast called the Nian, he come on the first day of  new year to eat children, livestock and produce. To save and protect themselves, the Villagers would put food in front of their doors believing that the creature would eat that and leave without harming them.

It was believed that the Nian was afraid of the colour red and firecrackers, so people would hang red lanterns outside and set off firecrackers.

Chinese Zodiac

Chinese Astrology uses one’s Birth Day and Birth Time to predict their fortune. The astrological birth chart is built by the Chinese Astrology Calendar, which is a combination counting system of Yin-Yang Five Elements and 12 animals. The Five Elements are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth. The twelve animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat/Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Year 2015 – Year of the Goat

This year will mark the beginning of the Year of the Goat, people born in this year are considered gentle mild-mannered, shy, stable, sympathetic, amicable, and brimming with a strong sense of kindheartedness and justice.

Memories Of A Lifetime – #CIJRoadTrip

We spent the month of August traveling the world on the first Christmas In July Road Trip! Since the CIJ team is worldwide we held a virtual #CIJRoadTrip right here on our blog!

The Road Trip began on Friday – August 1st, 2014 and concluded on Sunday – August 31st. As I mentioned the team is international and we went to visit many countries along the way!

We wanted to include as many of our talented team members as possible! The participation was fantastic! Our itinerary was filled as we traveled all over the world!

Each team member shared with us their country, as well as a little bit about themselves and their shops. I personally made many new friends and the world feels smaller to me now! Please join me to enjoy the memories of a lifetime!

We are getting excited for the first Christmas In July Road Trip! Since the CIJ team is worldwide we are going to hold a virtual #CIJRoadTrip right here on our blog!

The Road Trip begins on Friday – August 1st, 2014. As I mentioned the team is international and we are going to visit many countries along the way!
