Floral Fantasy

Contributor Post by Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

Don’t you just love flowers! This is a lovely topic with all the gorgeous great smelling flowers in the world.

Along with the flowers we grow in our gardens, those that get presented to us in beautiful bouquets and the flowers we admire in someone else’s garden – we also have the plentiful array of life-like faux flowers, from silks to succulents.

I’d love to hear your stories about the wonderful Floral Fantasy creations you’ve encountered throughout the years – and of course, see the corresponding items in your shops.

Connie Lee from Bungalow42 says

Who doesn’t love flowers? The allergy prone aside…

I tend to be drawn to the minimalist approach in flower arrangements. A great example of this minimalist approach is Ikebana. This Japanese art of flower arranging has inspired many florists to create fresh, natural creations with an emphasis on balance and imbalance, as well as graceful lines.

These earrings composed of cascading three petal flowers hand-knotted on walnut waxed linen are an Ikebana inspired design.

The flowers sway softly as you move creating a graceful floating effect, particularly fun against a backdrop of tresses.

I love flowers! This set of three premade scrapbook pages is meant to be a bit abstract and ethereal, with the flowers almost blending in to the background. I added swirls and I think the effect is rather elegant, yet rustic – a bit messy even! So fun to create like this!

I love flowers, gardening and all that lovely nature has to offer. I’m always inspired by the colours and patterns of plants and flowers I see when I’m gardening or walking the dog.

My needle felted gnomes have all had green fingers and I love discovering their personalities and giving them flower stories too. This fella may look a little grumpy but a fresh bloom will always put a smile on his face.

I too love flowers. And, I also love florist ware. All those vases and planters that are full of flowers, and memories of the flowers that were once there. I’ve been truly blessed with a husband and sons who know how much I do love flowers. Now instead of sending me another vase from the florist shop (of which I have numerous colors, size, and styles of) they go out of their way to find me a unique vintage vase or planter. My personal collection of florist ware is growing with each birthday or Mothers’ Day.

This bowl is from FTD in 1979. Back in the day when unique, quality florist ware was used to create their beautiful bouquets.

 I love daisies!!

Daisies are so dainty and just flow in the wind with such grace. I picture myself standing in a field of them and thinking how nice it is to not have a care in the world.
I’d bet you have a fur child with the name daisy and she’d love this adorable dog collar.

I love wearing floral dresses. Last week I wore a black dress with large yellow sunflowers to a school presentation opening. I noticed everyone wearing muted grey and blue office clothes and felt a little bit out there! I kinda wished I’d worn my plain navy dress but still I would have accessorised with a colourful tote abundant with flowers just like this one!

Is there anyone who does not love flowers? No, l cannot think so!

My love for flowers began when l was a child, as my mother was used to have a lot of flowered plants and l always took care of them together with her.

I love almost all flowers, but my preferred are the orange ones, as you can clearly see in my shop.

Living in Massachusetts in the Northeast we have long, cold Winters, and I say every year how I cannot wait for Spring!

I love flowers, plants, and trees, planting them and watching them grow!

I plant indoors, outdoors, and also do experiments with pollinating them and attracting bees and butterflies with certain plants!

I am inspired by nature and enjoy adding flowers and items from nature into my item photos and some of my creations!

Lovely items everyone! I love how floral and flowers and all things flowery are being represented in many forms. Thank you

In my owl shop I tend to add a flower to everything, or find a colorful floral fabric to match whatever mood I’m in, and for that particular item.

Since I am owl oriented, we choose this pretty owl floral plush for my bulletin boards.

The Joy Of Color

Contributor Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady

As an artist I love colors of every hue, brightness, patina, neon! You name it I have used it in some aspect in an art or craft item. As a collector, I love the unique and wonderful vintage item, the older the better – in many aged woods and metals, or any combination, even plastic and fabrics!

If this topic has swept over you with magnificent rainbows, fluttering golden wings and blue-green ocean waves Please share your thoughts! We’d love to hear them and see your items.

Leila Blakely from LasLovelies says

I have always loved the bright and bold color palette . My favorite is the rainbows I get to see from my view into the river valley below me. I have several beautiful double rainbow photos I have been able to capture. God’s handiwork and promise.

This little gal is the epitome of a rainbow. Ha! Her colorful leggings and bright multi colored cumber bun. I really don’t think anyone can get any closer to a bright and bold statement as this little doll. As much as this palette is my favorite I certainly don’t think I would be caught dead wearing an outfit like this. Ha!

As an artist I love getting my hands covered in paints. I seem to paint myself as well as any piece I am working on. My favorite color is Yellow warm and relaxing. I totally get lost in colors and thoughts while painting. Painting and designing my work bring joy to my life with a slash of color to my world.

Soo….as an interior designer, I’m an equal opportunity COLOR lover!! There really isn’t ANY color I don’t enjoy working with! I often push folks to step away from the safe and boring ” beige” as I know they are always more thrilled with the “feeling” a color brings to an interior.

As for my ETSY work…COLOR is always critical. I like things to blend well, so I’m very “picky” about how an art piece comes together. Every addition to a piece has to be complimentary. I consider the “balance” of color throughout every work as well. Here are Holt Howard Kitties that are “Vintage Valentine’s brought to life!” Putting together a pleasing palette for this pair was fun for me!

Many people are afraid of color! As a designer, we love to start with a few key pieces in solids and start adding colors and textures. Most kitchens tend to have a neutral color palette and this is one of the easiest rooms to add pops and sparks of color! Start with a colorful vase, a piece of artwork or a series of colorful tea towels. It will liven up the room and your enhance your spirit!

I don’t think I ever met a color I didn’t like (except maybe mustard yellow). When I find a design or pattern I like, my first inclination is to make it in every color that the fiber comes in. I have made my winter hats in all the basics – black, brown, gray, blue – and have more to work through. My favorite so far is this bright pistachio green, accented with a hint of white & gray alpaca.

I love colour (even when it is not in fashion – lol) and one of my first memories of colour is looking through a kaleidoscope as a child. The patterns and colours left an imprint on my mind that I am still inspired by today.

These beads, available in a range of colours, remind me of the kaleidoscope effect because of the faceted surface which reflects colour, and look great when incorporated in jewellery, costume design , bunting, journalling and more.

Color is magical! It tells stories hidden in a piece of art. I love all colors ranging from black and white to pastel and bold rainbow colors. I guess it depends on my mood at that moment to decide which color to use in my painting. I am thankful to be able to enjoy colors and appreciate them as much as I can.

Connie Lee from Bungalow42 says

Once upon a time I was completely intimidated by color. As a then Manhattanite I tended to wear black – a lot. It was not until I began to take classes in jewelry design that my eyes were opened to the endless possibilities of color. In much of my work I lean toward bright colors and unusual pairings of disparate colors. Finding vintage materials in unusual colors or color pairings is always a joy.

These three necklaces feature a trio of vintage hand painted fish with a folk art vibe in bright and interesting color combinations. The fish were originally part of a large statement necklace. The original piece had large oxidized chain links with antique brass bells and etched fish as well as four smaller plump hand painted fish which I turned into earrings. The necklace was a vintage piece that belonged to a family member but no one seems to know its origins. Reimagining that original funky strand of odd bits of vintage painted wood and metal was such fun!

I LOVE color – which is evident if you take a scroll through my shop! I made these pendants after being inspired by the color of a glacier I saw, which was blue even though we think of ice or snow as white. This led me to think about all of the colors that make up white light until it is bent by a prism! Hence, the “Colors of white” enameled pendants!

As an artist I love creating many of my pieces with vibrant colors in mind. Color to me makes even a gloomy day seem brighter!! While my favorite colors are purple, red, coral, and turquoise I will still experiment with any color to its fullest potential. As you can see in this wristlet I love many shades of color and will use just about anything to bring it to life.

In my home I have painted the walls a neutral color so that I can use vibrant colors to bring life to each room and tell the story of what they are used for which leaves my guest walking wanting to take those ideas to implement in their own homes. Yes….color is the way to express yourself to its deepest level.

One Of A Kind – OOAK

Contributor post by Opal of ApronStringsOwlLady

Doesn’t it feel great to make or find a unique item and list it as OOAK, one of a kind, knowing your shop – exclusively – carries that particular item?

I love to paint OOAK owls and create one of a kind Halloween wreaths! It’s the best part of creativity, letting your imagination and materials flow into something uniquely handcrafted.

Sometimes it’s a vintage item you find – it surely must have been made years ago by a craftsman and is truly one of a kind! Tell us your thoughts about it.

Jerry and Opal from ApronStringsOwlLady says

Our OOAK one of a kind item – Owl Jewelry Board
My husband Jerry and I have designed and made unique items for many years. At times we get an idea, sketch it out and he will square up the edges so to speak – and create a marvelous item.
The following owl jewelry board he did on his own! I selected the fabric for the insert only, the rest was his excellent ingenuity and professional craftsman skills.

I’m sure I have quite a few items that are OOAK (even though I forget what the abbreviation stands for most of the time – Ha!) not that they were one of a kind at the time they were manufactured, but over time have become very rare. This piece is because, back in the 80’s, I collected tins that were of red, black and white in color to go with the my kitchen decor.

I had quite a few Hills Bros. and Schilling articles to display.
Over the past 15 years or so I have been selling my pieces to collectors and now this is my final piece that I am selling in my Etsy Shop. Sentimental? Maybe. After all it is my last tin.

I design and sew each of my items. Almost all are OOAK because I may be working with a small amount of the fabric and also because it is difficult to make another item exactly the same.
One of my favourite expressions is that ‘the fabric talks to me’. I find myself getting side-tracked regularly as I browse my (extensive!) fabric and trim stash. I often sketch a design and write some notes, then slip it into a piece of fabric with the trims so I can walk away and stay focused on the project my sewing table! This small tote bag remains a favourite of mine from my range of OOAK handmade fabric gifts. It is an original design made from gifted and gathered vintage fabrics and trims

This OOAK necklace is unique because it is handmade and carved by me in my studio… what makes it extra special is the firing process: a saggar bonfire. This is a random process so that any pieces produced from this firing can never be repeated, so it is truly OOAK.

A saggar bonfire means the pendant is placed in a coffee tin full of organic material, such as seaweed, banana skins, cow dung, pine cones and sawdust. The tin is then placed in a bonfire for 3-4 hours.

Housewarming Gift Idea – Pam Maggio from PamsPawsJewelry:

Ok, the plates below are pretty vintage and kind of Edwardian or old fashioned.

They have poetry and flowers on them too which is unique!

They would make a nice gift for someone who loves these sort of items, poetry, floral dishes, etc.

There is a trend now that when you are invited or go to someone’s home you can bring a homemade treat such as cake, cupcakes, pastries, or other condiments wrapped up on pretty vintage plates!

Then when you leave you can leave your hostess with a nice gift of pretty plates rather than having also to worry about bringing the dishes home!

I’m all about Christmas and what better time to have a house-warming fiesta? I would bring this sweetie…a little decor for the upcoming holiday and something vintage and homey.

Housewarming Gift Idea’s – Robyn Campbell from RobynFayeDesigns

I have coasters scattered through out my house, on the table, the arm chairs and bedside drawers – you can never have too many. I think they make a great house warming gift, something useful and a little piece of unobtrusive art as well!

Bohemian Style

Contributor post by Sheila of BeadyEyedBird

Bohemian, Gypsy, Boho, Ethnic, Hippie — whatever you choose to call it, it’s FUN!

In modern usage, the term “Bohemian” is applied to people who live unconventional, usually artistic, lives. The original “Bohemians” were travelers or refugees from central Europe (hence, the French bohémien, for “gypsy”).

At the beginning of the Bohemian ‘movement’, it was said that gypsy girls themselves “… are sexy and delightful precisely because they do not give a hoot for fashion.”

When the style was first identified, it was the early 20th century. Fast forward to the 60’s & 70’s when major designers started to routinely promote the “peasant look” and selling a range of “uniquely eccentric clothes”. (How many of you still have some of those in the back of your closet, like me??)

Fast forward again to the late 1980s, when variants of the short and fundamentally un-Bohemian rah-rah skirt (which originated with cheerleaders) were combined with leather or denim to create a look with some Bohemian or even gothic features. New names emerged, like ‘hippie chic’ and ‘boho-chic’. Similar styles were sometimes referred to as “bobo” or “ashcan chic” or “luxe grunge” — with leading proponents including actresses Mary-Kate Olsen and Zooey Deschanel.

Whatever it’s called, and whatever the iteration/era, we L.O.V.E. it. We asked our CIJ teamies to tell us their stories about their favorite ‘boho’ style (or its cousin) — and share an item from their shop that represents it. Here’s the cool stuff we got.

Robyn Campbell from RobynFayeDesigns says:

To me, bohemian means freedom or freestyle, lots of colour and textures. I would love to have my own little caravan and travel like a gypsy following the warm weather. When I was 18 I lived with my boyfriend in a transit van for two months then graduated to a small caravan and traveled up and down the east coast of Australia for 6 months. It was fun but difficult to get work with no fixed address.  Maybe when we retire I can convince hubby to travel! Until then I’ll stick to making caravan coasters and dreaming!

I was pretty young during the 60’s but did love the hippy flower power style… still have a side of me that loves the flowers from the 60’s.  Here is a ribbon I carry in my shop that reminds me of the hippy flower power days…

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese says:

When I hear the term Boho I think of bright colours, funky patterns and flowers! I especially love flowers and i love the idea of wearing flowers in one’s hair!
I made these flower cards using boho paper.

Nancy Duncan  from EponasCrystals says:

When I was growing up in the seventies, it was all about bell bottoms and peace signs, beaded necklace, clog shoes, and wild head bands. We called it hippie, but now it’s “hippie-chic”. Here is my modern version of the “hippie chic” style.

GypsyGeneralStore from GypsyGeneralStore says:

I was an “oops” in my family; born several years after my older sisters. I was the recipient of all of their “hand me downs” – from clothes to record albums… when everyone else was listening to New Kids on the Block, I was rocking out to Led Zeppelin and the Doors. To this day, I have a deep appreciation for old things – passed down from generation to generation and I think it’s largely due to my “hand me down” childhood experience. I love anything with a story…

For me Boho means free-spirited. I consider myself one and am proud to raise my daughter who is 12 years old as a free-spirited young soul. We both love to dress up in bright colors.

Tell us about yourself.

My name is Robyn. I am married to Bruce and we have three wonderful teenage sons. We also have a little dog named Pipi. We live about 60 kilometers east of Perth, Western Australia on a large bush block in Gidgegannup. I was born in New Zealand, but moved to Australia 30 years ago. I spent 11 years in Darwin, Northern Territory where I completed an apprenticeship in tropical horticulture. From this comes my love for anything floral.

When did you open your business, and what made you decide to do so?

My Mum and sister suggested selling my bags at the markets, which I found pretty hard going with the boys’ weekend sporting commitments and a fly-in fly-out husband. I was already buying supplies through Etsy when eventually the thought came to me to open a shop online, and so I did in February of 2014.

Tell us a bit about your products.

I make all sorts of bags – cross body, handbags, clutches, totes, hobo’s, beach and shopping bags. I mainly use cotton quilting and home decor fabrics. I also make tea cosies and soft toys. Lately, I have been making coasters in the shape of caravans and VW’s. I have other ideas in mind also!

RobinFayeDesigns_02

What inspires your work?

I am inspired by retro style, my garden and of course bright colour. Ideas usually come to me when I’m trying to get to sleep at night.

RobinFayeDesigns_03

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

My goals are to get more involved with social media. I love Instagram, but need to start using other platforms. At the same time, I need to try to balance social media with crafting. Ultimately, the big dream for my business – to be known as ‘the’ place people come to for quirky, original, one of a kind, functional pieces.

RobinFayeDesigns_04

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

I think my products stand apart because they are so colourful. They are certainly not made to blend, rather they are the bold accessories to add that bit of a pop!

RobinFayeDesigns_05

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

Because I’ve always been a crafter, when we built our house, we made sure I had my own craft room. I’m an early riser, so my room is well away from the bedrooms so I can sew away happily in the early hours. I can also close the door and hide the mess when visitors arrive.

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

Don’t expect instant sales the day or weeks following the opening of your shop, it takes time. I used to worry when I had no sales for a while. Now, I know there are quiet times and things pick up again. Oh, and don’t store your finished bags in new plastic bins, they pick up a chemical musty smell. I now use linen laundry baskets.

RobinFayeDesigns_06

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

If you are a new seller, my advice to you would be take the best photos you can to show off your work. I know I have a few I need to redo. Also, join a team. Not only do they help you to get seen, but they are very supporting, knowledgeable and friendly.

RobinFayeDesigns_07

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I like to spend time with my family, whether that be talking around the table or going for bike rides, playing golf, squash, ping pong, frisbee or watching movies. I like to keep active through kick boxing, which I do with one of my boys. I also like gardening. While driving (at least two hours a day) I love to sing along to the radio and embarrass my kids with the lyrics I get wrong.

RobinFayeDesigns_08

What is your favorite quote?

“To the world you just may be one person, but to one person you just may be the world.” – Unknown.

Where can people find out more about your business?

You can find out more about Robyn Faye Designs on Instagram @RobynFayeDesigns, and on the RobynFayeDesigns Facebook.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I also have an Etsy shop called the Berry Road Boutique.

My old high school motto which I live by and share with you “Keep on striving”.
