Tell us about yourself.

I love creating ornaments for every season and occasion. I think I discovered the world of crafting in kindergarten when they handed me my first piece of paper and bottle of finger paints… I’ve been at it ever since.

I also have OCD, Obsessive Christmas Disorder which I thank my grandma for. When I was five she bought me my first little 3 foot aluminum tree with pink pine cone ornaments frosted in white. I haven’t stopped since. The crafting and Christmas became a natural extension of each other. Much of my Christmas village is handcrafted ceramic houses I’ve made, as are many of the Santa’s in my collection.

With Pinterest came a whole new world of crafting to explore.  I have been sewing since the age of 8 and I became fascinated with the quilted Christmas ornaments.  I made two and haven’t stopped since.

It didn’t take long to realize ornaments are a year round thing. The spring and summer collection looks beautiful piled in a basket or hanging from a ornament stand. The patriotic red, white and blue are stunning accents to your 4th of July table or door wreath. Autumn… Halloween… Thanksgiving and of course Christmas. The possibilities are endless.

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

I first opened the shop in 2015 as a means to get ornaments to the people who were asking to buy them. I did not put a lot of time into it at first.  Then, in 2016, I was downsized out of my job after 28 years and found myself looking for work for the first time in more than a quarter of a century. Yes, that is a scary thought.  As I searched for a new position over the next six months, I had time to learn new ornament designs and really spend time upgrading the shop and my website. It was something I loved doing and my goal was to make people happy and never be dependent on another company for my livelihood.

Tell us a bit about your products.

I love the time and effort that goes into each, one from looking for just the right fabrics to go together, to the hand crafting of each unique one, to the finishing touches of glitter accents, bows, jewels and charms. I may use some of the same fabrics on several ornaments, but each finished ornament is unique… no two finished designs are ever the same.

I’ve been honored to make ornaments for a mother from her wedding dress to give to each of her children, memory ornaments from shirts and dresses of loved ones who have passed on, special pets who become family members, documenting life events like weddings, graduations and new babies. Realtors who give personalized ornaments to new clients with a picture of their new home.  Each is created with love to hold memories for years to come and to be passed down from generation to generation.

What inspires your work?

Anything… everything!  A walk, a painting, a song, other artists, a memory a new fabric or trim.  Stories people share with me are inspiring in so many ways.  Inspiration is all around us everyday.  We just have to be open to seeing it.

One of my favorite quotes is “Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.”  – Mary Lou Cook.  I try to live life this way.

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

I am working towards making my business more full time. One of my major goals is to get back to my blog and share ideas, tips and tricks.  I have been very lax in this area.  In today’s eCommerce world we need to be on top of social media which is every changing.  I am also working towards getting more exposure on blogs and magazine features. A dream would to be have some of my pieces in a Christmas store and to continue to help my clients preserve memories of the special moments in their lives.

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

I try to treat every customer like royalty.  Providing legendary customer service is so important to me.  Honesty is the best policy.  If I do not feel I can give you a end result that you are going to love, I will say so.  I don’t accept a order just to make a sale. I always strive to improve the selection of my ornaments by introducing new processes and products. I stand behind my ornaments with 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

As your kids grow and leave home, new space opens up. A spare bedroom is now my studio. It is my creatively messy sanctuary. I am surrounded by things that inspire me and make me happy.  Pics of my kids and grand kids, a crystal sugar and creamer that was my moms, Christmas lights everywhere, pieces of fabrics and trims, gifts from friends, things my kids made in grade school. Every bit of wall space is filled with pictures. Bins filled with magical fabrics stacked on the floor. My kitty sleeps on the love seat while Christmas music plays on the radio. It is pure heaven!

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

The amazing feeling that comes when someone sends a message that says they received their ornament and love it. It is a indescribable sense of satisfaction that one of your creations could make someone so happy.

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Just do it!  Don’t wait for everything to be right or perfect.  You will make mistakes and you will learn from them. But there is never a better time to start than right now.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

Spending time with my family and I have a room in my home that stays Christmas all year.  I have a extensive Christmas village and I love spending time adding to it.

What is your favorite quote?

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.- Confucius

Secret Santa – #CIJParty 2018

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

We are going to have a Secret Santa with a twist! Usually it involves picking a name and then giving them the gift, but since we’re virtual we are improvising!

Members of the Etsy Christmas In July Team have chosen these Secret Santa gifts!

Mairi from mairidesign says:

A star for a star colleague, which can be hung in the window or on their tree. It can even be personalised with their name scrolled in wire. With this secret Santa gift, no-one need know from whence it came, only that they are your Christmas star.

mairidesign

Joanna from Aromatika Sapounia from JoannasScentedSoaps says:

This would be a nice secret santa gift for anyone: a set with luxury glycerin soaps and a charm for good luck, a handmade glass ornament.

JoannasScentedSoaps

patontheback from patontheback says:

What a thoughtful way to cheer a co-worker and a practical gift. A handcrafted mug rug. Gender neutral, yet good looking.

patontheback

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt says:

I think this handmade natural bracelet would be a great Secret Santa gift for any female on your gift-giving list. I think it would be great for a friend, co-worker, family member because its shades of neutral, earth tones makes it a great jewelry accessory, and will work well with anyone’s wardrobe

This bracelet has 7 of the 3/4 inch fancy beads with swirls of earth-tone hues; each is separated by a 1/4 inch dark brown, oblong wood bead (8 wood beads in total). The length of this bracelet is approximately 8 inches in length, which should fit an average-sized wrist, and has a antique-gold toned, fancy toggle-style closure.

SpoiledFelinesArt

friedasophie from friedasophie says:

I would give this necklace to my friend Tatjana who is currently going through chemo-therapy, so that she will get energy & protection through the stone. And just to put a smile on her face!

friedasophie

Patricia from TheOldBarnDoor says:

This scarf features one of my own photographs (of birch bark). The colors and design are neutral enough to go with just about anything a lady has in her wardrobe and can accent a casual turtle neck, a fancy blouse even a spring coat. So soft and luxurious, the scarf is one of a kind and sure to surprise and delight the recipient. A great price point too!

TheOldBarnDoor

mistycat1234 from carolinagirlz2 says:

I would give a Bucilla Heart Felt Holiday ornament kit, an easy project that someone could make without major crafting skills!

carolinagirlz2

Rebecca Turkovics from OrnamentsByRebeccaT says:

I would give this vintage Santa ornament because… well, it is a secret “Santa” exchange.

OrnamentsByRebeccaT

Cristal Hughes from DesignsbyCristal says:

This lanyard would go to my daughter who I’m praying will start to study the Bible soon and give her life completely to God. I always try to instill the word of God into both my children and especially more so in today’s time.

I look at this scripture lanyard as a tool for her to carry around when times get hard to be faithful in God’s word. This lanyard has some very helpful scriptures to give a new or old Christian a boost when it’s needed. In my belief having this close and personal relationship with God is by far one of the most important and unconditional relationships one can ever have!

DesignsbyCristal

Carla from CarlasCraft says:

I would share this Secret Santa gift with one of my friends, Isis, who was laid off from her job in February and has been diligently interviewing since. I love the Peace theme and using the wooden letters for that 3-D effect. Also, the use of an old book cover embossed and then mounted on the canvas is a fun technique I so enjoy!

Favorite Holiday Item In Your Shop – #CIJParty 2018

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings  and Mairi from mairidesign

We all have a favorite item that we have in our shop. It could be our favorite because of the process it took to make it, its color or any other reason.

Here, the team share their favorite Holiday item from their shop and tell us why they like it so much.

michael tarter from BurntEarthHorseHair says

One of my favorite Xmas items is my Luminaria Bags. They are ceramic clay and have holes in them to let the candle light shine through. I crave out different designs on the bags. One of my favorite designs is the Corrales Old Church. I have several sizes available and over 20 different designs.

Dianna from HoneyMyrtleStudio says

One of my favourite items is my blue hand dyed cushion cover. It was one of the first items I made using hand dyed fabric that I had done myself.

Roses Workshop from RosesWorkshop says

I love my Harris tweed baubles. They bring the beauty of hand-woven fabric to something purely decorative. Lovely enough to be kept as heirloom pieces.

Arlene from ThisandThatCrafter says

Hands down this is my favorite item… This ornament has such a sweet story behind how it came to be… I have lived in my home since I was born and one of my neighbors that had been in her home since before I was born asked me to come down to her home to look at some things 3 years ago in the summer of 2015. She then gave me a piece of a sweater that she said was one of her favorites. It was her sweater many years ago when she was much younger. She said she had reused most of it but had this one side left and she wanted to give it to me as she knew I sewed and asked me to make something so that her favorite sweater could live on. The color reminded me of dirty snow. So I made the dirty snowman out of what was left of her special sweater… I gave one to her to put on her tree. I kept one and gave my daughter one and the rest are for sale… so far a total of 6 are living on in Christmas celebrations. I have one more made and enough to make 2 more beyond that. Then all the sweater will be gone. Sad to say that she passed away in 2016 and her granddaughters came to get me and told me I could have what ever I wanted out of her sewing room… one of the things I got was many buttons that were cut off of garments once the garment was done being used. I now am adding 2 of those buttons to each of the remaining snowmen.

Patricia from TheOldBarnDoor says

My favorite item is this Christmas card featuring Miss Abbie one of our collies on an early morning walk here on the farm just after a fresh snow fall. I was never certain what captured her interest in the trees but I like the feeling and colours of this card.

Entitled Happy Collie Days this one always makes me smile. This image has been featured by The Collie Rescue Network in their calendars and on a note card they use to raise funds.

This “I love cats” handcrafted wooden plaque is my favorite shop item because it declares my love of cats … I consider it to be a customer favorite as well since I have sold several of them to other cat lovers!

I think it’s a great gift idea for the cat lover on a gift list because it’s cute and inexpensive!

Cat Wall Hanging

Mairi from mairidesign says

These Christmas bauble shaped tree decorations are my favourites because of the gorgeous iridescent glass I used and, also, that others also seem to really like them. I made some for my students and one of them ordered several for her colleagues. Then, my sister and my cousin ordered several each to hang as garlands in their windows. Then, more orders came. It was great! The little beads swing and tinkle in the breeze and add a chic touch to a festive display.

I loved making these waterless snow globes.

Christmas Snow globes

This was hard! I love Christmas and keep several Christmas items in my shop year ’round, because I think holiday lovers shop whenever the mood hits them. Right now it was between my red-nosed reindeer (I’m also an avid animal lover) and this guy. I guess he won out because he’s a new addition, so I wanted to welcome him.

il_570xN.1493823292_ffe1

Felted Santa Claus

This is my favorite piece for Christmas because it reminds me of ice crystals!

il_570xN.670178524_pfwu

Herkimer Diamond GF Ring

This ornament is one of my favs. It reminds me so much of growing up in Iowa and going sledding on my grandparents farm with all my cousins.

il_570xN.1472326400_t1f5

Christmas Quilted Ornament

I have so many favorite Christmas items in my shop but this one stands out to me especially since I choose to use the ribbon on a dog collar. We all have that pet who is both naughty and nice which makes this Christmas dog collar even more cute, funny and true to their personality.

Naughty or Nice Christmas Dog Collar

Wow, hard to choose just one. Don’t you find that when you make something new, it is almost always the favorite – until the next one! Anyway, here is my favorite. I love winter animal pictures, and my DH love penguins. When I saw these delightful guys, I just had to buy them, and I bought lots! Just couldn’t resist. I knew right away that some would be made into pillows. The rest are waiting for inspiration, and time.

Red, White And Blue – #EtsyCIJ 2018

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Red, White and Blue are not only the colors used for patriotic holidays and flags, but are also used in a wide variety of other ways. We want to see all your Red, White and Blue items especially if they don’t have any patriotic meaning behind them. It really is more about the colors then anything.

Pam from PamsPawsJewelry states I found this adorable teapot recently and think it is just so fun and cute!

It is Patriotic and a perfect gift for Independence, Flag, Veterans, Presidents Day or any other American themed holiday!

BUT, it is also a functional item for tea, cocoa, or coffee if made first then poured in, and it could be a cheerful addition to any 4th of July table decor – inside or out!

Could the gold star also be a Christmas star?

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt said living in Southeastern Louisiana, I am lucky because I get to see lots of beautiful birds as they pass through our area on their yearly migratory path … seeing these birds, as well as ducks and other assorted animals, inspire the artwork that we feature in our shop.

It was difficult to pick an item to feature, but I chose the Blue Jay bird because I love its vibrant blue color!

Mairi from mairidesign states Red White & Blue Sea Glass Earrings. Little glass jars filled with, genuinely, rare mini sea glass gems, which hang from silver-tone ear wires. Blue and, especially, red sea glass is very rare making these very limited edition pieces of jewellery. All these tiny chips were collected by my husband and I on the beaches of Spain, near Barcelona, washed ashore, after the Mediterranean Sea had worked its magic.

Must Have Stocking Fillers – #EtsyCIJ 2018

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Stocking fillers, or stuffers, are the smaller sized gifts we all love to get for Christmas. For some its gift cards, makeup and jewelry while others prefer a handmade trinket, picture frame or key chains. We asked our members to show us the stocking stuffers they have in their shop and a little about them. I am sure there is something here for someone on your list to love!

Roses Workshop from RosesWorkshop told us here’s a useful little gift for the man in your life. This pocket change purse is 10cm (4 inches) square. I make them in various Harris Tweed designs; this one is olive herringbone. Currently retailing at just £10.50 for a quality treat. Men can be so hard to buy for, so I designed something both smart and useful that they will appreciate every day.
