Child Health Day

Contributor post by Mairi from mairidesign

It’s Child Health Day on 1st October. When a child is ill, we may not always be able to ease their discomfort but, if we can bring out a smile or a giggle, we’ve helped a little. The Christmas in July team would like to share what they have in their shops that would make a child happy.

In the USA, Child Health Day is held on the first Monday of October, elevating the public’s knowledge and interest in children’s health.

Gari Anne from BeadLoversKorner says

Little girls love jewelry and this bracelet with a kitty cat and cute paw print beads is colorful and will put a smile on her face! She can then enjoy collecting charm beads to add to the bracelet making it a special and meaningful bracelet for her to wear.

Missy Jo and Erica from BeKindCreativeDesign says:

Hello everyone! We are an artistic mother-daughter duo who have a creative background and passion for art. Together we have experiences such as floral design, teaching children’s art classes and visual/fashion merchandising. Our shop is Be Kind Creative Designs. We are now open in Wilmington, NC at Blue Moon Gift Shops and are looking to expand through Etsy.

We chose to feature this 3 piece set of wood blocks with a Tree, Star & Twine. This piece is a good representation of what our shop consists of – lots of reclaimed wood and a variety of materials. It is a subtle piece of holiday décor that is cute and unique!

Good afternoon friends! I was excited to see this group and really happy the members joined me to your splendid creative group!

I’ve been living in amazing Ukraine since my childhood. I went to China 2 years ago and started my career as an artist and designer. I was decorating Chinese restaurants and kindergartens there. Now I came back to my family and created this shop.

This is our family business. Everyone of us makes some unique products which can help you to find unique wreaths.

Treasury Challenge Winner October – BestDressedBaby

Guest post by Kristy from KrystalKlarityBeads

On Etsy many shop owners curate treasuries. A treasury is a curated shop gallery composed of 16 items from any shop. Most of the time they are done by theme, color or just about any idea you can imagine. These are usually done for promotional reasons and also are sometimes just done for fun by those people who really enjoy making them. The Christmas in July team has challenges to create treasuries centered on themes of our choosing. We then pick a winner based on views, creativity and so on.

Our winner for our last treasury challenge was Judy who opened BestDressedBaby on Etsy in 2009 after years of making things for others. When asked how she first got started and what first interested her in opening a store on Etsy, here is what Judy had to say: I’ve been crocheting on and off since high school. Being a lefty, I actually had to teach myself by turning a book upside down in order to have the pictures more accurately show a left-handed crochet. When my children were babies, I made some of the booties that are in my shop. Then, when my first grandchild was born, I picked up my crochet hook again. I started showing the booties to friends and coworkers, and the orders slowly trickled in. In 2009 I discovered Etsy and opened my shop.

One thing that always seems to help is to ask people what the hardest or biggest challenge has been since starting your store here on Etsy – what, if anything, was your biggest challenge or something you would you say was something you wish you had known or been better prepared for?

I think the biggest challenge to opening up my shop was time management. When I opened my shop, I was working a full-time job. At first the orders were manageable, but as my shop became more well-known, I spent almost all my evenings and weekends filing orders. Now that I’m retired it’s easier to balance Etsy and household chores.

You have a variety of beautiful merchandise – what is your favorite part of having this store? What do you enjoy about it the most?

I love creating adorable accessories for babies. My favorites are the blankets and matching stuffed toy. The color combinations are endless, and I can make a set to coordinate with any nursery.

If you were to choose something else you are interested in doing or learning what would it be?

I would love to learn to knit. I’ve attempted some projects, but I don’t find it as easy, or relaxing as crochet. I’m sure that with some proper instruction I could expand the variety of items I’m able to offer in my shop.

Judy had one more interesting thing to share. She says; “Another interesting tidbit. While I was still working (in a public library) I would teach a class for the public interested in opening up their own Etsy shop. I usually did 3 or 4 of these classes a year. It was always interesting to hear what types of shop my students wanted to open.

I would like to say that it seems to me that the variety offered right now is stunning, and if Judy learns to crochet I have no idea how it could get any more beautiful and adorable, but maybe we will find out!

October – New Arrivals

Lia Russo from Ghirlandiamo says:

I saw these so nice and so tiny pumpkins and immediately imagined them on a green meadow: it would be a nice contrast of colors!

So I prepared the base with some stabilized lichen (it means its real lichen treated, so that it remains always the same).

Some maple leaves with their stunning forms and shades completed my fall landscape.

I think it’s a colorful wreath to enhancing any front door in this beautiful period of the year.

Decorative notebooks are something new I have added to my shop. I had the idea of making a pumpkin Notebook for the Fall season. Use for Journaling, writing something everyday that you are thankful for, or makes a fun gift for someone with a Fall Birthday!

I love searching for discarded desk organizers at antique malls or flea markets and painting them with a fresh coat of Chalk Paint, voila NEW and improved desk organizer!

Then I hand rub WAX onto the piece, so nice!

Judith Messenger from FabriArts says:

I just added this tablerunner/wallhanging to my shop today. I’ve been working on stocking my shop with table linens such as tablerunners and placemats. I had been working in a more neutral pallet, and also finished a quilt this summer using earth tones. I wanted to make something much more colorful, so chose these lovely turquoise, blue and teal batiks for a set of placemats and the runner. The bright colors made me smile each time I worked on the set. These pieces could bring a touch of the Caribbean to your decor all year long!

Patricia and Rebecca from northandsouthshabby says:

Several  years ago I stumbled upon a similar big eared elf much like this one at a thrift shop – it was love at first sight! I have been obsessed with these elves ever since. ( Who am I kidding? I’m at the hording stage!) I soon discovered that these elves come in several sizes which range from large 7 inch ones, to tiny 2.25 inch pixies. The predominant outfit color is red, followed by white polka dot. There are a few blue and green outfits out there too, but not many. They were made in Japan, by a handful of manufacturers, who seemed to blatantly copy each other! All were made post World War II from the early 1950’s to the 1960’s. I haven’t been able to locate any locally of late and now engage in online bidding wars at estate sales.

To me this elf ( and the rest of his “cousins” in our shop) represent the quintessential nostalgic Christmas decoration. A little shabby, but bright, warmly conjuring up memories of bygone holidays. Guaranteed to bring a smile and lots Christmas cheer to any spot.

I love Swedish, Danish and Norwegian linens, but stopped buying and selling them when so many wonderful Scandinavian shops started up on Etsy. They have much better access to these amazing pieces than I. However, I couldn’t pass up this Scandi textile, because it has the sweetest printed graphics I’ve ever laid eyes upon…I love the playful children, the proud parents, the colorful dala horse and explosion of flowers!

My original art quilt depicts the South Shore in the little Lake Michigan Village of Arcadia were we make our home. The solitude found on this public beach is reflected in the quiet sky and water at sunset. Using my Lake Michigan sunset photos, I created this art quilt in my home studio.
