Luxury

Contributor post by Sheila and Shannon from BeadyEyedBird

Who doesn’t love luxury items? Those little (or big) things that say, “I deserve this, and I’m going to enjoy the heck out of it!” Such things are different for all of us, and can range from an exotic scented shampoo to a BMW. But however we define them, they make us feel rewarded, special and happy. We asked our CIJ team members to tell us about the luxury items they treasure or crave, and about things they sell that say “LUXURY”.

Here’s what they said —

Melissa R from missy69 said:

I love gemstones, and have been collecting them for years. So, to me a luxury item would be a flawless, perfect color 3 ct Tanzanite, Or Blue Diamond. I don’t have any of those in my store, lol. I have created my own blue diamond wedding band, and I wear it all the time. Below is a picture of a lovely 16x10mm golden yellow citrine pear shape gemstone, set in sterling silver basket style prong pendant. November babies, this is your gemstone. It is on clearance sale right now, with free shipping to domestic addresses.

I suppose because I spend my days in making jewellery in my studio, wearing old clothes that are okay to potentially get ruined, luxury items for me would be beautiful handmade clothes! Then I would accessorize with one of my favorite forms of jewellery – a brooch! Brooches are trending right now, but I’ve always loved them. In the past (before I was a goldsmith), if I was to splurge on a piece of handmade jewellery it would be a unique brooch.

This brooch is one of a kind. I designed this brooch based on a photo of a beach in Spain. It is champleve enamel, which is an intensive process, where you first saw out the scene and solder it to the backing and then begin the enameling process. The enamel is built up through many layers and firings in the kiln, which is how you get the various colors showing through.

I think luxury items are anything that look good whilst also keeping me warm – I really feel the cold at this time of year so being cosy tops the luxury list for me! However, I truly believe luxury does not have to mean expensive – it’s more about the feeling it gives you, both inside and out, rather than the price.

As woollies season is well and truly upon us, I thought this hat would be a good example of a luxury item. Not only is the design really on trend for the season, it is the softest hat I sell in my little shop.

Its so warm that I even made one for myself and then in turn got asked by my Hubs to make one for him too (he’s bald and so needs something soft but extra warm to keep his brain from freezing this time of year!)

Our hats have kept us both lovely and warm and everyone who touches them is amazed at how silky soft and cosy they feel!

When I witnessed how happy this new mother was I knew that I wanted to knit similar items for my store. Thanksgiving And Holiday Feasts

Contributor Post by Sheila and Shannon of BeadyEyedBird

We asked our teamies what they like to do around the November holidays such as Thanksgiving or Remembrance Day, All Souls Day, Native American Heritage days, or their own special traditions, especially FEASTS. Here’s what they told us —

Susan-Sharon Passmore from MsPDesignsUSA said:

Thanksgiving just might be my favorite holiday! Our extended family gathers at my house, and we feast on roasted turkey with all sorts of delicious side dishes. I love to make pumpkin and pecan pies for dessert, and my sister usually brings fresh-baked rolls. After dinner, we might play games at the kitchen table or take a walk to the park to stretch our legs, let the kids play at the playground, and throw the ball for our dog.

This cute turkey applique would be perfect for a kitchen towel or a set of hot pads. I probably have time to make some for myself before the big day!

Unfortunately We Used to Have a Fight Over how the Turkey was Carved in those Early Married Days. Sorry to my Husband!!

I no Longer Cook the Turkey and my Husband No Longer Carves it. Here’s our Turkey.

I grew up in Germany and only came to the States when I was over 40 years old. So Thanksgiving is not really a tradition for me. However, we embraced it because I like the gratitude part of it. Around the end of November when the days are shorter, it’s getting considerably colder and the days are often grey, I like to curl up on the couch with a journal and take a look back over the year, writing down everything that I am thankful for. It is such a treat to read later what I was thankful for in the previous years and I see how rich my life is.

The vase was made in Germany during the 1920s–vintage political humor!

Reclaimed Materials – A Gateway To Creativity

Contributor post by Catherine of DesignsByCnC

Over Labor Day weekend, I attended our area’s largest flea market.  As a handmade artist, I enjoy going from booth to booth to see the beautiful home decor pieces, furniture and outdoor sculptures all created using reclaimed materials.

The booths with the pallet art and furniture were extremely popular, with pieces ranging from decorative wall art to dining room tables, as well as outdoor furniture. We discovered a unique bench handcrafted using pallets and a tailgate from an old Chevrolet pickup truck.   With our focus turning to autumn decor, I found myself drawn to the vintage framed screens hand painted with colorful scarecrows and pumpkins.  One of my favorite booths is that of an artist that reclaims framed windows from old homes and paints beautiful landscape scenes on the glass with stunning results.

Products handcrafted using reclaimed materials are unique, artful and more sustainable than many of today’s mass produced items.

As I admired the creativity, I was reminded of the idiom “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”.  Each year small businesses reclaim and salvage a significant amount of materials.  This not only helps eliminate landfill waste but also preserves part of our past.

I posed the question, Does your business upcycle or use reclaimed, salvaged materials? to the members of the Etsy Christmas In July Team.

GypsyGeneralStore from GypsyGeneralStore answered:

“They don’t make ’em like they used to”…. I grew up listening to my Dad make that statement time and time again and it’s true! I would rather repair, recycle or reuse something “old” than buy something new. I love to salvage bits and bobs, odds and ends – I have a stash of “trash” just waiting for a new purpose! This time of year, I love to give rusty old tart tins a new lease on life:

spoiledfelines1 from SpoiledFelinesArt had this response:

I grew up in Southeast Louisiana. When I was a young girl, my father taught me to respect nature as it is a finite part of our environment. We would go for walks along the waterways just talking about life and taking in the beauty of the sun setting over the marshlands. Sometimes we would come upon a unique piece of driftwood, which would end up in his workshop waiting for the perfect wood carving project to showcase its beauty.

Most of the items in my shop are made from reclaimed wood. I chose to feature my father’s hand carved woodpecker bird because I love its overall appearance, particularly the bird’s beautiful red head and its unique cypress driftwood perch!

Heather Barber from MooseintheMint shared:

I use a variety of games pieces to make a selection of items, from magnets to jewelry, scrapbooks to decorations. One box with an incomplete game can make a scrapbook or a clock with the board, a variety of cards and magnets from the cards, and some fun jewelry or key rings from the game’s pieces.

Bevan Blackshaw from TimberDimensions commented:

As a furniture maker, I have a deep and enduring respect, as well as appreciation, for the materials I work with. I despise waste and do whatever I can to reduce, reuse, upcycle, repurpose the offcuts I generate. I make bangles, pendants, earrings, brooches, and finger rings regularly. The one item I most enjoy is my Book Bird. A practical, functional item that I really do enjoy making. I love what I do!!

Corkycrafts from Corkycrafts added:

I repurpose wine corks in my shop. Hence the name Corky crafts. Guess what I promote wine drinking… HA HA HA….uh well least we have fun in our craft room.

My friends & family donate their corks and every cork creation gives life to a little cork that kept wine fresh. Speaking of fresh here is a new fresh item in our shop just in time for your Christmas planning….

Melissa R from missy69 stated:

I love this subject! I love to take garbage and turn it into something beautiful, or something old new again. I love glass, wood, and old or broken jewelry to reclaim/recycle/upcycle any of those terms work great. Below is a ring created from a broken pendant, and a broken ring that was just left as a band. I used wire to wire wrap them, and the result is beautiful and affordable. Nice small size to fit a small hand or pinky ring.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns remarked:

My shop is mainly ceramic homewares and jewellery, but I do love using repurposed materials to create some different jewellery pieces.
One of the materials I use are marbles – yes, my kids old marbles! The colours and patterns in them are truly beautiful and they are lightweight and lend themselves to necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pretty much anything!

Interestingly enough, most of these get shipped overseas from the US. It is a great way to recycle and not let these go into the landfills. And the art and jewelry made out of them is really cool.

I love to re-purpose and recycle items into my handmade creations, but was getting tired of using the same old bottles, bottle caps, etc as my materials and wanted something new to work with. About 2 years ago I realized the possibility of re-purposing soda cans and quickly began making lots of ornaments and decorations with them. Today, the majority of my creations have some sort of ‘soda can ornament’ incorporated into them, and people are always shocked to find out that the item they are purchasing was made with a soda can!

My husband does wood turning as a hobby and I am frequently salvaging different types of timber off cuts or ‘non usable bits’! left on the workshop floor. From such finds, I weave my magic and create one of a kind jewellery, usually pendants or necklaces, featuring these re-purposed timber off cuts.
The necklace below features a fine silver heart and two round Tasmanian Oak beads prepared by me and incorporated into this creation.

Hello, Everyone!

If you’re one of those crazies like us who LOVES Halloween, you might be starting to get ready already! Also known as Samhain by some, this is one of the most magical times of the year. Samhain predates the Roman feast of the Dead, Lemuria, and All Hallow’s Eve – the eve of the Christian holiday to honor the saints, All Saint’s Day. The secular holiday today is known as Halloween. All of these festivals, despite their different names, focus on reverence for the dead, as well as a time to communicate with the deceased.

What do you do to prepare for Halloween, or celebrate your special ‘Bewitching Hour’? We asked our CIJ teamies to share their stories and bewitching items that show their love for this special time, and here’s what they told us.

No other holiday provides the fun and festivities like Halloween! Although we don’t sell anything specifically for Halloween, we love to see what the Etsy community delivers during October. From choosing the perfect costume to planning the perfect party, Etsy sellers have some of the best ideas around and shopping on Etsy is never more fun than it is in the fall. Go Etsy and get in the spirit!
We love to go all out on our costumes, visit haunted attractions, and see the creative decorations in our community.
After a long night of thrills and treats, kick off your shoes and enjoy your favorite spirit in style! We encourage responsible enjoyment of spirits in moderation and good company. Cheers to all of the responsible adults who make Halloween a fun and enjoyable holiday across the USA!

We are American, and loved trick or treating when the kids were little. But we traveled around a lot and lived in countries where trick-or-treating didn’t happen. In those cases we would have a big fun Halloween party, inviting neighbors and friends of many nationalities who were all too eager to wear a silly costume, bob for apples and drink cider.

I haven’t really ever been into Halloween as such. When I was young, occasionally people would come to the house trick or treating and we would give them some lollies. I don’t tend to celebrate Halloween but since many people do in other places I made these Halloween themed gift tags!

I LOVE Halloween! My Dad used to make our costumes, carved the pumpkins, and thoroughly enjoyed the handing out candy to all the trick or treaters! I made these spider earrings to go along with a witchy costume on Halloween.

My husband and I LOVE Halloween! When the kids were younger and we lived in town (we live in the country now) our house had the most creepy decorations around and people would drive from all over to see our house. We tried to do something different every year and it was a big event. The kids loved helping and now they decorate or do something similar at their own houses.

Eventually we moved and now we live in the country so no one is around to see anything, I miss doing all the decorations so what I do now is decorate my Etsy Shop Banner, my Avatar wears a witch hat, and I also decorate other online places like Facebook banners, etc.

Halloween was a fun time of year when my children were little! The selection of their costumes, parties at school and receiving greeting cards from family, all added to the excitement!  We live in Michigan, so we always had to be prepared for cold weather while trick or treating—sometimes their costumes were covered by winter coats!

We found this Gurley Witch Candle at an antique show this spring and were excited to list her in our Shop:

I think people love Halloween because it is a fun way to be scared, and be someone else for a night. I love to see all the little ones in their cute outfits, and I love Fall décor. Since my kids don’t trick or treat anymore, we have to find other ways to enjoy the Fall holiday, so we decorate. I love Fall/Halloween décor, like my painted sugar skull plate.

I absolutely love decorating for Halloween and live in a neighborhood where people enjoy decorating their yards and homes. I have always enjoyed creating my own decorations and have combined my love for vintage and Halloween into one this year!

We’ve only started getting in to Halloween, as we’re in Australia. My daughter is 2.5 now and is beginning to discover the fun of dressing up, so I think we’ll really be able to enjoy it this year, but nothing too scary while she’s young. I created this invitation for those who like a spookier tone to their Halloween parties!

Halloween has always been a fun time in my house growing up! My husband and I just bought a house and can’t wait to decorate our front porch for all the trick or treaters to come around. These pumpkins from my shop will definitely be on my front porch for Halloween time:
