Tell us about yourself.

I’m a 27-year-old mother of a 2-year-old little girl and a wife. Originally from Adelaide, South Australia but recently moved to Melbourne, Victoria for hubby’s work. I love to crochet and learned to crochet from my mother-in-‘love’ about 6 years ago. I also love to sing and have recently joined our new church’s music team. My favourite season would have to be Spring as I love all the flowers that start blooming but also the weather is usually perfect, not too hot and not cold.mgpcreations1

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

I opened my Etsy store February 2015 after I had such a positive reaction about the baby blankets I had made for my friends who were having babies. I decided to open an Etsy store as hobby because I crochet to relax and ran out of room to store my creations. I am hoping I can keep being a stay at home mum as I am enjoying it immensely and can’t imagine going back to part-time work and not seeing my daughter as much. My family as well as crocheting are my passions and I would love to have them both as much as possible!mgpcreations2

Tell us a bit about your products.

All my items I make are made from the heart. I love everything I make as I don’t think I could sell something I wasn’t happy to have myself. I can be very critical on my work and a lot of projects have been started over numerous times before I am happy with them. My products are mainly aimed towards babies, children and women with a range of baby blankets, scarves, mug cosies and boot cuffs. As well as some home decor and nursery decor like floor rugs and bunting. One of my favourite products would have to be my mermaid tail blankets which is something I have always wanted to make!mgpcreations3

What inspires your work?

I love working with wool because you can get so many different types and colours, I can mix and match all different things and I can be creative with it and think outside of the box. There are so many colours that I would not have pictured working together but have ended up looking great. I enjoy watching it all come together and seeing how the colours and patterns I chose work out.mgpcreations4

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

I hope that my Etsy store can keep growing to allow me to keep being a stay at home mum. This year I hope to grow my stock numbers and expand the products that I offer.mgpcreations5

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

I think my store stands out more than other similar stores because you can get some of what you need for a newborn baby in one place. You can find a blanket, beanie and booties sets, bunting and floor rugs for your baby and nursery without having to look around. I also keep my prices as low as I can to fit every budget.mgpcreations6

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

Thankfully my products can be made almost anywhere so my workspace can change. I mainly work in the lounge room on the couch but I also do some work in the car if we go on a longer trip. I love that I am able to be flexible with where I can work.mgpcreations7

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

One of the biggest things I have learned since opening my store is how important good photography is for your product. First impressions are so important for an online store and it took me about 8 months to realize this.mgpcreations8

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Just go for it. Even if you’re not 100% sure what you are doing just give it a go and you will learn as you go. I am always tweaking and changing things and always learning new things. Joining an Etsy team was the best thing I could have done. They are full of people who have been doing this for a very long time and they are so happy to help and share their knowledge with anyone who needs help.mgpcreations9

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

My daughter takes up a lot of my spare time. She is a bundle of energy and fun (well most days as 2 year olds can be very unpredictable). Crocheting is my main hobby as it relaxes me and I really enjoy the feeling I get when I finish making something.mgpcreations10

The unique part about my shop is the design patterns are my own creations. I have even listed some of my art quilts which have been selected and shown in international quilt competitions.

So looking forward to CIJ. I’ve been crafting for over 40 years, I have sold my ornaments here in Chicago at most of the major shows. I love the ease of Etsy, no more lugging tables and large totes to and from craft shows.

Hi I’m kind of new to the team, I joined last week, but have been incredibly busy listing new items, and now editing many for the CIJ Event. New for me this year will be Christmas ornaments – I have ordered supplies but they haven’t come yet – I am hopeful that they arrive before the event kicks off.
I sell mostly supplies, but I am also a jeweler and a Lapidary. I cut most of my own stones in my studio, and have recently purchased a diamond drill press so that I can make beads from my cabochons.
Etsy is my “Full Time” job now for three years, and I’ll never go back to working the grind, I LOVE it!!!

Made to Order Mermaid Tail

Hello
I joined the team early in the month, but have been on holidays before I had a chance to introduce myself.
I opened my Etsy Shop 3 years ago. initially I only sold handmade jewellery, but over the years I have added original art and art prints to my shop.
Presently I have a great range of products available.
My latest additions are art prints from ink drawings. These black and white drawings are dynamic and capture the movement of the subject.
This drawing of two girls dancing is one of my favourites.

Dancing Girls Modern Art Print

Hi all,
We’re so looking forward to taking part in our first ever Christmas In July (decking the halls as we type).
At Tread & Pedals we (Em and Ivan) handcraft fun and functional designs through re-purposing old bicycle parts. One of our favourite items would have to be our Cog & Chain Bottle Opener.
Our Bicycle Cog & Chain Bottle Opener is an essential for any bike or beer loving man’s pocket. The bike chain is silver soldered to the cog to form an extremely strong bottle opener. The bike chain is still movable so it easily fits inside your pocket, attach it to your key chain – so you are always ready to enjoy beer o’clock and pop open those ice-cold drinks.

I work with metals: lost wax castings in silver and bronze, fire enamels and a lot of new projects which are going to be realized…everything inspired by the Norse tradition and by Nature. This is one of my creation and my shop is Lukseh. Thank you!

Musical Conclusion – #CIJParty 2016

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

“Guest Blog Article: “Musical Conclusion” by Michelle Emma Kay of EmmaKayInks

What is your Christmas Inspiration?

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Christmas. The part I loved the most about it was singing Christmas carols. My mum played the piano and I sung the songs. We would practice for months in advance. Then on Christmas eve we would put on a performance for the family. I would often make and give out Christmas carol themed crafts at this time.

Musical Conclusion

I’d like to share three of my favourite Christmas songs:

‘Little drummer boy’ is one of the songs that my mum and I perfected together. She practiced it over and over to get the riff right. I practiced over and over to the par rum pa pum pum parts right.

I love that ‘Peace on earth’ is also included because this to me is one of the main messages of Christmas.

Here is the David Bowie and Bing Crosby version of the song.

Another favourite Christmas song of mine is ‘God rest ye merry gentlemen’. It’s also one that we performed for the family together.

One part of my Christmas obssession was learning the lyrics to every verse of every Christmas song. I can tell you that this one is a difficult one to remember with lots of verses.

I really like the melody of the song, the way that it dances along, up and then down again. I like that it references being saved and that gives me hope.

The last line of the chorus “tidings of comfort and joy” really does encapsulate Christmas doesn’t it?

The final song I would like to share is ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ by Mariah Carey.

Being a child of the 1990’s, I remember when it was released. I was a big fan of Mariah at the time and it is first and favourite Christmas pop song.

In particular, reminds me of the Christmas holidays after I finished high school (In Australia we have a long 5 week holiday over summer that includes Christmas). Each year when I hear it, it brings back on the excitement of Christmas.

It’s not just about whichever crush I have that year. It’s really expresses the celebration of that time of year for me.

I asked other Etsy sellers who are participating in Christmas In July what their favourite Christmas songs are and here are their answers.

Katrina from BygoneAllure says:

This got me thinking whether ‘Hallelujah’ (by Leonard Cohen) is a Christmas Song. And I concluded whilst I love it – it is less of a Christmas tune for me than ‘Amazing Grace’.

Bono singing it is mighty fine and he sings the heart of it in this short piece.

Mallori from MGPCreations says:

I would say my favourite Christmas song is ‘O Holy Night’. I love the lyrics and love singing it every Christmas. Just brings the meaning of Christmas out and is such a powerful song.

So many good versions out on YouTube but you can’t go past a good Celine Dion cover.

Melissa from 89stitches says:

I would have to say my favourite christmas song is ‘All I want for Christmas is you’. It is from one of the sweetest and funniest movies “Love Actually”!

CarolaBartz from CarolaBartz says:

My favorite song is The Christmas Song’ by Nat King Cole.

I love it because it is kind of old fashioned and has a beautiful atmosphere – I can picture the chestnuts roasting on an open fire, the anticipation and the very special non-commercial Christmas mood. Plus, Nat King Cole’s voice is just delicious!

Sue from SuesAkornShop says:

My favourite song is ‘Silent Night’ and I love this version.

Christmas is more than just gifts and this song is a reminder of all Christmas is.

Dawn from DeeDeeDeesigns says:

I think it has to be ‘Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer’!

I love this version of the song sung by Australian children’s band The Wiggles because they came to fame when my (now adult) children were young – yes I have been to several concerts.

I also love it because it is an empowering song for children in terms of its overcoming ‘bullies’ message. It always brings a smile to my lips.

Flora from Littlegiftsofnature says:

‘God Bless Us Everyone’ is my favourite Christmas song.

Lovely the beautiful melody and meaningful lyrics. Mr. Bocelli’s voice is amazing. ‘Christmas Carol’ is always my favourite novel.

Corkycrafts from Corkycrafts says:

My favorite Christmas song is ‘Mele Kalikimaka’ (Merry Christmas) by Bing Crosby.

It reminds me of being in Hawaii on Christmas day fond memories.

Alicia from AliciasFindings says:

My favorite Christmas song is ‘Feliz Navidad’.

I have loved this song since my middle school days (junior high). It is so upbeat and fun, which is what the season is to me.

Shelly from ShellysSelectSalvage says:

My favorite Christmas song is ‘I want a hippopotamus for Christmas’.

I like this song, but it’s actually my husband’s favorite, which I think is so cute since he is a big burly guy that adores this song. On our first Christmas I found (on Etsy) a vintage Christmas ornament that plays this song. We keep it on a shelf year round.
