Try A Little Leather

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Leather can be used in so many ways; clothing, furniture, accessories and so much more. Do you use leather in the items you create?

We want to know what you have that is leather or has a little bit of leather in it. Tell us all about your item. How is it used, who is it for, etc.

Nancy from EponasCrystals says I use a lot of leather in my jewelry. The soft deerskin leather strips are particularly useful for finishing necklaces, like this turquoise necklace. I also like using them in bracelet cuffs.

Richard and Tatiana from DesignstheLimit states at Design’s the Limit, we specialize in design and personalization of wood, glass, crystal, stone, and other materials including leatherette. In addition to being a more moral choice, it has a number of additional advantages to leather and does not crack or fade. Choose any of our designs or submit your own, leatherette engraves clearly and is available in a variety of colors. We have added wallets, business card holders, and luggage tags of leatherette in our shop and have received a great response for our clients. Leatherette requires little maintenance in comparison to leather and does not contain animal products, and is therefore seen as an ethical alternative to leather by vegans and animal rights enthusiasts.

Favorite Fashion Trends

Contributor post by Catherine from DesignsbyCnC

Fashion can be considered as our most popular form of expression.  Our fashion style varies greatly over a period of time.  Several factors such as our social class, age, occupation and location also affects our style sense.

Fashion is influenced by pop culture, and the ever-changing style of clothes worn by celebrities.  A trend in fashion occurs when others mimic or emulate this clothing style.

My favorite fashion trend is the styles of the 1940’s.  This time period was long before I was born, but I have always loved the more tailored style which highlighted the hour-glass silhouette.  With the start of   WWII, and a strict rationing on fabric, dresses in the 1940’s became shorter.  During this time the two piece suit known as a victory or utility suit became popular.  Women could mix and match skirts, blouses, and jackets for a new outfit every day. After the war ended, the suit style remained popular due to its comfort and practicality.

After the war ended, a new fashion style began to emerge which embraced femininity, with rounded shoulders, shapely bust lines, closely defined waistlines, slightly padded skirts, and full, billowing skirts that hung just below the calves.  Fashion in the 1940’s was a good mix of comfort and glamour.

I asked the members of Etsy’s Christmas In July Team to share their favorite fashion trends and to highlight a fashion item from their shop.

msmadmax from madmaxshop says:

Fashion constantly refers to the past for inspiration.

The shop has been gearing up for spring and a great deal of fashion trends for each season borrow from decades past.

SPRING 2016 FASHION TREND Romantic Ruffles
This season, wear your ruffles soft and loose, cascading in tiers and falling in gathers. Whether in suede, silk, or raffia, let the fabric dictate the shape.

Sheer Delight…Hints of 80s nostalgia…

Etsy’s got you covered, as long as you plan ahead and order in time. Here are some unique finds to really set your costume apart from the rest.

As long as we are talking about planning ahead, why not sew your own costume?

A black cape is a great way to start a costume. This one, with its beautiful clasp can transform you into a vampire, a witch or even a medieval lady.  With its versatility you will be able to use it for many years.

Treasury Challenge Winner June – madmaxshop

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

On Etsy many shop owners curate treasuries. A treasury is a curated shop gallery comprised  of 16 items from any shop.  Most of the time they are done by theme, color or anything you can imagine.

The Christmas in July team has challenges to create treasuries centered on themes of our choosing. We then pick a winner based on views, creativity and the like.

The June winner is madmaxshop who loves vintage fashion of all kinds!

1 and 2. What made you start your shop on Etsy and what got you into Vintage?

A love for fashion. Upon realizing the younger generation’s appreciation and demand for vintage had increased in the last decade I decided to open a shop offering unique and one-of-a kind vintage items that could not be found anywhere else. New York is a great city and it is an ultimate resource for the finest in vintage fashion and accessories.

il_170x135.585852515_2i16

il_170x135.470807107_8wt4

3. What Era of Vintage appeals to you most?

Despite the hardships of WWII, the 1940’s were still a brilliant decade for fashion. Joan Crawford’s shoulder pads…Christian Dior’s New Look…statement jewels…power dressing.

Both men and women retailored outfits leftover from the 30’s. Remake what’s old (upcycle)…just like today. As more American men were being drafted, women at home remade their left behind clothing into slim-fitting pants, blouses, and jackets…Katherine Hepburn’s timeless style. Less was the norm and no more unnecessary undergarments. Shoulder pads added interest to the silhouette and as decades followed, 40s fashion made a repeat performance influencing fashion in the late 70s and early 80s…Joan Collins, Dynasty!

il_170x135.604664157_c6ag

4. What, if any crafts do you like to do or would love to try?

I would like to try jewelry design with inspiration evolving from the vintage mid-century statement jewels. Bare, curving bouquets, bows and fans of the 1940s and 1950s. This style is known as Retro Modern.
