What Makes A House A Home – #CIJParty 2016

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

There is so much that makes a house a home…the people, the ambiance and most especially the decor. One piece can change the whole flavor of a room.

Here at Christmas in July we want to see your home decor items and a little bit about them.

Annie from DesignedbyAnneliese says when i think of house decor, I think or pictures or ornaments. These birds are a little different. I made these felt birds which originally I had as house decor at Christmas. But they could be used to decorate the house any time just by hanging them on a door handle or a hook!

Angara Seeds from AngsanaSeedsPhoto said when I think of home decor, I think of the decorative throw pillows that complement the rooms.

Stock Lane Studio from StockLaneStudio says for students heading off to college or young adults starting out in their first apartments, making a dorm, studio or apartment into a home can be challenging. Along with our higher priced fine art photography, we offer prints and printables that are fun and interesting, but won’t break the bank.

Our ‘Enter at your own Bliss” printable sets a welcoming tone for any home.

The photograph for this typographical art was taken while visiting the gorgeously medieval Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz), nestled in the hills above the Moselle River in Germany.

Lia Russo from Ghirlandiamo says I think each home has a particular accent, which expresses the woman’s personality living there: furniture, colors, accessories and decor, all that talks about her.

For this reason almost all my crafts are one of a kind, they are unique as each woman is.
For example, this decor, that can be used either as wreath and as centerpiece, talks about a simple woman, loving open air, nature and tiny meadow flowers. Doesn’t it?

Julie Siomacco from SouthernCharmWreaths states lanterns have become very popular in home decor over the past couple of years. You can use lanterns in your staging on places like fireplace mantles, kitchen counters, tables, pianos, etc. Not only can you put candles inside the lantern but try filling them with other things such as pine cones, bird’s nest, small plants, Easter eggs, etc. There are so many styles of lanterns to choose from these days and finding one to fit your decor shouldn’t be a problem. To add seasonal flair to your lantern, try attaching a lantern swag (flower arrangement made for lanterns). This adds a special touch to your home decor throughout the season or holiday.

Dawn Whitehand from DeeDeeDeesigns states that I believe a large part of making a house a home is the sharing and caring of the family members, and one of the best ways to encourage this is through food. And unique, handmade vessels can make the family meal even more special.

Dana Hamant from LilybeanzBowtique says I think the most important part of a home is a first impression. I switch out the wreath on my front door with each season. I want my home to be welcoming to others. I love having people over and entertaining. What better way to impress them when they first walk in the door!

Michelle Emma Kay from EmmaKayInks discusses that there are many historic Art Deco buildings in my home town of Katoomba, Australia. When I get off at the train station and walk up the ramp to step out onto the street, I always feel strongly “ahhh it’s so good to be home”. I’ve only been living here for 2 years, but we used to visit a lot when I was a child.

This drawing is very much influenced by both the feeling and aesthetic of Art Deco. I think buildings with these features feel more homely because they speak of endurance and have built up an energy as people have used them over time.

In this colder climate, one can just be grateful for having a roof over your head and a fire in the corner. The light shining through the stained glass windows is a bonus!

Carola Bartz from CarolaBartz said there are many things that make a house a home, and the most important ones you can’t buy – it’s the people who live here. However, we can set up a certain atmosphere. That for me is often expressed in the wall decoration – which color is your wall, is there wall paper, wood? What hangs on the wall? I personally love to hang photographs that speak to me. That can be an old barn, a beautiful sunset, a dramatic landscape, an animal.

This 8 x 10 photo print of a sunset on the Oregon Coast is a favorite of mine. It holds a special moment and atmosphere. It can set the mood of a room. I see this in a masters bedroom or a quiet corner in a family room. A meditation room if you are lucky to have one. I even see it in a cozy breakfast nook.

Catherine Caramanica from BlkBttrflyDsgns said I have had these candles in my home for years. Literally. Yes, they still light. There are all colors here, sizes and beeswax too. I used to love eat dinner by candlelight with or without company. Maybe others can enjoy them the way I once did and still do!

Sue from MissIvyVintage says I think a house becomes a home when family and friends gather around the dining table, relaxed and having lots of fun! I have so many memories of these times! I imagine these gracing such a festive occasion and making memories.

Toys Of Yesterday

Contributor post by Catherine from DesignsbyCnC

The children of the world have been playing with some form of toy or another since the dawn of time.   The earliest toys were made from materials found in nature, such as rocks, sticks, and clay.  Before the 20th century, children did not have much time to play.  They were expected to help their parents doing simple jobs around the house or in the fields.

As our attitudes toward children began to change, toys became more widespread. Children began to be seen as people and that they had a right to flourish and enjoy their childhood. Many new toys were invented in the 20th century such as tin cars, train sets and teddy bears.  As wages were rising steadily, working-class families were now able to afford toys for their children.  Toy manufacturers were able to provide the supply to meet this rising demand due to improved industrial techniques of precision engineering and mass production.

Intellectual emphasis was also increasingly being placed on the importance of a wholesome and happy childhood.  Toys have played an important role in human development.  They provide entertainment while fulfilling an educational role.

I posed the question “What was your favorite childhood toy?” to members of the Christmas In July Team.

The Global Vintage Shop shared this:

Kids in the 1960’s went skateboarding on smaller planks with steel wheels!
In the streets, on the sidewalks, down driveways…it meant hours of fun.

Ingrida from Live Past Vintage had this to say:

Rubber squeaking toys were “must have” in each Soviet home in 1970-80’s. They were hard to find in shops and every second soviet kid (and not only kid) was passionate collector of squeekers! I was not exception here, lol!

Tools of the Craft: Supply Shops for Crafters and Artisans

Contributor post by Sheila from BeadyEyedBird

I’ve seen a poster on Facebook about handcrafting– and I really appreciate it. It says: When you buy handmade, you not only get art, you get a piece of the artist’s heart. There are so many reasons to buy handmade instead of buying a store-bought or manufactured item. You support crafters and artisans, which is critical; you get high-quality items built to last; your item is one-of-a-kind and really special; you support the environment by choosing something not made in a waste-producing factory; and maybe best of all, you avoid crowded stores!

This post is a special shout-out for our wonderful Etsy Supply Shops — as they provide the tools, inspiration and opportunity for so many handcrafters. Read about what they offer and how they support the spirit of ‘artisan-made’, entrepreneurship and the creative life-style.

I love what you have written here…it’s like you read my thoughts! The way you describe art as well as the environment, I feel so equally the same

I have a shop section for creative/repurpose supply and it is difficult to choose one item. Even though I don’t have the bulk of my inventory listed, I have a few repurposed supplies, so I will choose the scrap metal listing.

It is an example of how an artist can create something extremely unique which could be in the form of a robot sculpture, a mixed media piece, or an assemblage piece.

This listing is also an example of how items once designated for the landfill can now be used for creative projects

Crochet Week

Contributor post by Alicia from AliciasFindings

Crochet Week is the 2nd week in March and is all about celebrating all things crocheted.

Here at Christmas in July we wanted to see all your crocheted works.

Beverly from designbcb  says this shawl can make a boho or elegant statement depending on what you wear with it.

Made with 100% acrylic fiber, it is easy care with a soak in warm, soapy water and spread it out to air dry.

This is a great gift for your bridal party done in a color they can use again and again. It is also a nice wrap for a prom or homecoming outfit. For less formal outings, it is a perfect wrap for strolling downtown and casual settings where you want some flair.

It is a generous 77×34 so wrap it around shoulders or waist for different looks.
Find it in the color ‘lace’ here.

Melissa R from missy69 states I love to crochet! I have not sold a lot of my crochet items, but I keep making them because I enjoy it. I donate items, that don’t sell after a while, to Newborns in Need. I also will be donating to the Southern Baptist Adoption Homes, soon. Of course crochet items make great gift ideas too. I made this lime green, and hot pink baby blanket and hat set, just about a month ago. I love the colors, definitely a favorite combo of mine.

Karen Clayton from KraftyShop said about 2 years ago a friend of mine asked me to make this skulls beanie hat for her in dark orchid and pewter gray. I was nervous when I first started to make it but it was a success! I had never worked on such an intricate pattern before.

Well, after making it for her, I wondered if I should add it to my etsy shop. After some deliberation I decided why not? After the first few months of it being listed and not selling, I decided to add many color choices and Viola! They started selling. Slowly at first but now they are my most popular item, so needless to say I am happy with my decision to add this listing to my shop. I will most likely be making these and other items for customers during crochet week.

#CIJParty – Dazzling Blue – Pantone Fashion Color For Spring 2014

Contributor post by Michelle of EviesToolEmporium

Earlier today I shared my thoughts about trends with you.

Color trends are a wonderful way to celebrate the seasons! According to Pantone one of the top colors for Spring 2014 is Dazzling Blue.

Dazzling Blue is a scintillating polar opposite of Placid Blue.

FCR-SPR2014-Womens-Intro-MainImg

Earlier this year we featured Placid Blue items from the EtsyChristmasinJuly Team here on the CIJ blog.

Members of the EtsyChristmasinJuly Team have many Dazzling Blue items in their shops! Here are a few!

At the end of this post is a big reveal!

Amy from BeadsandThreadsbyAmy makes a gift every year for her students who work for her during one hour a day as her Teacher’s Aide. They help grade daily assignments, pass back papers, keep her organized, and that type of thing. This year, she created monogrammed purses for all of them. The young lady who received this one exclaimed, “You should sell these!” Amy held in the giggle, but absolutely loves these little pouch bags.

Majorie from mscenna came upon these vintage chunky pearl beads and couldn’t quite decide what to make but had a necklace in mind. When Majorie found the blue vintage beads and all she could think of was “something borrowed and something blue”.  She put them together in hopes of finding a bride who wanted a vintage inspired necklace!

Elizabeth from ElizabethLovesGlass found a pair of dazzling blue buttons in a thrift store and fell in love with them. Elizabeth knew she had to add them to a project. Then she found blue roving wool that was a perfect match. The inspiration to make a felted collar was all in place. Elizabeth loves adding collars to simple outfits to add a bit of warmth and change the look. This collar is reversible, so it’s two looks in one.

Betty Travell from LadySnooks shares that this piece is one of the few remaining pieces of dichroic glass she has that her brother made. He hasn’t made any for some time due to health issues. Betty loves the center which looks almost like a window into the heart of the pendant. The blues are some of the most striking colors she has seen in glass.

CartoCreative shares that Paris is one of the most interesting cities she has ever been to. Along with her boyfriend (the other half of CartoCreative) she went backpacking through Europe for several months after university and Paris was an amazing way to start and end to their trip. The beginning of their trip was a little rocky. When they arrived in Paris, her backpack did not, so all she had was the dress and heels she wore on the plane while they stayed at a hostel in one of the sketchiest neighborhoods in the city. Since she had to replace all of her things, they wound up exploring more native Parisian areas that they may not have seen otherwise. Ending the trip in the same city it started allowed them to do things they missed during the first week and was a perfect way to conclude their holiday. Their Paris map was a slightly later addition to their shop, but not for a lack of trying. Paris was one of the first maps they started working on, as it was one of the places they had spent the most time in, but Paris is enormous, so they had to put the map aside for a few months. After many, many requests, they finished this first version of the map and it became one of their most popular sellers, in no doubt due to the memories that city helps create.

Lisa from  InsomniacTreasures was enjoying the beautiful weather at the small town art walk she took part in recently. Lisa was stationed next to an artist who had recently been to Tahiti and was working on a bright tropical scenery painting. She decided to sit on the bench next to her booth and do a little creating of her own. This piece just came out – dazzling turquoise blue and a shell found at a local beach. Guess they were in sync.

Patricia and Rebecca from northandsouthshabby share that as always, when “on the hunt” for treasures, their hearts always beats a bit faster when they  spy something they know will compliment their shop’s items. So it was when they spied this beautiful “dazzling blue” delft mug. The color was perfect, and the whaling ship, representing an industry so intricately embedded in the history of southern New England where Patricia resides, made it a perfect find!

Linda from ThingsUpcycled tells us that her washer pendants happened by accident. Linda loves vibrant colors and when she first started doing washer jewelry she didn’t put embellishments on them. One day she happened to have some laying on the table where she was working and one dropped out of the bag and fell on a washer. It landed in the perfect spot and she looked at it and a light bulb went off in her head. So this is how her creations came to be. Linda loves working with ink and the colors they create. What can she say except she’s always looking for other inspirations that include ink.

Wendy CN from CardNotions offers this 3D Butterfly card that depicts the red-spotted purple butterfly. The beautiful iridescent, dazzling blue color was imprinted in my mind many years ago when she saw one alight on one of their backpacks. Amazingly, the underside of the wings is a very different contrasting color, but just as beautiful, making this the perfect butterfly to apply her double sided printing and pop-up technique. There is also an original poem that was written specifically for this card, for Mothers Day: “Thank you for wonder, color, and light; For new beginnings and gentle touches; For wings that ride the morning air, and send my thoughts alight.”

Jenni from DayDreamsSunshine created this gorgeous bag made from fabric reclaimed from a charity shop and the print reminds her of gorgeous sunny days wandering by the beach, discovering little markets and stopping for tea and cake. Jenni was inspired to make this bag big enough to carry all those essentials for a summers day!

Ken and Donna from WowWeeCreations share that this dazzling blue arrowhead pendant was knapped by Ken. Ken enjoys looking at old bottles to see what he can make from them. Glass is quite a challenge to make into an arrowhead. He always liked looking for arrowheads when he was a kid, so the arrowhead pendant was a fun and interesting piece to make. They think it turned out rather lovely and they hope you think so too!

Muttix asks the question what do you get when you make a hair accessory inspired by wildlife in the state of Texas? A BIG dazzling blue butterfly hair tie, of course! Everything IS bigger in Texas! She has been on a roll lately making butterfly hair ties for her shop. This dazzling blue addition is the latest in the line. The deep, navy blue center reminds her of a deep diving pool where hot summer days are passed hanging out and trying to cool off. The dazzling blue outer edge of the wings is the color of a clear blue Texas sky. All in all, something that captures the essence of the warmer months here in the heart of Texas!

Wendy from WoodNotions loves colorful art glass, so for this wood-cut and stained glass piece, she started with the beautiful glass and designed the woodcut around it. The dazzling blue as well as other shades of blue makes the Sea Otter look so much at home, partially submerged in the sea of blue glass.

DeserDabbler tells us that these dazzling blue earrings are made from sodalite, a natural stone, and Czech glass. Her jewelry is inspired by nature and usually is made of only natural stones. However, these earrings combine the best of both natural stones and dazzling blue glass.

June Holidays – International Picnic Day – June 18th

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

International Picnic Day celebrates the gathering together outdoors to eat and enjoy one another’s company – The Picnic. The true origin of International Picnic Day is unknown, but can be traced back to the end of the French Revolution and the Victorian Era. Picnics were ways for people to escape the restrictions of etiquette and formality. As an informal food holiday, there are few rules and lots of options. International Picnic Day is observed on June 18th each year.

Sounds like a fun day and time!!
Sunny days, good food….

Elizabeth Wellburn of ElizabethLovesGlass says:

Pink lemonade is part of all my favorite picnics. I make mine by adding a bit of cranberry juice to a blend of fresh squeezed lemons and water with honey! And it’s even more beautiful in delicate pink glass punch-style cups.

Ingrida of LivePastVintage tells me:

You need a beautiful tray for all your snacks!

From her other shop feltinga:

She says how can it be an outdoor party without a cup of good smelling coffee.

Carolyn T of Butterflykilns lets me know:

To me, summer picnics in the south were always about Old Bay Shrimp boils, potato salad and coleslaw! This would be perfect for these kinds of goodies.

Who doesn’t love a picnic? Good food, friends and great times outdoors! Go have one today!

Eco-Friendly Father’s Day

Do you know a father who loves the earth and would appreciate and Eco-friendly Father’s Day gift? I know one for sure. My husband. He’s an Environmental Science teacher. Not only has he reached his students, but he has also taught and inspired me! I’ve grown to really love and care for our environment, inspired by his passion. One way I live it is by using yarn that is Eco-friendly and Fairtrade when I design a new crochet pattern for my Etsy shop. For this Father’s Day, I thought it would be great to see and share what others on the Etsy CIJ team have to offer for an Eco-friendly Father’s Day.

recycled coffee cup sleeve - SunshineMakings

Which Dad? The one who loves his coffee.

Shop: Sunshine Makings
