This week our Pinterest leaders Nancy, Kristy Jo and Barbara share with you the value of social media, how to develop a social media plan, how to interact with others on social media and so much more!
Please introduce yourself and the other team leaders who are part of your respective social media site.
We are the social media team leaders for the Etsy Christmas in July Pinterest group.
Kristy Jo www.etsy.com/people/KristyJo67
What social media site are you team leaders for?
We manage the team Pinterest account.
What is the CIJ Pinterest site and handle?
We can be found on Pinterest at Etsy Christmas In July:
Tell us about Pinterest.
Pinterest is a website that allows you to “pin” things online, just as you would pin them on a real life
bulletin board, but instead, Pinterest saves all of your pins on your account so that you can access them
easily. Plus, you can follow friends on Pinterest and “repin” things that they have already pinned on your
Pinterest boards or browse a live feed of items that are being pinned by strangers when you’re searching
What do you find valuable about Pinterest?
Pinterest is a valuable tool for show casing your items and gaining new followers. Pinterest has over 100
millions users. Just think of the possibilities! Plus it can be a great organizing tool as well.
What kind of content is most effective on Pinterest?
I have found that almost anything goes on Pinterest. You can pin your items, tutorials, inspirational pins,
beautiful images, etc.
How can Pinterest be part of your business strategy?
Use Pinterest just as you would Instagram. Post items once or twice a day. Evenings seem to get more
re-pins. When others follow you, follow back. Soon you will have loads of followers. Also searching for
users with similiar pins and following them can get you followers as well.
It’s important to have a social media plan. What can you achieve on Pinterest?
To pin new items on your shop board, share this on different boards, also on different group boards give you the possibility to achieve a lot of followers.
How do you develop this social media plan?
Getting started is easy! Just create an account on Pinterest. Set up your board and start pinning!
Here is a help guide developed by Pinterest to get you started
What is the most creative way to find new followers on Pinterest?
More followers can help you get more likes, repins, comments, clicks and impressions.
This can then help drive traffic and increase sales in your shop. I think the magic to find new followers is to pin a lot and share a lot. Helpful is to connect with your other social media networks. So your friends on Facebook get your followers on Pinterest.
How do you interact with others on Pinterest?
When others follow you, follow back. Soon you will have loads of followers. Also searching for users with
similiar pins and following them can get you followers as well
What else would you like to share about Pinterest?
Pinterest is great to share the shop items of our team members. So it’s a very fine marketing tool. The Christmas In July Team has a Pinterest account with different boards. Team members have a variety of ways to be featured on Pinterest. Please see the team forum for opportunities.

A best-seller can be defined as a product that is extremely popular and has sold in very large numbers.
One of the most important requirements of a product is that it must fulfill a need or want. The product should make life easier, better or fulfill a dream. Another aspect to consider is the market for the product. Are you targeting a mass- market or a niche market? Sometimes targeting a mass-market can be beneficial if you want your product featured on television and want everyone to be your potential customers. It is easier to sell your products to a niche market because there is often less competition, plus you are able to focus your marketing and advertising on a pre-determined demographic group.
The products that we sell in our Etsy shops are a huge factor in whether or not we succeed. Creating the right product will greatly increase our profits. I asked members of Etsy’s Christmas In July Team to share the best-selling product from their shop and to explain why it appeals to their target market.
My best selling item for awhile now has been the (usually color enhanced) pendant beads I sell as a supply. I have hardly been able to keep up lately. I think people find the different types, colors, shapes and also decent pricing to be a reason to come back.
I would like to say that the focus of my shop is supposed to be for cancer awareness and I have had a hard time keeping enough stock lately. I hope to be able to grow this side of our store this spring and summer to offer more, so that I can donate a percentage of sales, which is my goal. As a cancer survivor who could not ever find the colors I wanted I would love to offer more support, positive messages, faith and inspirational things that are also affordable.
There is one product that we offer that we have sold more than any other and it is our personalized cheese board set. We complete orders for our cheese boards for weddings, anniversaries, showers, birthdays, Mother’s Day, housewarming, and any gift giving occasion. We also have multiple design options for couple’s monograms and family monograms depending on the occasion. Custom orders accepted for any design, bulk pricing available for any quantity, and International shipping available for any location. Make every gift you give a personal experience at Design’s the Limit!
Stock Lane Studio had this to share:
It may not be in season now, but this ‘Bikes in Snow” card sells all year long!
I think it appeals to lots of different shoppers: students, travelers, bike enthusiasts, environmentalists, and lovers of snow! I captured this image in Munich, Germany while strolling around this city with my husband and children.
My printable calendars have sold more than any other item, in particular the portrait orientation chevron calendar. I started making my own printable calendars a few years ago, but I didn’t start selling them here until 2013. I was surprised how many I sold, but it seems a lot of people love to print at home. I love paper crafting of any sort, so for me it’s fun to make and print them myself.
2016 Printable Chevron Calendar
I guess my one of my best sellers is the fimo fruit rosary. I have custom made some too with fruits of their choice. I love customising!
They have been given for christening gifts to be used as a wall decoration. I don’t think they are suitable for small children though. The fimo is too tempting to chew.
My best-selling item is a very simple, useful item for bowlers. These little towels are great quality and reasonably priced, which I believe is responsible for their popularity. We have made these for individuals, bowling teams, and entire bowling leagues. They are a great and fun little gift!
My all time best seller is my personalised heart print. It’s perfect as a housewarming, wedding, civil union, commitment ceremony or engagement party gift. It’s a print that can be personalised however you like, over the years I’ve added children’s names, wedding/important dates and commitment ceremony vows along the bottom of the print. I truly believe this print is my best seller simply because I live by the words love is love.
With vintage you don’t have any one particular item that sells but you can get people buying the same type of item every time you list something like it. In my case, I have sold many refrigerator dishes. First produced in 1925, they came in bright primary colors, clear glass and colored glass. People like them today because they last, if you don’t drop them of course. I have also had people tell me they don’t like to store food in plastic and that the refrigerator dish is safer storage option and good for the environment.
The American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) was founded on September 22, 1949 “to bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership; education, networking support and national recognition.”
Here at Etsy Christmas in July we want to know what advice, resources and knowledge you would give to women starting out in the business world?
First and foremost, my advice would be to manage your time well. I see too many fellow lady entrepreneurs get totally overwhelmed by the amount of work and fizzle out before they get to the good stuff. There are a lot of great self-help books and blogs to help you manage your time well. I’m particularly fond of Laura Vanderkam. She provides some great insight and it’s very easy to take the information and mold it so that it fits your own life.
The second would be to buy The Small Business Bible by Steven Strauss. It’s structured perfectly so that you can go through the book and write down everything that you need to get done to get your business up and running. He covers everything from licensing to taxes. This book really helped me get my jumble of thoughts organized so that I could move forward productively. I read the entire book before I made any moves, and it made the whole process of getting started so much easier.
Lastly, make time for yourself and your family always. It is so easy to get caught up in your business and forget about the important things. There was a time in my life where all I focused on was my business, and weeks would go by without any quality time spent with my loved ones. We go into business so that we can have freedom to live the lives we want. Never forget the bigger picture, and that there is always time to check one more thing off your to-do list tomorrow, but your loved ones can disappear from your life without a seconds notice.
Before you start, ask yourself if this is what you REALLY want to do. If the honest, heartfelt answer is “Yes!” then go ahead.
Later on, when you get the bad times, the obstacles, the negative people, none of that will matter because deep inside you is the memory of that “Yes!” to keep you going.
I so agree with both postings!! I have fallen into the trap of forgetting the bigger picture too many times. I never want to forget what is the most important in life – and though I love my store, that is not where it is at – family is always more important. TAKE THE TIME – while you’ve got the time.
I wish I had started with more of a plan, but I did not – and that is why reading the advice of others who either had a great plan that worked helps, and also those that have failed – sometimes more than once – but picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and started again! It is all in the outlook and attitude! You cannot expect others to support your dream – you have to support your own dream and just be happy if someone else also does.

Join the Christmas In July team as we celebrate August – New Arrivals.
I love this little boho chic sweater and matching headband! The colors are perfect together, and coordinate perfectly with any outfit. The ruffle along the yoke adds a girly feature. This sweater will take your favorite baby through any season. The matching headband has a nice stretch to fit easily on baby’s head and the flower can float along the headband to position on either side, or top, of the head.
I really don’t want to make Santa hats for Christmas, so am making hats in Christmas colors that can be worn for more than a few days. This one is for under 6 months. I make most of my items for children from Caron simply soft wool since it has a sheen to it that I like, it is very soft and cuddly, and it is made in the USA.
This is a Vintage pattern (NOT the finished product). It has to be sewn. This is a cute dress for someone’s young girl. This was a pattern given to me (there were a lot of them) by my friend’s family. They were getting the house ready for an estate sale.
This vintage blouse I found in a Palm Springs Thrift store. It has an awesome historical print of compass sometimes called a wind-rose, is a figure on a compass, map, nautical chart or monument used to display the orientation of the cardinal directions—North, East, South and West—and their intermediate points. Just amazing and one-of-a kind item!
In keeping with what is in my heart, I have been starting to make more things related to cancer awareness. I do not want to charge much for these things as I want them available to everyone – and so this is the part of the shop where my heart is at the most and where I am expanding and always looking for new products and ideas. I have many plans in the works for adding much to this section by early fall. This keeps me on the right path in life and grateful every day!
I have always been interested in actually being able to create the type of wonderful flowers I saw everyday growing up in a 10,000 square foot silk flower business. I have combined this with my love of all things that glow in the dark and 40 years of working with different clays to bring you this line of fun forever flowers to wear and share!
I love making friendship bracelets, they take my mind off my worries knot by knot, and I also love experimenting and trying out new patterns and color combinations. I consider that Every Knot is a Prayer, every purchase is a little contribution to my son’s treatment, who was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 2 years. He still undergoes chemotherapy, and thankfully responds well to it. He’s 6th birthday will be on the 18th of August!
Hi! I’d like to share my Yellow Duck Coffee Mug Cozy. I just created him this week. I’ve had owls, penguins and pandas for over a year now and since the owls and penguins are so popular I decided to add a yellow duck to my line! I am very happy with how he turned out, especially with the quacking beak. I think he would mainly be a gift for her but I could see him working for a man if I chose a more manly button to fasten him on with. He is a made to order item and I am able to customize him a bit like changing the background color if desired or using a different kind of button or even making the duck a different color. I could also give him sleepy eyes if someone preferred but I think ducks are usually though of as bright-eyed. Thanks for letting me share a little bit about Mr. Yellow Duck!!
I started making little wallets like this to have some small items to sell at craft shows. Not everyone attending a craft show can afford to purchase a quilt! The little wallets are great for holding credit cards, business cards, gift cards, transit passes and more. I use them as an attractive way to present a gift card as a present to friends and family. They have proven to be a great seller both at craft shows and in my Etsy shop.
I’ve just started making coordinating tissue cases, so this is my first listing to offer shoppers either the set or individual pieces.
Just in time for Back-to-School, this Keyboard & Mouse Wrist Pillow Rest is an excellent way to personalize that new dorm room and make sure your student is getting proper Ergonomic Relief from those hours of computer use doing homework.
Now offered individual or as a set. This set is filled with a combination of Flax seed & Rice for contour and comfort for any wrist. Use “as is”, or added comfort is easily achieved by heating in the microwave for soothing heat, or place in the freezer for cooling relief.
The Keyboard rest measures 16 x 3″ inches in Length & Width. This versatile size can adapt to either standard keyboard or across or in front of your laptop. Got a tense neck after hours of computer use? Just heat or cool this pack for instant relief!
The Mouse Rest measures 7 x 5″ inches in Length and Width (at its widest points). Unlike most on the market, this pack is designed with a curved indention allowing for added comfort and free mouse movement. When using it can either lay flat or “tip up” allowing the sides to come up around the wrist. Caution: You may not want to stop working at that computer – because “it feels so good!”
This “New” fun Leopard fabric pattern has been requested several times, so that tells me it is time to add it to more products in my shop. We have several other patterns available and always enjoy working with buyers for special requests. Contact me today and let’s get to personalizing that work space!
I went with my dogs and my partner to the Irish sea and it was a wonderful day in the sun.
We all brought something in this decoration, even my one dog found one driftwood. So it is for us a wonderful memory at a beautiful day at the sea!
Here’s a new product from my shop. I’ve been meaning to create and add some wall hangings to my shop.
The idea came from some customised mini floral wreaths that I did for a customer. The directions that I decide to take from this wreath are endless.
I’ve chosen pastel floral this time as winter is soon to finish here in Australia and we’ll soon be welcoming spring. These butter yellow, pale pink and pale blue are just perfect for it.
This was a really fun project that accidentally became a map. I was experimenting with different fonts and wanted to see what it would look like putting a whole bunch of them together. Obviously I’m obsessed with maps because that experiment turned into a map of the United States with each of the state initials in a different font.
This summer I went to an art store I have not previously been to and discovered they had a selection of very interesting papers. Instantly I got a bunch of ideas on how I could use them. The person packing them for me asked what I’m planning to do with them, and I told her I paint with watercolors. She said those are not really suitable for watercolors (they have a texture that would make it very difficult to paint on), but having a poor art teacher in the past, I learned to ignore “advice” that limits creativity. I knew I’d come up with a way to make this stuff work for me, even if it took some trial and error first.
And here’s the result: you could call it a mixed media project, because that’s what a lot of people call this kind of collage technique these days. I only used my watercolor supplies, so I guess it is still technically a watercolor painting. One reason is I know those are high quality and will not fade or change color over time.
I see a lot of people endorsing bad quality art supplies for mixed media projects on the internet. I’m not sure the artists realize this, but I remember it’s very disappointing to see your artwork change appearance over time. It takes a bit of research and testing to find the good quality supplies, but it’s worth it when you look at your colorful artwork and know it’ll be just as beautiful in the future as it is now.
As you can see I love colors, and you might ask: What is this rainbow spill nonsense? Well this is abstract art, so you can look at it any way you want.
Some artists would advise to limit the color palette to just a couple of colors when creating artwork. But there’s that word again: limit. That’s not how I roll.
This is my newest item, Apple Fabric Table Runner!
I use quite a lot of retro style fabrics & I love GREEN so this fabric is a definite favourite of mine. I also make co-ordinating placemats in sets of 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12. It’s certainly a gift for a woman & especially if she loves green or has a vintage decor theme in her home.
My most popular fabric is my ‘Retro Coffee’ & I sell so many placemats, table runners & sets.
Every Saturday, my husband and I have started a tradition of hunting for wonderful one of a kind finds. objects of beauty and charm from years gone past.Yesterday, as I was picking this sweet bowl was hiding in the back of a nest of other bowls. I love the warmth and the rustic farmhouse feeling that it gives. The thought of those cold winter mornings, to come to breakfast with a breath of sunshine.

I am fascinated by trends. Are you? There are weather trends, work place trends, business trends, job trends, food trends, real estate trends, hair trends, fashion trends color trends and so on.
The definition of a trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. In college I took several classes on trends. I remember distinctly studying pre peak – peak – post peak timelines. I find trends intriguing. They pique my curiosity.
Trends unite us. Give us a common ground. A connecting point.
During the #CIJParty 2015 I introduced you to the Summer 2015 Trends. Over the next few days I would like to share the CIJ team member trends in more detail!
I was so enthusiastic about the results, I bought a letter-press myself, and now I can do it myself. This is one of my first personalized items, but there are many to come!
I am experimenting with personalizing some of my items on Etsy.
I wrote about my experiences on my blog:
I have designed several personalized pieces with a vintage, antique, retro style appearance. The characters have an imperfect rubber stamp like appearance from the days of old which matches the sepia antique color of the font.
The custom lettering is ‘fused’ to the glass at a high temperature of over 1200 degrees.
I love to make custom things to support cancer awareness – I am a 4 year survivor of lung cancer – and I love to offer as many different charms/customized colors, and more! I try to keep costs down on anything related to these type of listings also, as it is my way of giving something back.
I just got started with personalizing and you will see added personalization available very soon – especially with anything cancer related, awareness in general, or inspirational.
A good luck charm pendant that has a birthstone option for personalization. Make a wish!
Big bear with big heart is so so cute! At least a lot of people say so! I hope it is true.
This bear was born in my drawing.
Firstly it was without heart and with no name on it, but I had another toy which was holding a heart in his hands, but still it had just a heart, but no name on it. One day a custom order came which said:
“I just love this bear, but I need a name on it, maybe it could be in a heart like another toy has?”
It was amazing Idea. I just loved final image of it.
I can personalize any item from my shop for you.
The owl pillows have the requested name on the tummy usually.
I can also embroider a name onto the quilt.
I wrote about how I create the owl pillows in my blog a little while ago. It’s not a full step by step blog, just some thoughts.
Here’s one sweet felt name banner I made for my little girl.
Whilst her diet is mainly veggies and fruits as these are what we eat at home, she is our lollipop in the house. She’s bubbly, cheery and she talks non stop – well, most of the time!
And of course she loves her ice cream!
This is a personalized baby bodysuit we made for the human brother of Labrador Lilly. When baby arrives, we don’t want dogs to be forgotten! People send us photos and we create graphic image of the dog. We print them on ethnically sourced garments and use eco-friendly inks.
“Lets Eat” Turkey has always been a big hit at craft fairs! I tend to get orders on him to personalize the writing in his belly with the family’s last name or another Thanksgiving saying. It’s a great centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table or a gift to bring the host/hostesses of your Thanksgiving dinner.
We specialize in personalized! With our inspired design listings customers can request any ideas they have in mind and even send us a picture of the photograph they want to frame. We create a custom design just for them.
A customer recently sent us a picture of her two boys dressed up like pirates and we created a pirate themed picture frame which we will be adding to our shop soon. Let us know if you need a personalized frame to display your picture perfect moments.
I created this bag tag as a thank you for my daughters 3rd birthday, and once I decided that I was going to create my first line of tags and cards to sell here, these were an obvious choice to include. I think having personalized tags on a party bag adds that extra personal touch, which people connect with.
This is the first personalized item from the personalized painting series, other items are coming soon. I love to make my customers happy and in the same time create something which is different, not the same like thousands of other copies, that’s why I love to also personalize my items, than I can imagine how would the new owner of the painting look like, it helps to also make the creation more intimate.
As a former teacher, I know they are ALWAYS prepping for school, so even though school’s out, our personalized Welcome signs might be of interest. This Welcome Kindergarten printable sign is designed to be very simple so everyone can read and recognize it, parents, teachers and our youngest learners alike!
Everything in my shop is pretty much personalized/customized, and I love it! This in particular is one of my favorites. When my babies were born, one of my favorite things to do was to make sure they had something specific to them and their story for their rooms. I’d like to share this concept with my baby themed alphabet. Anyone can personalize any alphabet to read whatever they would like, but the baby themed alphabet is fun to write out baby’s name and include their birth date and measurements. So sweet!
Santa Bearing Gifts was painted by Beth Stephens and is offered as a personalized art print. We can add 6 or more names on the blank gift tags. You can add your children, pets, parents, friends, etc. We also can fill in the bottom three gift tags with words too.
Each print is printed on archival linen paper and is matted with a white, acid-free mat. The matted print is protected with a white foam core backing and sealed with a clear wrap bag.

Happy Christmas In July to all, and to all a good night!

Any holiday is the best excuse to gather the family and show how much we care. Independence Day was always a big celebration in my mother’s family. Generations have served in the Army, Air Force, and Marines, and it was always important to our family that their service be honored through our celebrations. Our entire extended family would gather in a little town called Louviers, CO. A large BBQ and back yard games would ensue. What makes Holidays special for our CIJ families? Read on. Feel free to share your holiday memories in the comments section. If you see something you like, just click on the pictures to shop our Etsy CIJ team!
For us it will be the Chinese New Year (CNY).
It is a big thing in our family, very much like Christmas to many Western countries except that it usually falls on either end of January or beginning of February. Every year has a different date according to the Chinese calendar.
We’re from Indonesia, but my family root is Chinese and my parents are ‘big’ on Chinese New Year.
It is the time to gather together as a big family and enjoying the CNY dinner.
Food is usually in abundance around this time, especially sweet treats like Pineapple tarts. Sweet treats symbolise sweet beginning to a new year.
The CNY dinner menu usually includes fish, tofu, noodle. They symbolise good fortune and long life. We usually wear anything red and the children will usually get red pockets from their parents and grandparents.
This red dolly felt hairclip organiser in my shop is inspired by the CNY:
I have a Christmas birthday and my parents would always get me a Christmas ornament and put it on my cake with my candles. Sometimes it was cats (I went through a cat phase), other times it was space capsules and moon landers. It morphed into a car for my 16th, a ballet shoe for a big recital…..
I still get an ornament each year, something to symbolize an event that happened.
This inspired most of my ornaments, but definitely this set of “his and hers” first Christmas stockings. Miniature stockings are hand cut from a up cycled felted sweater and sweet vintage pearly, white buttons are seen on the edge.
My favorite holiday is the day of birth. On this day, it’s nice to get the gifts. The best gift for a girl is a doll.
One of my preferred holidays is Mother’s Day.
My sons really love me and usually show me their love in different ways, but It’s so sweet having a particular attention on that day!
This year they were both away but they called me on the phone and on skype too.
When they want to be particularly tender with me, they don’t call me “mom” but “mamy” and I’m…..touched!
I created this decor just thinking it as a perfect gift not only on Mother’s Day, but to show every day love and thankfulness to every mom in any moment of the year.
My favorite holiday is Christmas when family from far away come home to celebrate. Let’s face it, during the month of December we run around completing our energy. To replenish my energy after Christmas, what do I do? Go down to the beach to find sea glass. Although, finding sea glass is now hard to find at the Jersey shore, it’s not impossible. The best part during this “after Christmas” visit to the beach is to see all the Christmas trees along the beach. Bradley Beach, NJ uses the trees to recycle and build up the dunes. It’s so cool, to imagine all the memories these trees provided to families. It’s a cold little visit but so worth it. My energy is renewed and maybe a few pieces of sea glass in my pocket!
Within my family we celebrate Christmas the most – usually everyone has time off work so everyone can get together.
My store has lots of handmade ceramic tablewares which are ideal for making a celebration special – what better than to share food presented in a unique piece of tableware made with love.
The Christmas Tree Skirt is a big tradition in my family. I use the one my Grandmother made for me soon after I got married. I put it under our tree every year. My mother uses the one her mother made her soon after she married. My sisters also put out the tree skirts that were hand made for them by our Grandmother. It is a special time when I pull out that skirt and remember my Grandmother.
I thought it was a wonderful tradition to get started in any family. I hope that my customers are picking out a special handmade tree skirt from my shop and use it year after year.
Here is a sample of my home made felt tree skirts.
Mother’s Day is near and dear to my heart. Of course, because I’m a mother and I can feel the love my daughters have for me. And to me it’s a day to celebrate being a mother myself and what a great gift my children are. And lately though it’s bitter sweet since I am often so far away from my own mother that I can’t visit her on this day. And with her declining health and advancing age, I count each new Mother’s Day she celebrates as a gift. I was able to see her a year ago and captured her prize-winning roses in photo. I’ve turned some of them into greeting cards and overtime I look at them and relive so many sunny Mother’s Days I spend with my own mom.
In our family while I was growing up almost any holiday turned into a big deal with large family get togethers and tons of great foods, fun, games and laughter. Our family is much smaller now, but the part that always means something to me no matter what is just – family. That bond that is there regardless of the holiday you are celebrating. I was so afriad I would not be here to celebrate more holidays with family when I was diagnosed with lung cancer at 44 years old. I lost my father to this disease, – it has been many years, but I thought much on the fact that those holidays, birthdays, Easter or any holiday – many families do not have very much laughter or are feeling lost, hopeless, lonely, or grieving. I wanted to provide a message of hope, and messages of inspiration – as a survivor I feel a need to pass that on. I also know that sometimes just having something to remember and honor those who lost this fight can be a special thing, and a healing thing. So I make things and hope that they bring a bit of happiness and hope – and healing. I want awareness to spread.
A parting thought…
We’re thinking of you this special holiday,
Sending our wishes for joy and happiness,
Hoping all good things will come your way:
Satisfaction, comfort, peace, success!
