Shop Best-Sellers

A best-seller can be defined as a product that is extremely popular and has sold in very large numbers.

One of the most important requirements of a product is that it must fulfill a need or want.  The product should make life easier, better or fulfill a dream.  Another aspect to consider is the market for the product.  Are you targeting a mass- market or a niche market?  Sometimes targeting a mass-market can be beneficial if you want your product featured on television and want everyone to be your potential customers.  It is easier to sell your products to a niche market because there is often less competition, plus you are able to focus your marketing and advertising on a pre-determined demographic group.

The products that we sell in our Etsy shops are a huge factor in whether or not we succeed.  Creating the right product will greatly increase our profits.  I asked members of Etsy’s Christmas In July Team to share the best-selling product from their shop and to explain why it appeals to their target market.

My best selling item for awhile now has been the (usually color enhanced) pendant beads I sell as a supply. I have hardly been able to keep up lately. I think people find the different types, colors, shapes and also decent pricing to be a reason to come back.

I would like to say that the focus of my shop is supposed to be for cancer awareness and I have had a hard time keeping enough stock lately. I hope to be able to grow this side of our store this spring and summer to offer more, so that I can donate a percentage of sales, which is my goal. As a cancer survivor who could not ever find the colors I wanted I would love to offer more support, positive messages, faith and inspirational things that are also affordable.

My printable calendars have sold more than any other item, in particular the portrait orientation chevron calendar.  I started making my own printable calendars a few years ago, but I didn’t start selling them here until 2013. I was surprised how many I sold, but it seems a lot of people love to print at home. I love paper crafting of any sort, so for me it’s fun to make and print them myself.

I guess my one of my best sellers is the fimo fruit rosary. I have custom made some too with fruits of their choice. I love customising!
They have been given for christening gifts to be used as a wall decoration. I don’t think they are suitable for small children though. The fimo is too tempting to chew.

My all time best seller is my personalised heart print. It’s perfect as a housewarming, wedding, civil union, commitment ceremony or engagement party gift. It’s a print that can be personalised however you like, over the years I’ve added children’s names, wedding/important dates and commitment ceremony vows along the bottom of the print. I truly believe this print is my best seller simply because I live by the words love is love.

With vintage you don’t have any one particular item that sells but you can get people buying the same type of item every time you list something like it. In my case, I have sold many refrigerator dishes. First produced in 1925, they came in bright primary colors, clear glass and colored glass. People like them today because they last, if you don’t drop them of course. I have also had people tell me they don’t like to store food in plastic and that the refrigerator dish is safer storage option and good for the environment.

Tell us about yourself.     

I am a librarian and worked in public libraries for 38 years before retiring in May of 2014. I received my Masters Degree in Library Science but always loved yard sales, flea markets and antique stores. I have two grown children and my husband is a retired teacher. I live in a suburban town of 70,000 in south Jersey. I have lived here my entire life.

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

I actually started selling books online in 2003 and started selling on Etsy in March 2013. I had managed to accumulate wonderful vintage items and thought I was going to wait until I retired to sell on Etsy but I couldn’t wait any longer…my small storage area in my house was bursting at the seams. You see my husband also likes antiques and collectibles so I had his things too.GRCTreasures1

Tell us a bit about your products.

Most of my items are vintage kitchen ware , china, home decor items and sewing patterns. Something about beautiful china just really attracts me. And as most vintage sellers know….sell what you love. Sometimes it is hard to part with my vintage items and truth be told, I have kept a few things for myself.

What inspires your work? 

I am inspired by other Etsy sellers and their beautiful vintage items. The whole Etsy community is very inspirational, there are so many wonderful craft and vintage shops.GRCTreasures2

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business? 

This year I have set some goals for myself. Scout out inventory at least one day a week, be it at thrift stores or estate sales. Spruce up my photographs and learn to make better use of my 35 mm camera for better pictures. Be more consistent about posting on social media. Try to set up a blog with articles on vintage items.

My dream – being retired I am living my dream to sell online, be my own boss and set my own hours. I just want to give my customers a great Etsy experience.

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

I think great customer service helps me stand out, being willing to work with the customer. Try to make sure their items get to their destination safely and as quickly as possible. Sell great items in good condition and abide by Etsy’s definition of vintage…research and find out as much as you can about your item.GRCTreasures3

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

I have an office dedicated to my business. It has my computer, packing station, and storage shelves for supplies.

I have my guest room set up for picture-taking and can easily remove it when guests are staying with me.

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

Package very carefully, air pillows are the best! Read the seller help…lots of information there.

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Learn as much as you can about Etsy, set up your shop but make sure you read the seller handbook. Join a few teams that will help you promote and gain knowledge. Have a well designed Etsy shop banner and avatar, something that distinguishes you from other shops.GRCTreasures5

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I like to read and belong to a book club. In the summer I love going to our pool or heading to the  beach. One of my favorite things is walking on the sand and looking for shells and beach glass. And I must confess…playing Candy Crush relaxes me.
