Christmas In July Leader – Sherri from ButterflyFeetDigital

ButterflyFeetDigital

1. What is the name of your shop and where do you look for inspiration?

My shop name is Butterfly Feet Digital. I enjoy paper crafting – card making, scrap booking, etc. – so I enjoy looking through paper crafting magazines and books. But I can find inspiration in unexpected places – for example, I love fabric and I have done a fair amount of sewing over the years – but often when I see a fabric that I love I think, “That would make a great background paper for a greeting card.”

2. How has your shop evolved over time?

Because I love working with paper, learning to create my own papers to use in that hobby was the beginning – my first calendars were solely for my own refrigerator, and greeting cards got mailed out to my own family and friends. I started out making all my items in PDF format. I have learned a lot over the years about digital design in general, and now I usually make items in JPG format, and sometimes PNG if a transparent background is needed.

3. What do you love most about your work?

I enjoy creating computer art, and I love trying out different color combinations. I am self-taught, so there is a lot of trial and error, but it’s so fun to try out a new technique and to see what can be done with all the digital brushes and tools.

4. What motivating music do you listen to? Share your playlist that gets and keeps you going!

I actually usually don’t put on music if I am just at the computer – I am pretty focused on what I’m doing and just don’t think about it. Some days especially when I am doing housework like today, I have on a Christian music station which I love, very soothing.

5. What book are you reading right now and where is your favorite place to read?

I really should read more than I do – I used to read all the time! Right now I am not reading one – however, I am working on writing a novella – again, I’m at my computer!

6. What are your social media sites?

Currently, none. I do have a sadly neglected blog – but it’s not about my Etsy shop.

I have begun to focus more on bold, exotic items, whether they be unusual/rare gemstone beads, African trade beads, ancient Roman Glass, or striking, out-of-the-ordinary jewelry designs.

3. What do you love most about your work?

Writing my weekly blog in celebration of the things I love — beautiful gemstones and other natural materials for jewelry making, amazing Etsy artisans, stories from the bead and gemstone industry, and more.

5. What book are you reading right now and where is your favorite place to read?

Usually read in bed — must have old fashioned paperback copy I can snuggle up with comfortably so I can focus on only that and be drawn into the book’s world. Right now I’m reading The Museum of Extraordinary Things.

Christmas In July Leader – SpoiledFelinesArt from SpoiledFelinesArt

SpoiledFelinesArt

1. What is the name of your shop and where do you look for inspiration?

The name of my shop is SpoiledFelinesArt.

I’ve always been in awe of nature … it’s simplicity and beauty inspires me as an artist and as a human being … I believe that’s what drew me to the woodworking arts.

2. How has your shop evolved over time?

I opened my shop with some hand burned animal plaques and wood carved birds and ducks. Then I started getting lots of requests for wooden trinket boxes with hand burned special messages … So I do the custom order hand burned trinket boxes, and also carry some “in stock” trinket boxes that have already been hand burned with “meaningful sayings” onto them and are “ready to ship”.

3. What do you love most about your work?

I think what I love most about my work is creating a custom order for someone … I truly feel honored when a customer has chosen me to create a special gift for them!

4. What motivating music do you listen to? Share your playlist that gets and keeps you going!

I love hard rock music … but I must admit that I don’t listen to music or the TV when I’m working on an item. When I work, I like to focus on what I’m doing, so I work in silence.

5. What book are you reading right now and where is your favorite place to read?

I love to read, so I read wherever I happen to be … my faves are sci-fi books … the last book I read was “I Wore Heels to the Apocalypse” by C H Clepitt … great book … I highly recommend it!

Christmas In July Leader – Dawn from DeeDeeDeesigns

DeeDeeDeesigns

1. What is the name of your shop and where do you look for inspiration?

My shop is DeeDeeDeesigns. I create handmade ceramic home decor and jewellery, and also jewellery made using recycled items such as guitar strings, fabric, marbles and plastics.

My inspiration is largely drawn from the environment – reflected in the glazes and forms of my ceramics – and seen in the ideology of using recycled items in my jewellery practice.

2. How has your shop evolved over time?

When my shop initially opened I only old ceramic home wares. Due to an accident in 2011 where I severed a finger I began making jewellery. I could not make the larger products I was used to making on the potters wheel, so jewellery was a great way to keep creating, and at the same time opened a new world of creativity within my art practice.

3. What do you love most about your work?

I love that I can work from home and keep my own hours. I am a night owl, so being a full time self employed artist suits me down to the round.

4. What motivating music do you listen to? Share your playlist that gets and keeps you going!

Well, in my studio I can only receive one radio station, and that is the ABC which also incorporates the BBC – so I am a wealth of information!! But I do love listening to news and current affairs so it doesn’t bother me!

5. What book are you reading right now and where is your favorite place to read?

Currently I am reading Thomas Harding ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ Where I like to read depends on the season. At the moment in Australia it is Winter so I love reading in bed with my electric blanket on (when I have the time)!
