Gypsy, Boho, Bohemian, Ethnic, Hippie — whatever you choose to call it, it’s FUN! In modern usage, the term “Bohemian” is applied to people who live unconventional, usually artistic, lives. The original “Bohemians” were travelers or refugees from central Europe (hence, the French bohemian, for “gypsy”).
At the beginning of the Bohemian ‘movement’, it was said that gypsy girls themselves “…are sexy and delightful precisely because they do not give a hoot for fashion.”
When the style was first identified, it was the early 20th century. Fast forward to the 60’s and 70’s when major designers started to routinely promote the “peasant look” and sold a range of “uniquely eccentric clothes.” (How many of you still have some of those in the back of your closet, like me??)
Fast forward again to the late 1980’s, when variants of the short and fundamentally un-Bohemian rah-rah skirt (which originated with cheerleaders) were combined with leather or denim to create a look with some Bohemian or even gothic features. New names emerged, like ‘hippie chic’ and ‘boho-chic’. Similar styles were sometimes referred to as “bobo” or “ashcan chic” or “luxe grunge” — with leading proponents including actresses Mary Kate Olsen and Zooey Deschanel.
Whatever it’s called, and whatever the iteration or era, we L.O.V.E. it. What do you have or love that’s Boho? We asked our team members to share their stories and items with us, and here’s what we got —
Some people think that these little bags are Bohemian style bags and I share them with the teenagers as cute chic bags to carry for fun. Cool colorful stripes and colorful flower button makes it a fun bag for any teen! What is fun about this style of bag is it can be made into the school’s colors too, that is pretty chic too!
While Bohemian fashion may cycle through fashion popularity over the years, true Bohemians don’t care about popularity or style – they care about expressing themselves. So wear what makes you feel good!
Boho or hippie brings to mind closeness to nature and the earth.
The earth toned beads accentuate that feeling. Add to that the brown cord and the large brown beach glass, it’s a statement piece that screams I love nature.
I think of unique, eclectic designs and earthy colors when I think Boho home design. These repurposed wind chimes combine old and new with a unique free flowing style and earth tone colors.
We found these vintage napkin rings in Ann Arbor, Michigan!
We love their puffy hats and long eyelashes!
Who needs napkins?! These girls are perfect on their own!
Boho style is the best! This pillow has a lovely boho vibe and is a perfect accent for your gypsy style chair, bed, or room. Bright color and lovely hamsa symbol make it a unique decorative piece!
Our friends sure proved they know boho! Until next time,
There are so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors! We asked our Teamies what they love to do outside, and what their shops offer so others can do the same. Here’s what they told us:
Nature is such a great source of inspiration for me. The starry night sky, the greenery of the forest and the salt of the sea all snap my creativity into production. I really love my visits to the sea. My kids can be as loud as they want with the ocean waves crashing around them. They can run and get dirty, bury themselves in the sand and then wash it all off in the water. They remind me that I once did that too and coax me out into the wild. We all feel the forces of nature that are greater than us, wind on our faces and salt on our tongues and powerful waves stinging our skin. There is no better place to make me feel so grateful to be alive. This inspirational quote is a reminder of that. And yes, those are my kids and their cousins, doing what kids do best, making their mark on the sandy beaches of the Oregon Coast.
We spent many vacations with our kids and dog at Southwick Beach on Lake Ontario. We stayed in Our Red Coleman Tent. When my Premie Daughter was born and the hospital told us to take a break for a weekend we stayed on an electric camp site so I could Pump my Milk to keep it going for my return. She is now 30 and in excellent health.
Well we used Sleeping Bags. I am selling a new but vintage Marlboro Sleeping Bag that my sister gave ma as a Gift. She was an Avid Smoker and collected Marlboro gifts.
This cheery sunhat with daisy trim reminds me of summer days at the beach.
My son and husband built a pond in our backyard 12 years ago.
I can see it out my kitchen window and enjoy watching how it changes through the seasons.
We have fish and “resident” frogs that are fun to watch.
The frogs are highly intelligent and are famous for posing in silly positions for my camera!
These miniature frogs remind me of the characters by our pond:
It’s time to get grilling! @DesignstheLimit we have a propane grill and charcoal smoker which we use year round, but now that the weather is getting warmer it is time to get outside and start grilling!
We have a number of different personalized barbecue sets in our shop featuring canvas or wood storage cases and offer personalization in a wide variety of fonts and styles. Make every gift giving opportunity into a gift giving experience and give a gift that can be useful and appreciated @DesignstheLimit.
I love nature, period. Whether it’s working in my garden, watching birds at the lake or hiking in the wilderness — I enjoy it and couldn’t live without it. And then in the evening we sit around the campfire (yes, I do love to camp and sleep in a tent) and write into my journal. This is when inspiration hits and I can write about nature, my thoughts, my feelings and adventures in a beautiful handmade journal.
I’m not a skier but love the outdoors and belong to a hiking group. We hike in the New Mexico desert every week.
Once Spring and Summer arrive I love to wander around my garden and enjoy all the flowers and insect life that suddenly emerge.
These charms, once made in jewellery, keychains or craft projects, can remind us of the garden during the Winter months.
We love to visit Florida and go down to the keys. It is always a peaceful, relaxing time. The ocean around us never fails to amaze us and provide us with spiritual and mindfulness times. To sit and watch the waves, hear its wonderful sounds and know that there is such beauty in the world is all I need.
The Great Outdoors calls for a pair of warm Men’s Wool Socks that fit in the boots for hiking, working outdoors or sitting in that deer stand waiting for that first deer to stroll by. If the sock should get damp it would still keep the foot warm and dry. What a wonderful way to be outside and yet still be warm! Women’s sizes are available too!

I am looking forward to spring flowers and getting outside to plant my garden. These blue flower earrings are great for this March weather…Blue like ice but with the promise of blooms to come.
Spring is a beautiful time to be outdoors and nothing is more fun with children than an old-fashioned Easter egg hunt. My little child-size tote is perfect for collecting those sweet Easter candies!
Gardening! In Texas wildflower season is here along the roadsides and prairies the wildflowers emerge with colorful heads to say hello to Texans! I love to share our colors with you! Color your garden this spring with some Texas native wildflowers!
The piece has earth toned beads to go with the amber brown beach glass. It is a boho like piece to call out your inner hippie.
Camping season is in full swing and what’s camping without a campfire?! This fire tool makes fire starting easy and fun! It works great for the fire pit, indoor fire place or your weber BBQ too! A unique gift idea for Father’s Day, Graduation, Birthdays, Christmas, etc.
These beads are ideal for jewellery design, quilting, scrapbooking – name your craft project!
When I first came upon these beads I was so enthusiastic with the bubbles as they were crystal clear and projected an iridescent color in them. The shells captured that color. The name “Under the Sea” seemed appropriate for this necklace.
Clear crystal drops necklace with silver beads and chain. Quartz is a stone of pure energy, and will lift your spirits just being around it. Another plus is you can wear this with anything!
At Design’s the Limit, we offer both Crystal& Glass for Wine & Spirits including sand-carved personalization for the best combination of quality in both product and service. We also offer the option of having the bottom of any product sand-frosted. Whether you are shopping for a centerpiece, ceremony set, or entertaining a large number of guests. Impress your guests in style @DesignstheLimit
We offer the Salmanazar 396 ounce Wine Decanter with Stopper shown above and the Double Magnum 128 ounce size as well. We also have a Giant 336 ounce Wine Glass in stock for special requests! Gift wrap and gift cards available for shipping direct to your recipient. We take personal to the next level, go BIG and make your next gift opportunity a gift giving experience to be remembered!
When I first discovered the joys of vintage buying and selling I was shy about stocking glass items … party because I knew very little about identifying quality, but I also had a deep fear of getting the packaging wrong and ending up with breakages! My learning curve included watching the TV show Bargain Hunters, and that is where I first heard about Orrefors crystal. This paneled art glass bowl was my first personal encounter with the ‘real thing’. Stunned by the both the design and the clarity, I overcame my anxiety and brought it into my shop. I now stock quite a few glass pieces but this one is still my all time favorite.
Many thanks to all who shared these great items with us!

For me Boho means free-spirited. I consider myself one and am proud to raise my daughter who is 12 years old as a free-spirited young soul. We both love to dress up in bright colors.
We had lots of fun with this one, and we appreciate everyone who contributed!

Jewelry and Women are just two of many categories you can search on Etsy to find that perfect item you cannot live without! Christmas in July team has outdone themselves with these spectacular and shiny finds! Whether your taste is vintage, boho, avant garde or classic…take a trip with me.
I am sure most of us have that one item that just makes our jaws drop to the floor in awe and wonder. It must be mine!
Rachel Palmer of 910woolgathering says:
This one of a kind shawl was made from hand dyed wool. I dyed it using natural golden rod flowers for the yellow. I then hand spun it into yarn and wove it on a triangle loom.
Shannon of SimplyTwitterpated let me know:
I make ecofriendly jewelry from fallen trees or recycled lumber. A fallen cedar branch in my yard got a new life when I created these wood slice stud earrings. They include the live edge, giving them a very natural look!

This is the reason I opened a shop on Etsy in the 1st place. I was low on money one Christmas so I made a pair for everyone in my family and they were a big hit. They are my best seller!!
msmadmax of madmaxshop explained:
Throughout the decades, New York City has been a melting pot of exceptional style and unique outfits. As a result, it has become one of the ultimate resources for the finest in vintage fashion and accessories. This enchanting button front lace teddy by FORMFIT was an original 5th Avenue showroom sample.
Nancy of jaysboutiquecrochet told me:
Basically half of my shop is targeted towards women (and the other half towards babies, so check out my “Women’s Slippers” section to see them all. Also, some gift sets for new moms that includes Mother/Daughter crochet slippers. Wonderful stocking stuffers or gifts for any time of the year!
Nicki of OodlesofBling says:
My shop is dedicated to women… probably 98% of my listings are for women. In the Victorian era, women made jewelry for themselves from shells and paper. There are some very intricate designs still around today.
Amanda Sagarin of eclecticnesting stated:
It’s very hard to sell handmade jewelry here on Etsy because of all the wonderful selections folks have to choose from. I have a passion for making handmade earrings (I have many pairs I’ve made for myself and it brightens my day to wear them!) and would be so grateful and thrilled if a pair spoke to someone as a treat for themselves or a present….
Kelly of ColourscapeStudios shows me:
What women are made of!
Laura of PLANETDIGS2 shows me:
My fav boho, hippie vibe bracelet brings back memories of always being a gypsy for Halloween! I’ve don’e other similar bracelets. There must be many ‘gypsy at heart’ people like me.
Veddma of veddma tells me:
My love and I traveled across Ireland for our honeymoon. Embedded in a castle wall, at the Bunratty Castle, we discovered a black figure of a woman, opening herself up to the universe. We have learned that this figure is a Celtic fertility symbol, Sheela-na-gig, and her images are often found in the castles all over Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.
Just over a year later, I got pregnant with my first baby. I looked for images of Sheela-na-gig to make myself an amulet. She was the representation of female power, openness, fertility, freedom, and bounty of the universe to me. I drew her and made collages for my birth, and then I have found a lovely pewter charm design. This is how my Sheela-na-gig necklaces were born. Her image filled me with strength and helped me focus to bring my baby into being.
The necklace below is bright green, inspired by the green fields of Ireland that brought this wonderful symbol into my life.
Amy Spock of BeadsandThreadsbyAmy says:
As a plus size woman, I know how difficult it is for us to find larger bracelets that are fashionable and timeless. So, I set about creating this cuff. It fits a larger wrist beautifully, and looks great with blue jeans or evening gowns!
Betty Travell of Lady Snooks explains:
An Ammonite is a creature that lived in the seas between 240 – 65 million years ago and are now extinct. Fossils have always fascinated me, but this one was unusual. I had never seen an ammonite where the bottom portion is a deep red like this. The rest of the fossil is the usual shades of brown and rust.
I wanted to make it special, so I added some very small tourmaline beads along the one edge. I feel this makes it stand out.
Candy frizzell of TrueEarthDesigns states:
I love working with gemstones. I started around 8 years ago making jewelry. I now search for unique, patterns, character stones for my pieces. Like today, I received my order of gemstones and started putting colors and designs together. Beautiful Tigers Eye has so much movement (chatoyancy). All I can say is fun. Here are some of my newest design sets.
I hope you enjoyed this stroll and found something you must have, whether it be for you or someone else!
