Small Business Spotlight – Kelly From ColourscapeStudios

ColourscapeStudios

ColourscapeStudios

 1. What made you start your small business?

I started my business because I didn’t find anything within the Australian marketplace creating what I wanted for my daughter’s nursery, and so my print’s business was born back in 2012. I moved into stationery in 2015 and haven’t looked back.

2.  What do you feel is your greatest obstacle facing your small business?

The biggest obstacle facing my business is the speed of growth I’ve had over the last year. It’s really taken off and I’m still finding my feet!

3. What is the greatest strength you personally bring to your small business?

My tenacity! I’m a stubborn, headstrong woman and once I start something I don’t give it up without a fight. I think part of that is making sure I deliver the absolute best product I can to my customers as well, if they’re happy then so am I!

4. What is your small business strategy? How have you set up your business in terms of goals, marketing, business planning, etc?

My strategy is to stay sustainable. I enjoy being a one woman show and so finding the balance in how much work I take on is key. I have several to-do lists running at any given time, covering all the basics like admin work, marketing and social media, and I sit down every 6 months to revise my business plan.

5. What social media sites do you interact on?

You’ll find me way too often on Instagram @colourscapestudios but I’m also on Facebook www.facebook.com/ColourscapeStudios/ and Pinterest au.pinterest.com/KelColourscape/

DesignedbyAnneliese

1. What is name of your shop and what is unique about your shop?

My shop is called DesignedbyAnneliese. I love to make things using paper including cards, gift tags, embellishments and paper punches. I also love to try new crafts and I have a couple of jewellery items in the mix! My shop is a bit of a mix of all sorts of paper things.

2. Where do you live and how does where you live influence your creativity?

I live in Sydney, Australia in a townhouse with my husband and 2 gorgeous sons. My family is where I get my inspiration from for my creations. We live very close to a lovely park which is great for walking by the river.

3. What is your greatest business achievement?

I have only been open for roughly 4 months. In that time I have had a few custom orders which I love doing. Each time I have an order come through, I am so happy there is someone who likes my things!!

4. How would you like to see your business evolve?

I would love to continue doing custom orders for people. I would like to keep trying new and different crafts and seeing where it leads me!

DeeDeeDeesigns

1. What is the name of your shop and what is unique about your shop?

My shop name is DeeDeeDeesigns. My shop is unique because everything I create is handmade and one of a kind – so you are guaranteed a unique piece of wearable art or home art.

2. Where do you live and how does where you live influence your creativity?

I live in a semi rural area of central Victoria, Australia. This environment influences the colours and textures of my creations.

3. What is it about having your own business that you love?

I am a night person so don’t do the 9-5 very well, so having my own small business, especially one I can run from home, suits my bodies natural rhythms.

4. What is your greatest business achievement?

Writing a book about ceramics and having it published.

5. How would you like to see your business evolve?

I would like to continue growing my business and achieve more regular sales through my Etsy shop.

#CIJRoadTrip – Australia: Brisbane, Queensland

Contributor post by Alicia of AliciasFindings

Let’s travel to Australia – Brisbane, Queensland with Kelly from ColourscapeStudios

1. What city do you live in? What makes it special?

I live just north of Brisbane, Queensland in Australia. We’re known as the sunshine state here, gorgeous weather pretty much all year ’round! Last week I was able to take the family out for ice cream at the beach in winter!

2. What are several places everyone visiting your country should see?

One for each state here:
Queensland; The Whitsundays, especially Whitehaven Beach.. the most pure and beautiful beach I have ever seen in my life.
New South Wales: Head to The Blue Mountains, amazing and breathtaking.
Australian Capital Territory: Time your visit in September and head to Floriade, the flower show.
Victoria: Drive the Great Ocean Road… it really is spectacular!
South Australia: Find some hidden gems in Barossa Valley, home to some of the best wines in the country!
Tasmania: A must see, Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair. Mind blowing!
Western Australia: Head North and explore the Outback in the Bungle Bungle’s, or Karijini National Park.
Northern Territory: Uluru (previously known as Ayers Rock). A giant rock in the middle of nowhere. A sacred site to the Indigenous people of this land.

3.  How have the customs, traditions, geography, nature etc. inspired the items you create?

Nature and the countries geography has always played a big part in my shop. My photography reflects this, nothing better than getting out and exploring our slice of the world. It’s a great place to be inspired for my typography range as well. You can’t be angry when you’re looking across a mountain range, or watching a river run to the sea.

4. What are you doing this fall to drive your business in your community? Are you doing a festival or show? How do you reach out to your community?

Well it’s Spring for us soon, and it’s the start of the Christmas shopping season! I attend one of our local markets, Handmade Redcliffe every month and will be doing so until the end of the year. I’m a massive supporter of the “shop small, shop local” movement and try not to buy from large multinationals as much as I can.
