Tell us about yourself.

My Mom taught me to sew when I was about 9 years old and since then I have been making Needles Fly! Love sewing, crafting, playing with color, putting it all together in a unique useful and beautiful product.

When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?

Opened my Etsy shop May 2014. After retiring from the corporate world, I wanted an outlet for the items I lovingly created to share with Moms & Grandmas to give their families smiles, giggles and to make treasured memories together.

Tell us a bit about your products.

I design and create fine hand made articles combining a little bit of vintage, good old fashioned values, with a modern flair and a flash of color. Everything is washable, affordable and fine quality. My offerings have transitioned from kid’s clothes and purses to Aprons for all sizes and ages and Baby Accessories (small quilts and Montessori balls). I enjoy recycling, repurposing and upcycling. Many of my materials are sourced from estates sales, so I have recently added Vintage Decor and Sewing Supplies to my shop.

What inspires your work

Various designs inspire me – Victorian, Amish, Pop Culture, Modernism, Art Deco, Nature. I find inspiration everywhere I look! Many times I buy fabrics or materials with a design in mind but it turns into something else! Some of the baby quilts in my shop now were made from materials planned for dresses or other projects.

What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?

My goals are to continue to provide items that are fun, adorable and easy to care for that make people feel good and create memories using them. Cooking together in matching aprons, or playing with their babies. My dream is to continue to donate items and profits to charities that have the same results: good fun memories!

What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?

To stand out from other businesses I offer Beautiful Affordable Unique Quality items. My quick response and shipping to customers is appreciated. I strive to add that extra touch – a personal note, a free surprise – to exceed customer’s expectations.

Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?

My studio is a spare bedroom with two large tables (estate sale finds) for designing and cutting. My Grandma’s quilt, ragged and torn after 60 years of use, hangs on the wall and is the backdrop for most of my product photos. It inspires me to make useful beautiful things that will last. The nice big closet is great for clean, orderly storage!

What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?

I have learned A LOT since opening my business: SEO, copy writing, Etsy, Facebook for business, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram. Probably I wouldn’t have learned about these things without having an on line business. There’s always more to learn and I love that about this life!

Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?

Etsy is a supportive community and great place to start your on line business! Give it a go!

When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?

Creating, sewing, photography have been my hobbies forever and I use them in my business. I hardly ever think about this as work. Work was what I did before I retired! Love spoiling my 13 year old Lab mix, Duke. My Husband and I love to travel by motorcycle, car, any way, to experience our wonderful country! I also volunteer a lot with kids at our local school and church.

What is your favorite quote?

Jeremiah 24:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

In being an entrepreneur, be prepared to invest your heart and mind and an infinite amount of time. Be patient with yourself and keep focused on your ultimate goals. Find joy in the small things!
