Tell us about yourself.
My name is Boyan and I live in Bulgaria – beautiful country in Europe. I am an ironmonger who has lived for over 15 years with a plastic artist It seems that art is contagious because after spending so many years helping my wife with the metal and wood elements, which she likes to use in her work, a good day in May 2015, I came up with Make my wife a metal flower. It was a forged copper tulip. She loved it so much, that I then made others – all metal – copper, iron, tin iron … Commit to making other objects – lamps, wall clocks, metal sculptures, wood and stone. I decided to share with you the things I do. I would be very happy if you like them!
When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?
One day in May 2015 I made wrought copper tulip for my wife. She liked it so much, that the single tulip became a series of wrought metal flowers. Some from iron, others of copper, some tinned, others patina-ed or cut-through for a lacelike effect. Than I started playing with shapes, different methods of welding and blacksmith techniques, cutting and patinating chemicals, varnishing. After the first several tulips I made some poppies. At the end of the summer of the same year we made the shop in ETSY, I also work with various art galleries in Bulgaria. As time passed I realized that one has more fun, doing different things – producing only tulips and poppies was not enough.
Tell us a bit about your products.
Now I dedicate myself to inventing things – steel things sculptures, lamps, wall clocks … I started adding other materials – especially – stone and wood. I like experimenting with different technologies. Many times I start making objects that seem impossible – like a bouquet of lilac, a violin and an iron shoe and some others I like to put a touch of absurd an my works. Of course – when it is not an object of use…Although sometimes it may appear in them too In some cases my wife participates in the production of the finished product, in others – she takes part in the invention of the works. We even have mutual works. For example – she made figurines that are part of a airplane-toy and two wall clocks.
What inspires your work?
Inspiration is everywhere! The material – a piece of junk can get you an idea in your head I like to walk and looking at things around, I like to “steal” ideas from all sides – always passing them from my mind and transforming them. Clearly – it inspires me the work of my wife, since we have been working together for many years and I am the one that deals with the elements of metal and wood Naturally – the most natural inspiration – the NATURE! – the flowers! At first I did not think to invent anything – I only had an idea of copying nature.
What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?
I do not like planning or dreaming too much – I get up early in the morning and start working. But – that’s clear – it can not be without any planning We have 2 exhibitions planned in Bulgaria – in April and October. For me this work is not really just business – of course, when the works are sold better, that makes me more stable, more calm and I can dedicate myself to create better All the friends who make their business in Etsy thought that art can not be easily sold there. That is why I try to maintain a position between art and artezania. Objects can never be repeated again, some are never repeated, but most can be made to look quite alike. I would like to get at least 100 items in the store and keep them more or less with this number. I would also like to sell and produce with such speed .. And, of course – I would like more people to know my work!
What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?
Especially – I try to do things different from the others. I put a lot of effort in inventing clocks and lamps that nobody has done the same. I do the flowers in a way that the others do not. This is not easy because I have seen tremendous metalworkers in ETSY! I try that everything is done strongly and in the best way. I do not look at the common taste – I agree that I will have fewer clients, but they will be people who share my ideas. It is very important that objects are presented well – photographs must be real and beautiful at the same time. In addition – they must give ideas of how can locate the objects. For example – extraordinary metal lamps do not look equally good in every home. But in many homes there are corners, where they can locate and fill the space with artistic atmosphere. I try to give ideas for that with the photos.
Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?
I live in the attic of a 1930’s house – in the center of the city. I use the bottom half for my workshop, In the not too cold seasons, I also work in the yard or in my wife’s workshop, which is in the same plot. I think I’m very lucky in that – work and live in the same place, without wasting time in traveling! I feel very happy to have an independent space to work.
What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?
HAHAHAHAHA! I would like to know the English language better.
Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?
Each one should know that selling in an electronic store is easier and cheaper for the owner, but it requires a lot of time resources, a lot of learning, SEO knowledge, one must spend many hours learning things that have not occurred to him and must also spend many hours developing your store – just like in a real store. It is better that there is at least one other person to divide the weight Because if not – one will not have any time to do their general work. I really did not think it could be so hard but right now I do not regret it at all!
When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?
My job is my hobby But yes – I like to travel, ski, read and see what makes the rest of the world artisan and artistic.
What is your favorite quote?
Do what you have to do and what happens!
Where can people find out more about your business?
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Yes! Happiness, good health and good luck to everyone! … and…the works of my wife.
