Tell us about yourselves.
We are a married couple with 3 amazing boys.
We do this work on top of our day job and our family responsibilities.
We are lucky to be able to work together so well, that is not something that married couples can often do.
When did you open your business and what make you decide to do so?
We started this business with the quest for Whiskey Stones, Made in Canada and were amazed to see a huge hole in the market. So my husband with his trusty saw decided to fill that void.
So with the support of his wife (me) and our three little men, he started creating stones. With his mechanical savvy and my artsyness we designed and branded Polar Stones ~ Whiskey on the Rocks.
We are proud of what we have started together, and happy with the amazing feedback we have received and our repeat customers have proven that our products are valued in Canada, the US and around the world.
Tell us a bit about your products.
We started out with just simple whiskey stones cut from soapstone and it has just snowballed from there, with we can make that, oh I like that, lets’ make this. We just love coming up with new ideas.
What inspires your work?
To be honest it really is just what we are into at the time, we really base things on what we would like. If it is not something we would like or use, why would we expect anyone else to.
What are your future goals for the business this year? What is your dream for this business?
We have been happy with what we have accomplished this far. We would love to expand more into corporate gifting, we have a few corporate orders every year and would like to see that pick-up.
What makes your business stand out from businesses that sell similar products?
We just go that extra mile. If it is something that will work we will try our best to get it too.
I don’t know if anyone else there works custom whiskey block like we do.
Tell us a bit about your work space. Do you have a separate studio?
Our studio is in our basement and at busy time stretches out to the rest of our house.
I swear at Christmas time (which is our busiest time) we are messier than our children.
What have you learned since opening your business that you wish you had known before hand?
I have enjoyed the learning curve.
I wish I had known some of the things that just make life easier in the beginning. Like a dymo label printer, that thing is a lifesaver and save so much time with shipping.
Any advice for those thinking about selling on Etsy?
Give it a shot, you never know what could happen.
Put yourself out there, you just may have a great idea.
We started with thinking “wow it would be great if we could sell just one or two” over 2500 orders later, we are still enjoying the ride.
When you’re not working, what do you like to do to unwind and have fun? Do you have any hobbies?
We just do regular family stuff, enjoy time out with friends (with our phones on).
We never truly stop working unless we are on vacation. We love to explore the world with our crazy little brood. We try to do a big one every few years.
What is your favorite quote?
Do or do not, there is not try.
Yes we are big nerds here.
